it was an easy thing to do with the ps2 since it sold so much, but with the lack of sales in the ps3 what would be the reason to keep it running for 10 years? polishkid99
Its lifetime sales are actually pretty comparable at this point to the lifetime sales of the ps2 at the same point.
It woudn't be unlikely. There is more room to grow.
I would like better tools to be released for developing games for the PS3, because it's obvious that developers spend a lot more on amazing PS3 games than amazing 360 games.
I could be wrong, but these are my observations.
I wouldn't call the PS2 even close to up and running still, there's next to no support for it and it hasn't seen anything beyond a port in the last 2 years. The platform is dead and Sony is just keeping it around so they can point and say "See! See!!! We did it!!! We produced a console for 10 years!!!" Just because they keep making and selling them, doesn't mean the console is being supported by developers.
The 10 year promise is like the cake, its a lie.

Actually it's around 7-8 million behind.
But it's actually selling a lot better in it's first 2 years than the PS1 was. And the PS1 reached 102 million.
there isn't even a 10 life cycle for the pS2. WHat great games have come out for it by Sony since God of War 2? They unofficially stopped supporting it in terms of games.too_much_eslim
That's a good thing. More support for the PS3 is very good.

never said it was bad. Just disputing the myth that the PS2 is a 10 year console.I wouldn't call the PS2 even close to up and running still, there's next to no support for it and it hasn't seen anything beyond a port in the last 2 years. lol, like making stuff up?
the PS2 is a CASH COW, its still sells and SONY can still make money from it. Games are still coming out for it too. HONESTLY, the PS2 is more attractive than the Wii, and why not? PS2 games look better too. Casuals, still buy the thing. the ten year promis isn't far fetched, when did the PS2 launch again?
PS1: 1995-2005
PS2: 2000-2009?
PS3: 2006-?
I think theres a good chance that it will get at least 8 years. PS2 will probably get 9.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 next month.
Ok, look SONY was hit hard the gen so they might not support the ps3 when the PS4 come out. I see SONY either quit supporting the ps3 once the ps4 comes out or come out with the ps4 much later than 2011- 3012 (when ever they feel its necessary and if I remeber correctly SONY said they want to separate them selfs from the others, so most likely they'll release the Ps4 when ever they feel like it instead of trying to beat MS or Nntendo to it).RTUUMM
I'm sure they can make that window. :P
The sony 10 year promise: Just Wait LOL??!
ahh...cows will never live that down...
On Topic: 10 years is going to feel like a long time to buy one system, might be better to wait, see how it does in a year, then buy.

I said Sony game. You know when they publish a game. Wow, fanboy much there? How many games have come out on the PS2 lately? I mean beyond the typical sports game that is on every platform known to man. What support does the console have? When was the last time a major site reviewed a PS2 game? What games are coming out from it that make the platform still active? A Dragon Ball Z that didn't even blimp on most people's radar? Also to claim that PS2 games look better than Wii games just proves that you a fanboy attempting to justify Sony and their actions.
You are right that they make money from the PS2, I mean they have to make money somewhere since the PS3 isn't pulling much in. I'm sure all 15 people who bought a PS2 this year couldn't be happier.

I said Sony game. You know when they publish a game. There hasn't been one great sony game since then.Okay, you got me there. Really, I think Sony is now relying on Multiplats and PSP ports, and considering people are still buying it, I can still see it lasting until 2010.

they'll keep selling it but not support it with games just to say it lived for ten years.shoeman12
PS2 is still being supported by games and will be till next year so 9 years is close enough to 10 same will happen with PS3 most likely.

Don't people compare the PS3's sales to the GameCube's sales? :?

Uhhhh.....Didnt the PS2 sell around 173,000 unis last month in the US alone? PS2 will easily reach its 10 year mark and then some. People didnt believe it could be done in with the PlayStation, this will be no different.

not by Sony. Sony stopped making great games for the ps2.It may not be exclusive but Sony put MLB 08: The Show on PS2 this year and it is considered a (great title here on gamespot. ;)
And I have no problem with them putting more dev power into PS3 and PSP. In fact, it would be an extremely stupid decison to do otherwise.

You are right, it is selling somewhat, however in terms of games it has next to nothing. Selling a console and supporting a console are two totally different things, all Sony is doing really is continuing to sell the PS2 and beyond that there's nothing else going on beyond a game here and there. If I were in Sony's position I'd keep selling the PS2 as well since they don't gain anything on the PS3's they sell.
I'm not saying its stupid to keep supporting it, I'm saying that a 10 year life span for a console that is being treated like a red headed step child isn't really a 10 year lifespan. Its almost like claiming that someone lived to be 80 years old, but in reality they spent the last 10 years of their life in a coma being fed through tubes, sure they are alive, but they aren't living.

not by Sony. Sony stopped making great games for the ps2.Who cares who makes the game? Games are being made for the PS2, decent games too. Thats all that matters. By far the best choice if you are gaming on a budget.

Yes but both the PSone and PS2 in from their second year onwards shot up. PSone estbalished itself and PS2 became cheap and had a whole lineup of killer apps[QUOTE="Dilrod"]Given the growth we've seen in the games industry, that's not a good thing. Its lifetime sales are actually pretty comparable at this point to the lifetime sales of the ps2 at the same point.

I am surprised not more people see this point.......or maybe they just don't want to see it...
As more devs familiarize with the system, more games will encounter much shorter development periods : you will notice suddenly that studios will consecrate more of their ressources into quality rather than on graphics and optimization for a system that was, at first, alien to them.
Expect a rise in the PS3's library : the PS2 was heavily supported due partly by third-party support, and in retrospect, due to its long lifespan as well.
If the PS3 is strongly supported by Sony at lasting 10 years, then their ressources will allow them to make sure it will grow stronger over its lifecycle.
