This week, the Nintendo Switch hit a significant milestone: it’s now sold over 20 million units since launch (something we already touched upon yesterday, when Famitsu shared an early report about it). It’s now joined the very select club of consoles that have sold over 20 million units in Japan:

  • Nintendo DS: 32 990 000 units
  • GameBoy (including GameBoy Color): 32 470 000 units
  • Nintendo 3DS: 25 150 000 units
  • PlayStation 2: 21 980 000 units

In a couple of months, the Nintendo Switch will outsell the PlayStation 2, and by the end of the year, it will be pretty close to outselling the Nintendo 3DS. Outselling the behemoths that are the GameBoy and the Nintendo DS is going to be tough, but it’s definitely possible if the new Nintendo Switch model proves a big hit and revitalizes sales.

That's it? For a country full of casuals that know nothing else but portable gaming, 20mil is pretty low.

That is more than double that of the PS4 no? And probably 100 times that of the PS5.

Interesting that you called Japan a "small" country even though it has about 125 million people.

@luxuryheart: I wonder if this will sell like the DS/GB in the end...in Japan that is but still, that’s a lot of Switch units. That would mean that the Switch could be at around 87/89 million units around the world if and only if the percentage is consistent with the world numbers. Japan has been relatively consistent in gathering 22% of the total units sold. But I’ll wait for official numbers this August 2021.

Yea Japan's been getting less and less consoles (pretty much just PS) a lot due to Sony focusing on the western market.

also PS5 just released so I don't know what's the point of that comment.

Japan is a pretty small country. But it has a shitload of people. My country is bigger and has around 10 mill.

Except that the PS5 has sold faster than the PS4 in the same time frame in Japan despite the shortage.

TwistedVoxel notes the increase brings the PS5's current total in Japan to an impressive 689,000 units sold. That's about 40,000 more consoles sold than the PlayStation 4, which in the same time frame (25 weeks post-launch) had shifted 648,000 units in Sony's home country. link

It's also worth noting that Japanese developers are more focused on developing console games than ever before. For instance, big titles that were once made for handhelds such as Pokemon, Monster Hunter, Persona, and Dragon Quest, are now made for consoles, and have been successful both at home and abroad in terms of sales.

It has been heavily speculated that good chunk of the ps5's sales in Japan end up exported to other nearby countries. The shockingly poor ps5 software sales support that as well

The PS5 has always sold out all the shipments in Japan since its launch, so the graph only shows the shipment volume of each hardware (and as you know, PS5 shipments are limited due to the shortage of chips.) Also, the Wii U sold very well there in the first year, thanks to Nintendo's huge popularity with them.

yea japan has a ton of people for such a small country. the us has 300million and japan has 100million.

when you compare the size of the us to japan this number is insane.

ive been told youre not allowed to buy cars in tokyo. you forced to use trains to travel over there because if everyone had a car youd have 24hour traffic jams.

oh and people are packed like sardines in those trains a lot of times. which causes lots of unallowed touching of girls on trains.

@KBFloYd: Japan, I am told is about the size of California which has about 37 million people according to the 2010 Census. Japan, in the meanwhile as about 128 million people, most of them living in coastal urban areas like Tokyo.

Because so many people are living in the urban areas, it should not come as a suprise the high cost of living and mass use of public transportation in the country.

That explains why they aren't buying the PS5. Shit doesn't fit in their room. Not their fault.

The apartments are tiny, but they actually use that space well. But yeah, my brother talks about going over there and I always try to tell him that it's going to be a culture shock. Like we live in the USA south and the homes are big over here for a decent price. He's talking about going to a country where the apartments are small and expensive. My sister and I used to love HGTV, and the Americans would constantly complain about the tiny living areas of European cities and Asian cities.

Plus you can own a car in Japan, but it's a bitch with the documents and all that, so I've heard. So in that case, might as well take public transportation. Especially when most things are within walking distance to the bus station.

Probably because there are fewer handhelds than at any time since the launch of the Game Boy. Why would Capcom make a mobile Monster Hunter or Square a handheld Dragon Quest when there are no systems to play them on?

Capcom just made a mobile Monster Hunter on the Switch, and Square Enix put Dragon Question on the Switch. lol.

Also, they're doing both. They make games on the Switch to appeal to their Japanese audience while making games on the consoles and PC to appeal to their Western audience. It's the best of both worlds.

@luxuryheart: The Switch isn’t a handheld/mobile, though. It’s its own weird hybrid thing.
