The Switch will dominate indie/arcade.

Recently picked up the switch and am loving it so far. Got 3 games for it odessey, Zelda, and Bayonetta 2. This week I realized something, from now on I see absolutely no point in getting any indie/arcade games for my PC or PS4. They aren't demanding games and the option of it being portable is just too great. From now on I can't imagine getting any indie/arcade games on my PS4 if it's also on the switch. What do you guys think?

Dude, Killer Queen is going to rock. And with Nintendo Classics coming monthly (or has that plan changed) arcade games are going to be alive and well on the Switch.

I also get at least half my indie games on the Switch now. And there are so many excellent ones, too. That rival AAA games. Overall I'm at a point that I am more interested in the indie industry as a whole than in the AAA industry.

Congrats on your new hardware. Here's a short-list of smaller games I would put on your wishlist:

  • Voez
  • Steamworld Dig 2
  • Stardew Valley (if you haven't played it already)
  • Celeste
  • Yokus Island Express
  • Hollow Knight
  • Monsters 2
  • Blaster Master Zero
  • (Overcooked if you have at least one friend to play with.)

And in the near future I would definitely keep track of:

  • Wargroove
  • Killer Queen Black
  • Little Dragon's Cafe
  • Bloodstained
  • Megaman 11

No way it will beat Steam or the overall pc indie scene. Don't be naive.

Good point. This is why the system filled a gap that no one realised needed filling.

There are switch like devices for pc games as well, you can pick them up and get the same experience but superior.

@KungfuKitten: good list, I want to pick up Celeste for sure, owlboy, and I'm going to get the megaman x collection later this month.

Steamworld dig any good, I know I'm late but I never picked it up or tried it? Is it like a modern day dig dug?

You won't regret Steamworld Dig 2. It's a tiny bit like dig dug, in that you dig in a 2D environment. Things can fall on top of you. It's not half as arcade-y. But it has 2D platformer combat and traversal. And a little bit of a metroidvania map-style. But all those elements are only lightly represented. It has little puzzle/challenge-rooms that are mostly optional. It's a fun little gem that won't demand too much attention or time from you.

ONLY if youre portable fan makes sense what you saying. As many said before they having their switch docked, ala console only, and they are not into handheld gaming. Why for those people, that are many, to buy Switch when they can buy same games half price or lower on PC for example ?

I never thought I would be buying indies off anything other than steam, but here I am buying nearly all of my indies off of Switch. OP is right. Switch is fantastic for indies.

Some indie developers are reporting that the Switch version of their games are selling better than versions on any other platform including PC. The developers of Blossom Tales, for example, have said that the Switch version has sold 20 times more copies than the Steam version.

Yeah it's very good. It's not perfect though; the prices are higher than PC and there are no achievements but since I like to bring my library around with me, it's nice to have my collection accessible wherever I am. I really like it and it's why I buy my indie games on Switch when I can. I don't mind paying extra if it means I have the accessibility.

I'm not sure when or if the indie bubble will burst on Switch but currently indie devs are seeing great return on the platform; even better than PC in some cases.

Right now, I'm away on holidays and I could bring my Switch with me and play Mighty Gunvolt Burst.

I’m not really that big on indie games myself but I do agree with the general sentiment of this thread. Before I got the Switch I didn’t think that I’d use the portable mode of the system as much as I have however being able to play games portably has become a much bigger draw for me.

@KungfuKitten: I honestly don't care that much for collecting them to bother. :P

If the game has in-game challenges, I will go for them but that's only if the game itself is compelling enough to play repeatedly and get good at.

PC versions for indie games are usually significantly cheaper than the Switch, and usually released on it first.

Get ARMS. It's not an indie game, but kind of feels like one with a AAA level of polish.

@tryit: what do you consider "beating" is PC a more enjoyable experience? Or are you saying that it can't beat the PC sales. In regards to sales, ya your proabably right. Everyone owns a PC not everyone owns a switch. I still stand by that the indie/arcade games are much more enjoyable on the switch. Take out the PC all together and compare it to PS4 and xbox1 it's a no brainer, whether sales or enjoyability.

alll of it

I gotta say you seem to be completely out of the loop on what is happening on the PC these days.

what is happening in the PC space for indies is very similar to what happened with cell phones when the smart phone came. it really is that radical and to not be aware of it really takes skill on your part

@tryit: I'm not blind to the fact that PC has a huge indie scene, everything indie -wise is going to be on PC first because it's easier to build a game for PC as a developer. My point is if you have both a PC and a switch, and let's say you want to get gunvolt, or Sonic mania, or Celeste , there is hardly any reason to go for the steam version over the switch unless there is a sale.why would I want to limit myself to a desk or table? Besides the possibility of saving 5-10 bucks I see no advantage.

I definitely don't see the enjoyability being higher picking it up on PC rather the switch if you own both.

It won't beat PC but still... the Switch and Indies are a great match. If only it had great special sales like Steam.

It's easier for indies stand out in the Eshop than Steam. Many indies are given a second life on Switch.

Playing Hollow Knight on it right now btw. I love it.

Pretty much, Nintendo's roots has always been with the Arcades. They're the only company that embraced Arcade Gameplay.

first off this indie explosion has not been a thing until 2013 specifically.

second off, the vast majority of awesome indie titles are not going to be on the switch is the point here. Speaking to simple indies (unlike say The Forest and Ark) games like Another Brick in the Mall, RimWorld, Prison Architect, Academia, Sim Airport and MANY more are not going to be on the Switch.

And those games you mentioned, I have never even heard of.

now to be clear for arcade games I agree with you, but indie in general now means a huge amount of different types of games, everything from The Forest and Ark to Starship Theory

I picked up the switch a few months ago. Mario is a fun game. Zelda was completely overrated to me and was pretty boring. Also, I could see indie being a good thing for switch. However, if they can compete with PC prices then I would consider getting the Switch version.

Portable indie gaming? Wow, that's completely new. No, wait. The Vita has been doing that for years and it's basically the only reason for the Vita to exist.

Seriously though, I buy most indie games on the Vita. At least the uh... retro looking ones. The main reason for me is not portability but graphics. I absolutely can't stand retro graphics on a big screen. Hotline Miami for example. Fabulous game, mad fun. But playing that on a 27'' monitor gives me eye cancer. Won't even try it on a 65'' TV fearing that my head would immediately explode. The Vita screen is the perfect size for that kind of games. Long live the Vita!

Why would anybody want to play that on a big screen? Please share.

I'm buying heaps of indie games on my Switch. It has quickly become my go-to system for indie games.

I'd happily re-buy most PC indie games on the Switch as well. Slay the Spire and Into The Breach would be excellent on a portable device.

Do they still make games for the vita? im not being sarcastic but i dont even think they sell games for it any more at my local gamestop. I have a 2DS XL, is the vita worth it? proabably would be sweet little piece of tech to hack and put emulators on.
