...so PCs?

Yes, but consoles.

It's still just a PC, if I put on a gorilla costume am I now a gorilla?

At least it will not have the virus called Windows.

@sSubZerOo: Who cares if they sold out on the Steam website? Those are people who are actively seeking these things out.

The bottom line is that the average consumer walking into a Best Buy, Walmart, etc has no clue what the hell "Valve" or a "Steambox" even are.

But they know what Nintendo is. They know what a Playstation is. They know what an XBOX is.

There's going to be a VERY small percentage of people who actually end up buying these things.

The steam box should have been an actual console with fixed hardware so developers could target one set of specs.

They could have made HL3 an exclusive launch title and it would have sold like gangbusters.

What they are trying to do with the Steam boxes makes absolutely no sense. There are already plenty of outlets that sell prebuilt gaming PC's.

Do they really think the Steam OS is a killer app?

The Problem Valve would have with Making a Console with Fixed Specs running Steam OS and having Half-Life 3 as a Launch title is that they have MILLIONS of users on Steam already.

Hell that's really the big problem with Steam Machines. Why bother putting out a System for sell when your main target audience probably already owns one of those systems? Maybe the low end users? I don't know.

Maybe it would have been better had they made one System SKU and then advertise that it's customizable. No different from PCs mind you, but It certainly would be better than having one $400 sku and a $2500 sku that no one will buy.

Really though I think Steam Link + Controller will sell loads better. I'm sure there's a lot of people that have High End Rigs that would love to stream their games to another TV without lugging around their Giant cases everywhere.
