You could also buy a PS2 ($50 used), GCN ($25 used) and XBox ($30 used) and $395 worth of games (at an average of $15 each, so about 25 games). I'd take that over anything offered this generation. Especially considering that $500 will only get you 1-3 games for a system.

Hard to judge, the accessories you are buying aren't truly necessary and i'd rather have more games than a couple of bits of plastic hanging off my ps3.

I don't think tax should be included as it varies from place to place. It's only 8% where I live and if take a 20 min drive south, I don't have to pay tax at all.

I found that my 360 (no add ons) + Mass Effect, BioShock Gears of War (that's what I bought with my 360) had a lot more value than both setups you posted combined. And it was cheaper.

The only problem with that reasoning is that you can't judge the "overall" value without taking a person's gaming preferences in consideration.

I choose the addons because they make each conle more like there opnnent

(xbl acrd adds online to compare with free psn)

(ps3 media reader adds two usb ports to compare with 360s 5)

I have tried to make the features of the two as close as possible. I didnt add alot of games because games are subjective and cant be countered were as a bluray drive is clearly of higher value then a dvd drive and 5 usb ports > 2. The prices are also near same.

Ppl are welcome to create there own lists (under 500)

Yes you can. Pretend both of them can play the exact same set of games. There, you got rid of gaming preferences.

Why not? Usually fact based discussions rely on theoretical concepts. And as I am trying to explain what I believe is fact, I think its perfectly reasonable.

the ps3 comes with a cable for charging the ds3. The 360 game-pad doesnt. The rechargeable battery is needed to use the 360 dock. The 360 dock isnt needed, but neighter is the ps3s. However both making a gaming setups look good and more organized.

It's like saying "if you pretend the Earth is flat then you can't say the Earth it round". We are discussing a very specific (an real) case: the value of the two as gaming consoles. Which can't be defined leaving a person's gaming preferences aside due to the subjective nature of the meaning of value. Pretending things won't change that.

I know that. that's why I argued to why there's a charging dock for both lists.

I know the rechargeable battery is needed for the dock, who buys a play and charge kit for that.... you can buy a battery pack by itself for half, but if we're arguing value, you take the best value. a AA charger, and not for the sake of 'look good and organize' a AA charger takes up less space and has uses in other appliances.

You can compare all the features if you want, that does not change the immense role games play (and personal preferences) play when talking about a console's value.

So we cant compare the value of these consoles gaming capabilities as games are too subjective. But we can compare their entertainment hub capabilities.

You really don't need to spend $30 for a docking station for the Xbox, and $20 for play and charge kit. You can easily pick up a set of rechargeable batteries and charger for around $10. An extra pack of 4 NiMh AA batteries costs around $6. That way when your batteries go dead, pop in a fresh set, and use the charger to recharge the old ones.Takes about 30 seconds to swap out the batteries and go back to wireless playing of your Xbox. Works much better than a play and charge kit, or tethering your PS3 controller to the console with a long cable.

I never understand why people try to blow this controller battery issue out of proportion.

Also you don't need to pay $50 for Live to play games on the Xbox. You only need it if you want to play multi-player games. A lot of people game and never play online. I've also never paid more than $30 for my Live cards. Just watch for when they are on sale.

So basically if you are comparing the systems it is

$350 for a 250GB PS3 Slim

$300 for a250GB 360S, + $10 for a battery charger with 2 AA batteries. = $310

So basically $40 less for a 360S, but you do loose the Blu-ray drive. Everything else is the same, except extra USB ports on the 360S, and of course wireless N on the 360s, as opposed to the wireless G on the PS3. Although I would assume Sony will upgrade to N soon.

The PS3 is a better value stand alone or with peripherals. Depending on the person though, the 360 may be a better value to them.

Are you telling me that if i put my controller on top of the 360 it will magically get power?

EDIT: you are correct that it wasnt needed because he had already included the plug n play, but your choice of words was terrible.

I don't buy consoles based on their features, I judge them by their games. But if you are going for the most features then the ps3 would probably win.
