Many of us here complain non-stop about the lack of creativity in today's video games. Most of us see it that it's all big publishers pumping out rushed movie tie-ins, sequels to dying franchises, and yearly sports updates.

Big publishers however, are quick to blame us, the gamer, for not buying their new IPs and forcing them to invest heavily in more secure avenues such as Halo 4.

But who's really to blame, what's really stopping us from playing truly innovative games?

I personally think that the publishers' answer is a cop out, and that they don't market their new IP's aggressively enough. Which is why games like Mirror's Edge, Beyond Good & Evil, and Brutal Legend don't sell as well as the movie tie-ins, sequels, or sports games.

What's your take?

You know, I've always found posts like that irritating. I mean, I know that it is spelled wrong yet I still understood it as "secure avenue", yet instead of talking about the OP's point, they just go on to say "what does X mean?". Is it hard to put 2 and 2 together? Just my little gear grinder I suppose for the day.

Back to original point: I think a lot of times it comes down to the gamers themselves and how much they are willing to support the new IP itself. The new IP's are like the new shy guy on the block, depending upon how much support they get can help other new kids come out to join the fun.

If the developers put out a good game then I'm willing to spend $60 for it, and keep it in my collection.

If they put out a not so good game, then I am less inclined to do this. I will either not buy the game, or buy it when the price drops.

In the case of games I am unsure of I will usually buy it, but if my options to resell a stinker are limited then I will not take a chance on a game.

It's really very simple. Give me a good value for my money and I will buy it. It's basically Capitalism in a nutshell.

I don't blame the developers or publishers because they're just giving people what they seem to want. I blame the gamers themselves and no one else.

This late into the generation, you're going to see less and less innovation on consoles.

That's why we're seeing so many HD re-releases. And think about how many "3"s there are this year (BF3,GeoW3,UC3).

Wait until the next gen, starting with the Wii U, to see innovation and creativity again.

There's only so much you can do with old hardware for so long.

Mirror's Edge, Brutal Legend and Beyond Good and Evil got plenty of marketing... If they were better maybe they would have sold better.

Mirror's Edge was a great concept that could have been executed better but I'm convinced that if Beyond Good and Evil's main character was male you wouldn't have half the people claiming it's a gem. It really wasn't that great a game. And Brutal Legend really felt cut short.

It takes more than novel ideas to sell a game at sixty dollars.

Publishers are 100% correct. The majority of gamers don't want new and creative games. They want more of the same with refinements. Just look at last month. There are 4 games that are released yearly in the top 4. "Creative games" unless they are absolutely fantastic won't sell, I don't care how much you advertise them. Software: Madden NFL 12 (360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PSP)** Electronic Arts Gears of War 3 (360)** Microsoft (Corp) - >2 Million Dead Island (360, PS3, PC) Deep Silver FIFA Soccer 12 (360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PSP, 3DS) Electronic Arts NHL 12 (360, PS3) Electronic Arts Deus Ex: Human Revolution (360, PS3, PC)** Square Enix Inc Resistance 3 (PS3) Sony (Corp) Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (Wii, NDS, 360, 3DS, PS3, PSP, PC) LucasArts Call of Duty: Black Ops (360, PS3, NDS, Wii, PC)** Activision Blizzard Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine (360, PS3, PC) THQ

I usually only see this as true on consoles. I've found lots of interesting, fun, quirky games on the DS and on the PC (available on Steam). But when I look at console games, it almost always looks like the same tired, boring old games all the time. I'm finding the most interesting games are on XBLA and PSN rather than retail outlets.

It's easy, new Ips usually sell horrible, big publishers want to make money, for each triple A new IP they need a rehash to get the loss back. If you truly want unique IPs look for small publishers (like NISA) or indie games. This gen is flooded with unique games and new IPs, I have no idea where all this whining comes from :S

Eh, I've seen lots of troll posts and what not where people ignore the message stated and basically criticize the poster for doing a spelling mistake by pointing it out. Guess I didn't think people were going to jump on me for saying my thoughts.

Like I was telling Arach, I've seen people post where they point out the spelling error as a form of criticism. I'm not trying to speak down to shadowlord if english is his second language or truly didn't understand what the TC meant by the post, not in the slightest.

Demons Souls proved that an excellent game can be successfull even with little or no advertisement. There still is plenty of people that want to play real games (not dumbed down interactive movies) and are ready to pay for them.

Also, there are actually plenty of great and innovative games this gen like Little Big Planet, Valkyria Chronicles, Heavy Rain, Gearz, Halo and Forza (I included Gearz, Halo and Forza so that lems with torches and pitchforks wont go after me).

TCs arguments ("industry is killing the gaming") have been around at least since 1994. And gaming is still alive. I just think the time has come to quit making those silly "cinematic :? " FPSs and go for a bit more gamey games again, and thats imo exactly what will happen next gen.

No, in the end it's the consumer who's to blame. Games like Mirror's Edge and Brutal Legend got enough attention before release and were marketed with enough coverage. Problem is that people didn't buy those games cause they rather spend their money on the CODs and whatnots. It's just that the majority of gamers does not want to take a gamble with the games they buy. "New IP? New game concept? There's a risk I might spend 60 bucks on a game and not like it. So I better stick to the games I know I enjoy / what all my friends play so I can play with them". If sequels didn't sell, publishers wouldn't keep pumping them out like crazy. But people do buy them. Truth is, most people out there do not care for innovation. If the sequel of 'game whatever' now comes with a flame thrower in part two, people will buy it. Gamers like us, that (perhaps) do really care about this and even join forums to write about this, we may not be swayed. But average Joe out there doesn't mind, and he keeps the money coming, re-assuring the publishers in their strategies. Sad, but true.

Best low budget/independent game I've played this gen: Mount & Blade: Warband. Yes, graphically it looks like ****, but it sure is fun as hell, and runs quite good as long as you have decent CPU capability. GO BUY IT NOW! Xenoclash is pretty cool too as well as Red Orchestra, though it's got networking problems at the moment :/

Beyond Good and Evil is an awful game.

It's short, the story is badly put together, and the "innovations", weren't developed - AT ALL.

It's like they started to make a game, gave up about 25% of the way into it, and then jumped to the ending.

Please . . . developers . . . do not make any more games like that.

I've never used touch/gyroscope in gaming and will soon with vita

Everything is up to the consumer. Us consumers shape the indutry. New IPS, creativity, innovation just doesnt sell the way it should. developers arent making enough money to even survive anymore. Its always the biggest selling, mega fracnhises that see massive returns in money. Since its so expensive to make games we must support them. If you want to see more than just rehashes every year then go to your local store & buy games that arent your typical mega franchises.

We must give games a chance but gamers today seem to be so subborn to anything new or anything that isnt getting mega number scores from reviewers. I think the gamers are the ones to blame. You can see it everywhere. I dont know how many times i;ve said this but . . . . when every great, unique game this year (Deus ex, Skyrim, Assassins creed, Uncharted 3, Batman, Saints row, etc)¸gets out sold by another mediocre fps rehash (codmw3) its a sad world for the industry.

Gamers did this, not developers, not publishers. they would be nowhere without sales, & consumers. We are the driving force behind it all.

People simply don't care for artsy games. The same thing applies to movies and music. Most people would rather watch Transformers than something by Andrei Tarkovsky. The problem with games is that they are so damn expensive to make, that they have to sell a certain number of copies to be considered a success. The focus on photorealism in games is only going to make it worse.
