Wii maker pushing weight-loss games to women

Nintendo is rolling out a console attachment that lets users do yoga or push-ups and measure body mass. A company executive says the goal is expansion of the Wii's market without alienating core gamers.

By The Wall Street Journal

Nintendo's Wii gaming console introduced sedentary gamers to the idea of moving off the couch. Now Nintendo (NTDOY, news, msgs) is coming out with the Wii Fit, an add-on to the gaming system designed to appeal to women looking to lose weight.

The $90 attachment, dubbed the "Balance Board," expands the range of games that can be played on the Wii to include activities such as yoga and push-ups. The Balance Board -- which resembles bathroom scales -- also tracks a user's weight and body-mass index.

The Wii Fit is a daring move for Nintendo, aimed at broadening the gaming market -- dominated by younger men -- to women.

To get their attention, the company plans a massive marketing campaign ahead of the product's release in the United States on May 19, including a public-relations effort now under way. Television, outdoor and print ads begin the week the product becomes available. Ads via Omnicom Group's Goodby Silverstein & Partners will carry the tagline: "How will it move you?"

Since its release about 18 months ago, the Wii has been a smash hit -- so much so that it's still difficult to buy in the United States. In Japan, where the Wii Fit is on the market, it has also proved hugely popular.

Still, the new product is something of a gamble, moving Nintendo away from core young-male gamers, who could be turned off by the fact that Mom and girls think the Wii Fit is cool.

I don't think nintendo ment for this to be a weight loss video game. If anything it tells you how much you weigh which might encourage you to lose weight, but not by playing the game. But you know if they really market it this way then it will sell tons of units.

Funny thing is, MSN is a Microsoft owned website. I wonder if this is Microsoft's way of making the Wii look like a non-gaming machine ;)

That's the beauty of Wii Fit (at least from a marketing perspective), Nintendo doesn't have to say it'll help you lose weight, but the media is going to hype it as a $90 home gym.

Actually it's pretty cool for any fitness buff. You should look into it before you go knocking it. It keeps track of some pretty neat statistics that even the highest priced gyms couldn't give you.

Or may M$ has a soft spot for Nin. I mean Viva Pinata ,a M$ video game, is coming out for for DS. Maybe in the future Nin, and M$ will team up more together. it'd be super cool if M$ let Nin use XBL. espeacially for SSBB

in my humble opinion the Wii is a gaming machine like windows 95 was a gaming OS...

microsoft doesnt have to portray the Wii as less than a gaming machine, nintendo have done that all by themselves...and before you say it, yes i HATE the Wii. its not a gaming machine. its a nintendo fanservice box. nothing more.

I can't find the game anywhere and the delivery boy seems to have vanished into thin air leaving me to sit here with a somewhat sad face.
Didn't expect to care.

And this game has been wriggling its way into womens minds for some time already... alike here.

A great excuse for people to be more lazy about health. Just suck it up, got jogging, go lift weights, press yourself and stress your body. This stuff is pathetic....

I work out every day, and I have absolutely no interest in this game, and I use that term loosely. I view it as a huge gimmick, and the only way I know how to voice my opinion on it as a consumer is to not buy it, even though I'm sure it'll sell overly well, but hell I tried.

For once we completely agree. I get atleast twenty times the workout just running for an hour or so. I'm not about to spend 90 bucks for a horrible work out.

I dont think this product is for me

1- it will probably bore me to tears. Maybe nintendo should make some wiiware for it or something

2- I am not heavy by any means but I think I would break this thing. I remember running in place on the NES pad. If japanese controllers are designed for japanese hands then I dont have high expectations for this balance board

So there you have it. I would break the thing, but wouldn't really care since I was so bored with it anyway.

Congrats! I work out as well and will be buying the game. DO I expect it to be as hard as my normal workouts? Nope, but I expect it to be fun and maybe break a little sweat.

I'm pretty worried that if this thing sells well, we'll start seeing offspring of Wii Fit popping up all over the place. I didn't buy a Wii to get in shape; I bought a gym membership for that. Hell, when Nintendo announced the Revolution, I was excited, because I genuinely thought whatever they were going to do would have interesting ramifications for the videogame industry; I had no idea that what they were doing was creating a system that would take steps towards alienating its dedicated userbase in favor of getting non-gamers to buy ridiculous accessories to their "gaming" system.

Yeah f'ing right. As if their core gamers have been anticipating a game that let's you do excericises for $90 that you can do for free.

you can dance to music without a pad and play air guitar without a game and toy guitar but why do we buy those? feedback and fun. those games track you progress and indicate when you're doing something wrong. they also motivate you to get better a lot more than just doing the actions yourself without the feedback.

Yeah you got a point there. I still won't be getting this though. It looks more to me like an instructional video than a game.

I personally just find it extremely annoying that I can't get a copy of Mother 3 to come stateside (or an Earthbound sequel for the Wii, for that matter), but in another year or two I'd probably be able to purchase the Wii Boflex to go with that whacked-out Wii Fit board...

Then you haven't been reading about it. You're right, if you mean that just watching someone else use it, you won't break a sweat.

But if you follow its instructions, you will.

I dont necessarily have interest in WiiFit, but I do see potential in the balance board. I would love a Punch-Out game that uses it as an option (I think Don King boxing is already implementing it). Snowboarding games could be hella fun. Im not all hyped on WiiSki, but we'll see.

Agreed. I think WiiFit will be cool, but I am very interested to see what other games come out that utilize the board.
