Which is just fine, because the way the industry was headed, stepping forward leads straight into a dead end. The Wii is the first competitor in a new race now. :)magus-21
I agree and disagree. It's definitely a step forward, just in a different direction.
Well, when I first got to play the xbox360. I was expecting something new and totally different.
After about 20 minutes playing perfect dark 2, I had to remind myself that this was, in fact, a"Next Gen" console.
...pathetic. Â

Umm... that's a good example of an oxymoron...Anyway, in my opinion, it is the 360 and PS3 that are just going sideways, and the Wii is the first true step forward. The 360 and PS3 are just the same old same old. Last gen, the step forward was by X-Box, initiating online, and before that the N64 brought analog sticks, while the PS1 created the disc format. The Snes had shoulder buttons, and the Nes brought the first D-Pad.  Up until last gen, graphical upgrades also improved gameplay. However, the graphical progression this gen only made things prettier, but they didn't change or improve the way the game was played.

I agree and disagree. A "sidestep" implies a dodge of some kind, followed by stagnation. Wii is definitely marching forward (following a slight pivot step). I like girls. A lot.
But I don't agree that the 360 and PS3 are moving sideways. They are also moving forward, but they didn't realize the road to gaming heaven turned off to the right. They're headed to the land of...
And what is the purpose of a sidestep? To dodge an oncoming force that you obviousely have no hope of surviving. Nintendo had no chance of surviving after the disaster that was GC, so now they're clinging on by rereleasing the GC with a "cute new controller" and a stupid name. Since it's only half the price of PS3 and 360, stingy people are buying it, and so are Nintendo's rejuvinated-and-moronic-as-ever fanbase.TimstuffCorrect. That oncoming force is the phenomenon called "diminishing returns," and it's about to hit the 360 and PS3 like a freight train hitting a Minicooper.

You care more about Nintendo's profits than you care about the quality of their product? Why? Are you a consumer, or a shareholder?

That is so true... especially after playing PC games with better graphics right at that time, PDZ is downright awful in every aspect. Playing like PD on N64 with suped up Xbox1 visuals.
The problem with the Wii though is that they took a complete sidestep. No technical improvement whatsoever and a brand new controller. It has a lot of appeal to play games a new way... but as a long term gaming console there just isn't much there. Unless devs start figuring ways to make gameplay deeper and more interative than wiggle and slash, people are going to get very very bored of it quickly. The visuals will look plain awful and the games really less interactive because lack of processing power... so everyone is going to have to take the step forward at some point.Â
Correct. I never said anything about profits. Nintendo is the first to truly see that the path of "OMG ZE GRAFIX" leads to a dead end, if not worse. I'm more excited for what the Wii will bring to gaming than the next Mass Effect or Gears of War (even though I really, really, really want Mass Effect, more than any other 360 or PS3 game, but that just goes to show you how much more excited I am for the Wii's potential than the 360's or PS3's potential).Which is just fine, because the way the industry was headed, stepping forward leads straight into a dead end. Well when you're running a race all on your own, you tend to take your time, that's how it's feeling so far with the Wii. It has yet to wow me.Â

Only for now, and only because it had so much to risk embarking on this new direction. When the other two get into the new race, Nintendo will turn the focus back on power like it always has. That will be an interesting race to watch. I imagine all three consoles will sport uniquely different controller styles. Please Log In to post.
