Guys, let's face it: Nintendo doesn't understand gaming. They think gaming is something done simply for fun - leisure, if you will - and that it doesn't have to be something only for people with the devotion to spend hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars a year to experience. Disgusting, right? Don't they know that video games are only for the most serious of gamers? Don't they know that we demand that every title be a cinematic experience that dazzles with only the most sophisticated graphics and complicated gameplay? When did Nintendo forget that? Do they honestly want us sharing our beloved hobby with people who are satisfied with the most simplistic premises? No way should they cram this casual trash down our throats. I refuse to give up the hardcore monopoly on gaming so that others may also enjoy it. Only we, the few and the proud "traditional" players should be considered. If the game doesn't involve me shooting something with a gun (or occassionally stabbing with a knife or even cutting with a chainsaw), why should I care? The answer is, I shouldn't. And the day the averagea 5-year-old girl or 50-year-old man enjoys the same pastime as I do is the day I quit.
I feel this way about all my hobbies. Just the other day I was fishing at a lake with my hardcore buddies, and we were out on a small boat, staring at our lines and being as quiet as can be, when another small boat comes humming by us. Do you know what I saw? A father and his two kids, a boy and a girl both no older than 10, laughing and having a good time. I couldn't believe it. They didn't seem to have any tackle boxes or gps systems or anything. Just a few poles and a minnow bucket. The boy even had one of those Fisher Price toy setups! It was sickening. All my friends looked at each other, sad and confused. We couldn't believe that such casual anglers were allowed in the same lake as us. Of course when they trolled by, they waved at us, all happy like, totally oblivious to the fact that they were scaring away all of our fish. Posers. We didn't even give them the time of day. We just reeled in our lines, and without saying a word just shoved all our fishing gear into the water. We all vowed on the ride home never to fish again. How can we, when the fishing industry turned its back on us?
Anyway, back to my point. Nintendo thinks they can just make gaming easier and more accessible to the general public. Well they can't without ruining the entire industry! Everything traditional gaming stood for is thrown out the window with their new philosophy. Oh sure, they'll throw us loyal customers a bone every now and then. We'll get our Super Mario Galaxy's, our Metroid Prime 3's, our Super Smash Brother Brawl's, our Disaster: Day of Crisis's, and our Mario Kart's, just to name a few. But in the end, we all know who they're catering to - and it ain't us. It's someone else. And that scares the crap out of us. That's why we should support the other companies. They're the ones trying to keep our hobby right where it should be: where it has been all along. Killzone, Halo, Crysis, Bioshock, Call of Duty 4, Haze: that's all the diversity we need. And so long as companies devote all their time to those style of games, we'll be ok.
That's why we have to support them. We need to go out and spend as much money as we can on the XBOX 360, PS3, and high-end PC's, as well as every "hardcore" game that appears on their platforms. Only by speaking with our wallets can our voice of defiance truly be heard in the video game world. Only then can we make a difference of no difference at all. So what are you waiting for, SW? Go out there and spend, spend, spend!
