The Wii is next-gen. Why do people deny this?

Now I have read some crazy things but one of the craziest has to be this claim made by some that the Wii is not a next gen console. Believe me when I tell you that I am not a fan of any particular system. Instead, I am a fan of video games. I can appreciate what all syatems have to offer and wish the best for the Wii, PS3 and 360. There are/will be great titles for each and as a person who loves video games, the only ones who are true winners in this "war" are the gamers themselves.

That said, I find the "not next-gen" claim mentioned earlier completely unfounded. These are some of the basis' of said claim:

It is a GC with different controls

Now maybe I was not reading things right when the news hit that the Wii is at least twice as powerful as the GC. If power is what defines a next-gen console, then the Wii is obviously one.

It is not as powerful as the PS3 and 360

Here, one is pretty much saying that MS and Sony define what is or isn't next-gen. Bogus. It is the next Nintendo home console. It was released during this generation of consoles. Hence the term "next-gen".

It doesn't have any good games

This is simply subjective and a matter of taste and opinion. This does not fly. It may not have the hardware for a game like Oblivion but it does have the hardware for games like MP3 and SMG. I'm going to guess that the latter two could not be possible on the GC.

Now, maybe I'm delusional. I'm leaving it up to the good people of this board to either agree or disagree. Either way, I wish everyone happy gaming.

Nowadays, the Wii isn't.  The PS4, XBox720 and Nintendo's next system are the next generation.  Besides, even Nintendo said that the Wii was part of the 'New Generation', so really nobody is on your side.

Nintendo them-selves said it wasn't next-gen, its "new gen". Never the less, Wii is next-gen. Lets use an analogy I like to use in this instance: Lets say you had a kid. Lets say kids name was rick. If i went up to him and beat him with a bat to where he was slightly slower and uglier than the other kids, does that make him any less your off spring? Hes still the next generatino. Yeah, I read where Nintendo said that. Then I remembered many other things Nintendo has said that turned out to be bogus. I love the analogy you gave.

The hardware is not next gen. It has the same architechture as the 6 year old GameCube with more ram and higher clock speeds. It's like the difference between a 7300 and a 7900 computer graphics card.... 6 years from now both are so outdated it doesn't matter that the 7900 is more powerful and they'll both suck ass.

Have you ever thought maybe people think its not next gen because it basically is a freaking Gamecube. Same hardware different controller and o boy new casing and wifi and its like worth suddenly $150 more than a Gamecube I dont think so. People think the PS3 is a ripoff well its not and for one reason alone it has a Blu Ray player and 60 gb hard drive and Wifi all built in. Wii may sell well but mostly to casuals as true gamers will lean towards the 360 and PS3 due to the graphical capabilties and yes graphics do matter as I found myself getting irritated by the Wii's graphics on many games when I borrowed ths system from my friend for a weekend...Thrasherx2k1

Because the hardware has the same design as the Gamecube, with higher clock speeds and more ram. It's like graphics card generations... there are low end and high end graphics cards each generation. The Wii is the high end and GC the low end, but they are still of the same gpu generation and only capable of the same effects and such.... while PS3 and 360 are mid-range tech of about 5 complete generations ahead.

If you are going by the most basic definition of "next-gen" in that Wii is the successor to Gamecube then it counts as next-gen, but thats the only basis for it.

The system follows no other paradigm of what is traditionally "next-gen". The system certainly isn't a generational leap in technology and the games currently reflect this (primarily PS2/PSP ports and ports of old Gamecube titles), it also doesn't have any significant advancement in any other area aside from control and the PS3/360 certainly have that as well.
