I'll start by saying I own a Wii, 360, DS, PSP, and a gaming PC.

So I noticed that people are saying things like the Wii is back. But the problem with that is, even if the Wii got apparently like 10 new games in the next 2-3 months that still would not matter. The Wii is great for multiplayer and it has a few good games for singleplayer. Because the thing is, the Wii's games are much lower quality than PS3/360's.

The top Wii games like Brawl and No More Heroes if released on a next gen console even if they made the graphics updated would recieve "good" reviews at the most. Because of so many reasons the best Wii games only compare to decent next gen games. The only game that would hold up as amazing on a 360/PS3 (graphics aside) would be Super Mario Galaxy. And here are the facts about the Wii compared to next gen games:

  • Wii has far worse graphics
  • Friend Codes
  • Overall poor online (I.E. Brawl)
  • Almost no games have mic support
  • No DLC on anything but music games
  • Horrible amount of memory (even with SD card)
  • No achievements/trophies
  • Only 420p support
  • Can not play DVDs
  • No MP3 support
  • No menu themes
  • Very few FPSs
  • Poor power

So looking at all of these factsand not opinions how can anybody say that the Wii is even competing against the PS3/360? The only thing it has going for it is good sales but those are from casual gamers. I used to think the Wii was a great console too until I bought the 360. And then I realized that all the tons of Wii games I had just weren't any good compared to the 360. And again, my question is, looking at all of this how can anyone say the Wii is competing with the 360/PS3?

Yeah, that's just wrong. That's not even the only first party game that would "hold up".

Why can't Wii be in the console war?

There are no strict guidelines to the console playing field. Therefore they do not have to be even.

They just have to cater to gamers, which all consoles do. If it doesn't cater to you, then you can't just dismiss it out of hand.

Sorry, but some of those points are just terrible

  • Worse raphics? Yeah. The PS2 was the weakest last gen, but that didn't stop it from competing with the other 2.
  • The memory is fine for what you download.
  • Achievements arnd trophies are pointless. I still have no idea why people take them so seriously. Meaningless little rewards don't stop the wii from competing.
  • Most people already have multiple DVD players. I don't see how this is a factor.
  • Yes, it does have MP3 support. I don't know where you got that from.
  • Oh boo hoo i can't change the menu theme  That doesn't mean anything at all
  • Ok, few FPS's... How does that stop it from competing?
  • OK, it's the weakest. But like I said, so was the PS2.

Sure you made some good points, but mst were just flat out bad. Sorry. Don't try and dismiss the wii from systemwars just because it's beating your console of choice.

You heard it here. If it can't play DVD's, it's not a serious console.

Does this mean the 360 is not a console? If I buy the 360 arcade most of these features are absent as well. Sorry Microsoft. I hate fanboys so freeaking much

You should read GS standards of review... a good game is a good game regardless of the console... Your notion that Great Wii = Good Xbox360 or PS3 is totally wrong.

ColdP1zza

Horrible amount of memory even with SD cards? Can't you use like, 8gig SD cards with the update now? Or maybe the max was 4, but either way that's a lot of VC and WiiWare games. Unless you're planning to put music/pictures/videos on your Wii, which reminds me...

What does the ability to play DVD's, MP3's, and menu themes have anything to do with gaming at all? You can go watch your DVD's on your computer, your DVD player, your 360, or your PS3, why would you need Wii to play DVD's? Most of those devices I just listed also have menu themes and can play music also. I admit, being able to change the menu theme would be nice, but it doesn't detract from the gaming quality. And being able to play your own music during gameplay is also a nice extra, but I as a gamer like to listen to the game's soundtrack (except during Excite Truck).

It's a current generation console, so it's in the console wars. The only way you might be able to say it's not competing with the other two is that it's beating them by too much. That doesn't mean it's the best console but that's a different topic.

So you are saying the Wii is a bad console because it can't play DVDs or MP3s, among other reasons. You can call me old-school, even though I am 18, but last time I checked videogames were supposed to play.... games. :o Shocking I know.

What you basically did was list the console's shortcomings and say that because of those the Wii doesn't deserve to be in the console wars. The thing is all consoles have issues, therefore as I see it no system is awesome enough to deserve the honor to take part on this entertaining war.

  • Wii has far worse graphics - Like many others have said, PS2 had worst graphics and look what happened.
  • Friend Codes - Annoying but hey it works.
  • Overall poor online (I.E. Brawl) - Brawl online sucked I'll give you that but Mario Kart and World at War have great online.
  • Almost no games have mic support - True but is that really a bad thing? I played PC games with voice chat and most of the time I wish there wasn't.
  • No DLC on anything but music games - The entire VC/Wiiware service is DLC. If you mean DLC on games, are there any other games that need DLC? Only genre I can think of is FPS for the maps and maybe racing games for more maps.
  • Horrible amount of memory (even with SD card) - 32GB SD card support begs to differ.
  • No achievements/trophies - Does it REALLY need this?
  • Only 420p support - I suppose this sucks.
  • Can not play DVDs - lawl
  • No MP3 support - lawl
  • No menu themes - lawl
  • Very few FPSs - Isn't that a GOOD thing?!
  • Poor power - Plug it into the right socket and it'll have enough power to run.

ColdP1zza

Um, how about because they like the wii better? Or is that too hard to understand? Not everyone likes COD4, Halo and Gran Turismo

Some people actually prefer games like SSBB, SMG and Zelda. Just because you dont like the games as much doesnt mean no one else will. Sure it doesnt look as good, and its online leaves something to be desired. The wii brings other great things to the table, such as:

Great Franchises (Zelda, SMG, metroid, Smash bros are all pedigree fanchises not available on enything else, + a lot more)
A Different control scheme - its not perfect, it doesnt work a lot of the time, but its different and people like trying something new, even if it doesnt work out the first time around. Some games have managed to pull it off, a lot of failed, but its fresh
Family Friendly - Console has a lot of titles designed for kids, allowing the parents play with their kids etc
Library of cl@ssic - Everything from Sega and Nintendo - great for old gamers
4 Player local gaming - Nintendo still the only one to do this - and its great when u have people round for a bbq etc

So open your mind a bit more and you might someday come to realise that people like different things. The wii is just as much a console as the 360 and ps3. I am glad its not like those two, what a boring Gen we would have with multiplats going on all 3 systems with preety much the same controls. Variety is not a bad thing, keeps people on their toes and thinking of new possabilities

No. The Wii needs at least some good FPS that show what the IR pointer is capable of, or else we're going to be stuck with dual-analog for a few more gens.

Yes, but it doesn't change the fact that the PS2 was the weakest last gen graphics wise. Both sold better than the others as well.

Is the Wii worth the price tag of $250.00 ? I doubt production cost is more than $50.00. For the price tag I would expect it to at least play a DVD.

You use facts, that's a good start. But then again the way you're using the facts is twisted so you can prove your opinion.

Wii can't play DVDs, that's a fact, but for YOU and probably ONLY YOU that does not make it a console, which is an opinion. So in the end, it's just an opinion.

Not only the Wii is competing against the PS3 (my favorite console this gen) and 360 but it's winning, handily at that.

The only thing that makes a gaming console a gaming console is the fact that it plays games.

Can the Wii do that? You know the answer.

Is the Wii worth the price tag of $250.00 ? I doubt production cost is more than $50.00. For the price tag I would expect it to at least play a DVD.

U reckon u can build the wii for $50? i dont think that cheap. But i dont understand the fascination for a DVD player. Its unnecessary feature. Why put it in if its not going to be used?

  • Very few FPSs - Isn't that a GOOD thing?!

No. The Wii needs at least some good FPS that show what the IR pointer is capable of, or else we're going to be stuck with dual-analog for a few more gens.

So you prefer to point at the screen while playing FPS?

Yes. It's much more intuitive than twiddling joysticks, and allows for greater accuracy.

I use my 360 as a dvd player. It's much better than the old one I had and it upscales DVDs. I am sure many people use their consoles as DVD players. It's better than having a clutter of devices at the entertainment center. YEs I think the Wii cost about $50 or less to produce. Leaving out DVD support was just another way for Nintendo to profit more on the overpriced console.

My take on this.

Jamex1987

A 32GB SD card is like $75.00 and up.

Then buy a smaller cheaper one? :? TC said storage sucked even with an SD card, I'm just letting him know that it can support 32GB SD cards now.

Let me ask you this. In real life, if a zombie was attacking you, would you rather point at it yourself, or move a stick to aim? I mean, if you like the challenge of using the stick I can sympathize with that I guess. But IR pointer makes aiming and shooting SO much more smooth and quick. Try playing RE4 on GC/PS2 and then on Wii. Popping those zombies in the knee is 2 times faster on the Wii.

You good sir, are wrong. If you would like to avoid wall of text, please skip to bottom. Now I have to agree with you from a financial stadpoint; the Wii has destroyed the 360 and obliterated the PS3 in sales, you don't even have to mention how much a marketing juggernaut it is. Its clearly the winner of the sales contest. As for the Wii itself, your argument is nearly entirely based on cosmetic differences and lack of a genre. We got along without achievements and trophies for quite some time now, why can't cool unlockables and personal satisfaction justify striving from the best, rather than have useless points and random goals do it for you? As for DVDs, its a game system, DVD players are fifty bucks. Get both for the price of a standard 360. Yes, DLC would be great, but that isn't so much the Wii's fault as it is lack of support. As for graphics, you seem to forget something the Wii excels at: art style. Whether its the cartoony vipe of Punch-Out!, Galaxy's gorgeous and unique planets, TLoZ: TP's wide open lush feilds and amazing architecture, MadWorld's blood-soaked graphic novel look, or even The Wind Waker played with BC, the Wii easily compensates for its lack of technical bells and whistles. Now with memory, I have never had a problem an Wii games seem to take up much less of it than a 360 or PS3 game would. Finally lack of FPSs? Kinda proves your a frantic shooter lusting maniac. Of course there is nothing wrong with that, because I am too (especially at system link parties), but I also deeply enjoy and appreciate other genres as well, and you would be wise in broadening your horizons. Your arguments are the fail

"Wii has far worse graphics"

PS2 had worse graphics last gen and looked what happened.

wasn't that big of a graphic gap between all three though

Try puttuing Halo and Red Faction side-by-side in HD.

Well unfortunatly u have no ida how much the wii costs, only nintendo do. so ur assumption is empty. However, you have a fair point. You as a consumer would prefer a DVD player and thats fair enough. If that was included though i think they would price it higher, so im happy for the current price point and being without a dvd player. A dvd player is useless to me, as we have several dedicated players already + PC's, PS2 etc

"The only game that would hold up as amazing on a 360/PS3 (graphics aside) would be Super Mario Galaxy." Nonsense. There are loads of good games on the Wii that are as good or better than anything on the other systems. Games like Zelda:TP, Metroid Prime 3, Zack and Wiki, World of Goo, Little King's Story, Punch Out!!, and Excitebots are as good as anything on any system. And the new golf and tennis games coming out with Wii Motion+ put the golf and tennis games on the other systems to shame (even though the same games are mostly on the other systems - like Tiger Woods 10). Once you've played golf/tennis with Motion+, dual analog just s*cks a%$.

Uh, yes! Pointing at the screen is a MUCH more realistic representation of the real thing than just twiddling your thumb on some stupid analog knob. Metroid Prime 3 and Medal of Honours: Heroes 2 have far better control than any dual analog FPS. And the upcoming Conduit is supposed to have great control too. Dual analog is terrible for certain types of games, including anything that involves quickly aiming at different parts of the screen. Twiddling your thumb so the crosshairs move across the screen is lame.

I kind of agree with the TC.

The Wii is pretty much in a league of it's own.
