Sony technically already had their cautionary tale when they transitioned from the PS2 to the PS3.

Wii's success had a lot to do with it's popularity among non gamers, it was a craze. And like all crazes, it fizzed out. Pogs, Rubiks Cube, whatever. Here today gone tomorrow.
And I've said it before I'll say it again, this did contribute greatly to the failure of the wii u. The Wii largely abandoned a lot of the gaming community in favour of casuals who enjoy mini game collections. When Nintendo no longer had these people, it was left in dire straits. Only the ultra die hards bought the wii u, probably fearing much the same. Small library, no third party, droughts of months at a time. How wrong they were. (LOL)
PS4 won on a gamer ticket. It gained huge momentum at an E3 where MS dropped the ball over it's always online system. It's not remotely the same. It's the most popular system with the most long term of the gaming community supporting it.
@killonsight: Wat? It has no resemblance to the Wii. The Wii was a phenomenon because Wii Sports was a genius title at selling waggle as a real input method.
You must be young or have a short memory. The Ps4 is more like the first two PlayStations. I think they have plenty of history to fall back on.
