The Witcher 3 Dev Says the Key With Sex Is to Not Sell Your Game on It

CD Projekt Red discusses sex in games and the challenges of developing for consoles.

With The Witcher series, developer CD Projekt Red has not shied away from the matter of sex, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be no exception. As long as developers are "tactful" about their handling of it, level designer Miles Tost says there's nothing wrong with including sex in a game.

"We make mature games for mature players (every Witcher game is for adults only), and sex is, well, a part of adult life," Tost said in an interview with PlayStation Lifestyle. "The key thing is not to overdo it, not to sell your game with sex. As long as you remain tactful in what you do, as long as you have a legitimate reason to put sex in your game, I think it's quite safe to do so."

CD Projekt Red told GameSpot earlier this year that Wild Hunt's sex scenes will not be interactive, unlike those in the God of War games. The non-interactive route is one also taken by games like Mass Effect, which presents sex in the form of a brief cutscene--though that didn't prevent it from proving to be controversial nonetheless.

Tost was also asked about the challenges of developing the console versions of Wild Hunt, which is coming to Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 in addition to PC. This is the Polish developer's second game to be released on consoles, the first being the Xbox 360 version of The Witcher 2. Wild Hunt is, however, its first game on a PlayStation system, and the first on current-gen consoles. Despite the major improvements Xbox One and PS4 offer over last-gen systems in terms of horsepower, Tost said, "A locked performance budget is one [challenge]--PCs, although I'm not saying this is a best practice, allow you to raise the bar in terms of visuals because you can always upgrade the hardware.

"It's different on consoles, as you have a fixed performance budget, you need to stick to. Also, there's a lot of [technical certification requirements] you need to meet to pass the certification process. We had to learn all that."

Following a delay announced earlier this year, Wild Hunt is now scheduled for release next February. CD Projekt Red has promised not to delay it again, and is showing off a 30-minute gameplay demo at San Diego Comic-Con this week. For more on Wild Hunt, check out our latest preview.

This is one of the reasons why I don't like The Wticher series or the ppl who claim it's only for smart ppl or some of that bullshit.

They think b/c it's got polygon boobs and the use of "arse" in it that it makes it mature....but in a more mature way.....an intellectual mature way. Hate to tell you....you've been deceived.

This is a load of PR crap. Just because sex is a thing in real life, doesn't mean it needs to be put into video games. They don't improve the gameplay at all if they aren't interactive, so i have no use for them.

Having sex scenes doesn't make your game "mature" for "mature gamers" either, lmao.

If the Witcher series had any shred of smoothness and flow to its gameplay, then i would start caring about the series. Oh well....maybe Witcher 4 will change this...

Actually their take on sex in the Witcher games is more intune with the middle ages along with everything else they even have natural wheat in the Wicher games. Unlike Dragon age that has GMO wheat and needs to be 21st century politically correct about everything encase some minority gets offended.

Only in the US is sex a problem. In Europe, people are more offended by gratuitous violence than normal sexual activity.

If people have a problem with sex in The Witcher games, I suggest you don't read the books cause The Witcher is a DARK MATURE FANTASY. Geralt is pretty much a bad ass man whore in the books and I wouldn't have it any other way in the games.

It does, actually. That is what Tost is trying to explain and that is why they are including it in the game in the first place. Same reason why a lot of HBO series have uncensored sex in them, because they don't need to restrain themselves from that kind of imagery; while at the same time, they want to include it because it's realistic. People have sex, just like how people kill other people, it's all part of life (hell killing people is not exactly part of life!).

Did you? If you're focusing on the sexual aspects of TW2 then you're doing it wrong.

^that line is nice and all, but get real. The witcher sex scenes are just as tacky and groan inducing as anything else. That game had fucking wench cards (which were fucking awesome on premise, but shhh). Sex is a part of adult life, it is however never presented (especially in videogames) in a manner that is tasteful.

Both Witcher games do not do sex right, out side the scene with Triss in TW2. It gets really stupid when sex is used as a quest reward throughout the game, and sex is something you earn as a reward, instead of a relationship developing. Whats really stupid is that Geralt can bang the same woman who turns Triss into a little figurine, nevermind Ves steps out of her character in her sex scene, after the act before talking about not cheating on Triss.

Say what you want about Bioware, but at least they do not have sex as a reward every other quest in every act of the game.

Sex is part of adult life, but just like everything else in life, it all takes place in context. Sex included in a game doesn't inherently all of a sudden make it a game for adults by default merely because of its presence. It'd be nice to have the option available to open up given the player's choices, but only be as important as it's relevant to what the game is going for, not just to be there for its own sake (which is how mostly all sexual material I've seen in all games seem to be).

There are many aspects of life in games that are 'adult'. To be all inclusive of these does not automatically make your game so. Context, context, context.

Or do it like Ride to Hell where they just keep their clothes on.

- Completely simplstic and cliche combat

- Traditional, but flawed boss battles

- Game £49.99 (almost double the price of a normal pc game)

Be nice if they sorted all this shit out before attempting to educate the industry.
