Optional second title: Halo gamers will love Mass Effect 2.

Polish website polygamia.pl has interviewed Heather Rabatich on Mass Effect (English version on the right). Quoting for the win:

I don't like the direction they're heading with ME2. I want ME2 to be more complex than ME and more RPG than action game. Also I hope they made more variations of weapons/armors because I felt like I was using the same weapon/armor every time, only with a different color (sure there were some models which had a slightly different look but still...). I do expect it to be better but... well, you get my point.

I agree I want it to be more complex and more RPG than action game. I will take the game however I can get it though, I loved the first one and want to enjoy more of the story.

Words cannot describe how hard I'm facepalming right now.

I guess it's the same why people hate on D&D games and turn-based strategy. Too "nerdy" and not casual enough.

Ugh, I was hoping they'd be strengthening the RPG elements in the game now that they've got the attention of shooter fans with the first game, but seems like they'll be taking it to the other direction. Nothing wrong with that either, but personally I was quite satisfied with the combat and would had just hoped for more choices, items, skills, side quests, ways to complete missions and that sort of stuff.

ME1 was already pretty light on the RPG mechanics. Looks like this is turning into Gears of War with a dialog system. Great.

If developers thought audiences were more sophisticated today, then we would have the same game design that was present on the PC platform towards the end of the 90s and early 2000's - high complex, design driven titles. Todays seem to be a blend of either highly unique titles, titles that blend very tired and true with quirks, titles that depend on a set design, and a focus on high production values to pad the title. How ironic. Not saying Mass Effect was not wonderful, but its complexities are not those of Baldur's Gate....

The first was already an action game with RPG elements so it isn't all surprising they are making it even more streamlined. Looks like I can safely skip this one until the price drops quite a bit.

garbage how?

Making the game more fps makes it more fluid and fun? no offense but first person shooters along the lines of halo and killzone are about as boring as it gets, and it gets REALLY repetitive. The side missions + the different abilities you can invest points in make the game a lot more interesting.
For example, my first playthrough took me 10 hours just doing the main story line playing as a soldier. I beat the game and really enjoy it but decided to try out vanguard which turns out to be 10 x better! This playthrough I'm actually doing every sidequest because the combat is WAY more enjoyable now that I have different unique abiltiies and it's even less of a shooter than it was my first playthrough. It's actually kind of strategic now.

And although it isn't magic per-se, there is a "type" of magic in mass effect known as biotics and it's probably the most fun element in the game. Throwing people never gets old.

I agree with the people who said more complexity would be better. Mass Effect is an easy game already. The side missions are very and the main story line takes like 9-10 hours. I would like more length + more rpg elements. different stat trees per c lass would be pretty cool, that way you can play through multiple times as the same c lass with different setups and have a bunch of other c lasses to play as well. If they made mass effect more like halo or killzone I think it would be a change for worse for people like myself, but a change for the better when it comes to sales + casuals buying it up.

If anything, this would make you think that gamers have become less and less sophisticated over time, trading good story for moar explosionz.

Ugh, hardly anyone I know likes rpgs; they'd rather be playing Call of Duty.

@ Some-Mist: Since when was ME an FPS? Just because it says its trying to feel like an fps for combat doesn't mean it is one. And I doubt there will be as much overhauling on the combat as some here would like to believe.

If a company that makes an RPG is afraid of putting of calling it an RPG because it might cause people to overlook it and claims this game is perfect for Halo fans, what does that tell you?

To me it says "the main focus in this game is combat and we'll sprinkle in a few RPG elements here and there." When I play an RPG, I like to have my stats have an effect on how I play. In ME1 I never felt my stats were of much importance because I rarely came across anything that required them. Most of it was just a slight and unnoticeable increase in damage or protection, rarely was anything else ever used in the game world. I suppose I wasn't able to open those hundreds of crashed probes on those barren lifeless planets but ultimately what was the point?

By the way, game genre has nothing to do with this conversation. Nice job missing the point.

So it's good for an RPG to have even more shallow RPG elements than its predecessor? And that this is coming from the very same company who made deep and complex RPGs of the previous generation. You might as well not even call it an RPG anymore. With the direction BioWare is taking this seems a lot more like a full-fledged action title. I'm not even going to bother getting the game on release anymore, and I feel like I wasted my time installing the original to get my character prepped for the second.

I am not going to complain that they are trying to refine the gameplay, LOL. Just because the game actually plays better, it does not mean that it will be any less of an RPG in other areas. "Oh NoEz, aN RPG cANnOt haVE goOd gaEmplaY." Come on, fellas.

It's probably because, by this gen's standards, that counts as a deep RPG. :(
