the difference there is that they aren't hooked on gaming there so it's not really an issue. Australia are an equal member of western culture but they have extremely high game prices as well as censorship. They can look across the ocean at a gaming paradise by comparison.

We still get almost every game though. The prices are an absolute pain, but it's easy to get around that.

I visited Egypt one time and they were a generation behind. I brought my PS2 and the lucky gamers there where just getting their hands on the PS1. They had pool halls with "arcades" and the arcade machines where just TVs hooked up to PS1s and you pay an hourly fee to play.

When I went to buy a game they were all bootlegs even in the big shopping malls.

Philippines, a third world country, gets all games NA gets too. It usually takes around 1 week, sometimes less, after NA release date before a game becomes available here. We get both NA versions and Asian versions (if there is such a version) of games. i also found a few European and Japanese games here like Bioshock EU version and Pokemon Japanese version. Piracy is rampant but there is a small market since there are people including me buying originals that's why we get to have a Gamestop-like store in our country called Datablitz. The prices are cheaper than Australia too. For NA versions, it's around $5-$10 increase from the original price in NA. For Asian versions, prices tend to be similar to those in Singapore which is the cheapest. For other versions, it's usually the most expensive. But life in the Philippines is tough because of low wages and strong piracy culture so only a few of the population support originals.

Even with the new rating introduced, Australia still has the most expensive games in the world. The games in Australia sell at higher figures than US prices, even though AUD is more valuable than USD nowadays.

you mean the pirates? why would any pirate care anyway? But if you're referring to those who buy originals yes they do care.

Afghanistan? Somalia?........Jebus213
These are correct. The two worst countries to live in is Somalia and Afghanistan, in that order. Dumbest article I've read in a long while.

So apart from the horribly war-town and extremely poor countries like Somalia, Zimbabwe, Congo, Afghanistan, Iraq, North Korea etc.. there are still another dozen countries where it is worse to be a gamer than Australia.. Namely Egypt, Brazil, Argentina, Vietnam, Philipenes etc you have entire nations that are a generation behind the western world + Japan.

Brazil got the PS2 in 2009 for christ sakes!

I would argue that it is worse to be a gamer in AUS than in Philippines when it comes to games. I'm referring to original stuff not pirated stuff. We get everything NA gets albeit a few days after NA release date. Same goes for the hardware. My sister bought my 3ds in Philippines around a week after 3ds launch date in US. Also, PSV was available here before the US. That was the JPN system. The price for games is a little bit higher than the original price in NA but it's still cheaper than AUS. I can also see some EU and JPN versions being sold for some games and since AUS market is regulated you can only find those versions in AUS through internet i presume. Not only do we get NA versions but also Asian versions as well, if there is such a version for the game, which is the cheapest version and it's usually the same as NA version. The problem is Philippines has low wages, terrible jobs, terrible cities, etc. It's a third world country after all. I'm lucky to be born in a middle class family.

I'm surprised the price of the games was a bit cheaper for the Kiwis. The price of PC hardware is ridiculous in NZ. Yes, we get a pretty rough deal in Aus, not only with gaming but all electronics. However, I'm sure there are countries worse off, with regards to gaming.

New releases on consoles are $100-$140 depending on the popularity of the title. HAlo 4 will probably be $120+ when it comes out. Only on PC can you find new releases at less than $100. EB was just greedy with Diablo 3

JB-HiFi sells their games at about $70-$90 which is chump change compared to most other stores in AUS.

I would live in Australia if I wasn't a gamer because the scenery is beautiful and the road population is low so Australia would be a dreamland for motorcycling!

However, as a gamer, that place would be nightmare. They also like banning violent games...

The article is very poorly researched and inflammatory. As an australian, I am biased, but I daresay that Australia is not the worst country in the world to game. Certainly out internet infrastructure is nowhere near as advanced as the U.S and definitely not as Korea's (blame a country as large as the U.S but with one tenth of the population), and prices are slightly higher, but there really isn't a great deal different about being an australian gamer to a gamer of the U.S Most major titles now release worldwide simulataneously (back in the PS1 days we had to wait months for games), game prices are generally only slightly more than the U.S (most games are around $70-$80 on release, less for PC, and that's in store - online is cheaper). When you couple in the import fees, and the U.S tax, games are really not the much more expensive in Australia. And then you have to factor in cost of living. The minimum wage in the U.S is about $7. In Australia, it's over $10. So it comes out to being pretty much equal there. And lastly, censorship. You should note that of the thousands of games released in Australia, very few are denied, and even less are censored. And even that is changing (plus, most gamers import anyway). Factoring in the realities versus the hype, Australia is a good country to game in.

On a standpoint of racism, equality and entertainment.
