Halo pretty much sold the original XBOX by itself, and I have never seen a gaming craze and hype like is going on right now for Halo 3. It was on the cover of Time magazine! Grand Theft Auto 3 helped move PS2 into the position that made it ultimately win (I personally bought a PS2 back in the day only to play GTA3). The next GTA will likely be a big event, and will sell like crazy. Gran Turismo, to a lesser extent, is also a system seller, but I imagine that upon release there will be less of an impact on the gaming community like Halo has and GTA probably will. When Mario releases on Wii, I imagine that it will sell well too, but there will not be much mainstream media hype. And Pokemon somehow manages to sell like crazy. These games make people BUY systems. IMO these are the only legit system sellers.

Final Fantasy and MGS are great, and they sell a lot, but don't expect even a fraction of the craze when they are released as you see right now with Halo 3 (I keep seeing people here say that MGS will sell like Halo 3- no way).

I keep seeing arguments like yours here on SW. MGS sells well, yes. However, most of my friends who own consoles either have never heard of it, or could care less about it. And I know a lot of people who own video games. They do care about Madden, NBA games, GTA, Halo, and maybe Mario, but MGS is not a factor for most people I know. MGS sells really well among its fans, but again it is a niche title that just happens to sell more copies than most. Outside of SW, there is almost no one who will buy a $600 PS3 just to play MGS. Also, another reason that Halo sells so well is that it is a social event- people get together to play Halo (like Madden), and it is a fun experience with friends, unlike MGS. It just will not compare to Halo 3.

read the rest of my post im drawing a comparison to the state of gaming libraries not to the actual games themselves.

Halo was a launch title.

EDIT: So you're saying Halo sold so much because there was nothing else? That's stupid, if there wasn't anything else nobody would have bought the XBOX.

in comparison to the ps2 library? there was pretty much nothing else and look at the xbox sales in comparison to ps2 sales.... now this gen things have reversed 360 is the one with the huge gaming library, halo is selling well because now its an established franchise and this gen i expect mgs to sell even better than it did on ps2/ps1 because of the lack of quality software on the ps3.

You do realize that FF is the 4th best selling franchise of all time? Yes, there have been more FF games than Halo, but FF7 alone sold better than Halo 1 or 2. I'm not saying Halo is not a system seller, but there are a lot more system selling games than just Mario, pokemon (1st and 2nd best selling franchises) GT, GTA and Halo (which was 40th, prior to H3's release). FF have always sold systems. Metroid sells systems, and Zelda. MGS sells systems. RE was a system seller before it went all multiplat. It's still a system seller, just not limited to one system. There are something like 50-60 video games franchises that have sold over 10 million units. Any one of them can justifiably be called a system seller. Actually, for that matter, any individual game that sells more than 1 or 2 million is a system seller, as chances are out of that 1 or 2 million there are a lot of people who buy the system just for that one game.

Lack of quality? You gave these scores

Heavenly Sword (PS3)8.5S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl (PC)9.0Supreme Commander (PC)8.5Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars (PC)9.0Virtua Fighter 5 (PS3)8.5BioShock (PC)9.5Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 (PS3)9.0MLB 07: The Show (PS3)8.5Ninja Gaiden Sigma (PS3)9.5The Darkness (PS3)9.0

It has 3 AAA and 3 high AA, that's not so bad after less than a year...

Yeah, I know that Final Fantasy has sold a ton. But my biggest complaint is that the biggest selling one (FF7) was like 10 years ago. Also, when you have 12 main FF games, plus COUNTLESS spinoffs and remakes, you are bound to have huge sales. My definition of a true system seller is what you see right now with Halo 3- lines at the store of people buying the game + the system.

Gears sold alot of 360s, So is Zelda. So is Final Fantasy.

I think killer apps and system sellers are 2 things. The killer apps are the hype train games that have monster day 1/week1 sales.

Likee Halo, GTA, Mario,Pokemon

Then there are system sellers that put up great numbers over a good period of time
MGS,Final Fantasy, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Gran Turismo.

I think any game that can sell 3 million units worldwide on any system at any time is a system seller. I think you are just picking out some of the top tier games and forgetting the rest.

Gears of War , Wii Sports , and Zelda TP are systems sellers for their respective platforms so far and obviously Halo 3 will be the next one.

Actually, Final Fantasy and MGS are far bigger system sellers than GTA and Gran Turismo. So is Zelda. Many people bought a Wii for that version of Twilight Princess, and Ocarina of Time was a major selling point for the N64 as well. And Final Fantasy 7 paved the way for the PS1 to be winning console of it's generation, which Metal Gear Solid also played a major role in that.

GTA and Gran Turismo are large sellers, but they don't have nearly the influence on which console people will buy as FF, MGS, and Zelda.

However, I predict GTA and Resident Evil will become system sellers. Already Resident Evil 4 could be held responsible for part of the Gamecube's success.

Gran Turismo will probably just stay forever a really good selling racing game, unless somehow they become really popular.

IMO the system sellers are halo, gt, ff, and mario. Mario is easily the biggest console mover, biggest fanbase and appeals to casuals of all ages more so than the others

You left out Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid.

But yes, the ones you mentioned are system sellers (Mario platfomers, and Pokemon handheld RPGs only).

I knew I'd eventually get an Xbox when I learned that Shenmue II and a new Jet Set Radio game were landing on it.

he next GTA will likely be a big event, and will sell like crazy. Gran Turismo, to a lesser extent, is also a system seller, but I imagine that upon release there will be less of an impact on the gaming community like Halo has and GTA probably will.

I personally think GT5 will outsell both GTAIV and Halo 3. And with a significant difference too. A few million, not just 1 or 2.

I'm not gonna guess it will be the best selling game of the gen though, cause Nintendo could bring out something like Nintendogs for Wii and cause a sales storm.

[QUOTE="mmirza23"] mgs is in the same boat as halo was on the xbox.nyoroism
Whaaa?

Mgs is a fan game. It's the kind of game that FANS like. Like me, a fan. Halo is the kind of game, "That guy" likes. Anybody. Just like Film, a movie like Reservoir Dogs had more of a fan following(Later it became very mainstream) where as a movie like Spider Man has an, "Everybody" following.

I agree with the first post, but I would also put in Zelda, Final Fantasy and to a lesser extent Metal Gear Solid
