If anything, both of those games have a far more crisp, 'dry' look to them....except when there is an environment with water, lol. Either way, I know what appeals to me personally, and what does not. As for the graphics topic, I think Mirror's Edge gets ignored. I thought it looked fantastic just from the demo and easily rivals Gears 2.

I'll agree with you that when it is used efficiently, it can look great, and Gears 2 is no exception. It is indeed a good looking game. Still though, Gears drips with that core UE wet, plastic, shiny look that is just getting a bit old for me, personally. Mainly due to capabilities of such engines as I mentioned previously in my last reply. What is appealing is all in the eye of the beholder though, I suppose.ironcreed

I'm guessing that's natural, though. The armor in Gears 2 is metal, so it's gonna have a shine to it. And things are gonna look wet in a lot of areas that involve rain or water. Actually, that level inside the worm has some very nice detail. The whole level is wet and bloody, and they took the extra step to make Marcus have a wet bandana. It goes along with the situation they're in, usually, so I don't get the shiny/wet complaint. Now, PDZ was a game that had wet textures in odd places.

I won't lie. I've had a long on and off battle with the engine, but I've realized that it's a great engine when used properly. There are a ton of games that look and run really bad on it, but that's the developers fault, I'm thinking. I used to think it was the engines fault, but I've been seeing a lot of games that use it just fine. Mirror's Edge is a game that's not from Epic, and it really shows what the engine is capable of. Not everything has to be grey and brown, or run like a crippled dog.

Yup. PDZ has walls that were insanely wet and shiny looking, kinda like they've been caked with vaseline. And they weren't around any water, so it didn't look right.
