So, SW, what do you think aren't needed in games?

For me, it's adventure modes in fighting games.

The two examples I have with this are with Mortal Kombat and Naruto. Last year when I got my PS2, I played a whole BUNCH of fighting games, three of them being Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja 4, Mortal Kombat: Deception, and Mortal Kombat: Armageddon (I mentioned these specifically because they have adventure modes. I played a bit more fighting games last year) and while I thought the fighting games themselves were fun (even though Naruto was the lowest I played then in comparison to Mortal Kombat), the adventures were not. They'll either have dull combat (UN4 and Armageddon are the main culprits there) or just not make exploring the storylines as fun as they should be.

I thought Mortal Kombat's adventure modes were at least better than UN4's but I'm not saying a lot as all three games adventure modes have enough problems to not be that good.

What do you think?

*EDITED for clarification. Sorry guys, it's still early in the morning over where I am right now.

I don't know.

They should just have a melee button instead of first selecting the melee weapon.

Prepare for 99% of answers to be multiplayer...I agree, but I don't think it should immediately be the reaction to any series getting multiplayer either.

One thing most games don't need is difficulty levels. They usually don't work very well because the devs just make you take fewer hits instead of trying to make each mode a fair challenge. Either put more work into each difficulty, or have just one and spend that time making it more balanced.

I would love for the day that each game comes with optional tutorials, seriously. I hate when games force you through boring tutorials as if you have never played the genre before or as if the game is complicated. At least ask players if they'd like to do a tutorial.

YES, and that includes "tutorial levels" that are only there to teach you how to play the game. Especially Pokemon needs this, because I always try to play the older Pokemon games and get bored after about 5 hours of running errands for Professor Oak.

That's honestly one big reason why I have a hard time getting into Pokemon nowadays.

I second this. Im almost done with Dead Space 2.. and while playing it, I've realized... having to actually KEEP TRACK AND MANAGE MY HEALTH IS A GOOD THING. Demon's Souls, MGS, and Dead space 1 and 2 are the only "high calibur" games games from this gen i can think of off the top of my head that didn't have constantly regenerating health.

Open world sandbox games that have no business being so. Just because you're making an action/adventure game, it doesn't mean you need to create vast spans of empty terrain with nothing to do in them but run time trials and collect the 2000 coins/briefcases/crystals/flags/arbitrary item that has nothing to do with anything.

Omg this, It should be standard for a game with great cutscenes to have a theatre/gallery hell even Resident Evil 5 had one and it's cutscenes were mostly filled with dudes turning into...things.

I think most shootersdon't require a 'melee' attack that would be infinitely more powerful then a bullet, though I don't mind what Killzone 3 has done with the snapping of the necks, or gears with it's chainsaw-ry goodness.

Well I know Nintendo needsto start adding difficulty options in their games because they are starting to get too easy. They give the option of having the game play itself why not give the option to make the game harder?

I regret to inform you that you are wrong :( I have seen it be used in action adventures, platformers, puzzles and RPGs.

Brutal Legend, Mirrors Edge, Portal and Dragon Age: Origins. Granted in Dragon Age Origins, you did not regenerate in combat... thankfully, however you still regenerated at a huge pace outside combat, so much that I could easily go overkill in every battle.

Motion controls. Yes, I went there.

I agree with adventure modes in fighters. I love Tekken & decided to 1000/1000 Tekken 6. The scenario mode was a nightmare. I also hated MK: Deception, but it's adventure mode was much better, gameplay wise, than Tekken simply because the fighting was actually fighter gameplay. Tekken 6s scenario mode was some weird, God Hand-esque monster.

The reason I disliked MK: D so much was because I hate the MK universe (Not that Tekken is much better in that regard). I haven't played Naruto:UN4, but if its adventure mode is like MK: D, I think I'd enjoy it because I love the Naruto universe. I have UNS2 but haven't played the adventure mode yet. While I'm talking about fighters, I think they should all have something like Tekken's Ghost Mode. Makes single player offline play so much more fun.

A list of some other things that aren't needed in some games (much of what has been said in this thread already):

  • Multiplayer & multiplayer achievements/trophies in games with boring multiplayer that shouldn't even be there in the first place.. Especially when a few months down the line those type of games will be a ghost town online because the don't compare to dedicated multiplayer games.
  • Unskippable cutscenes
  • Long death animations/scenes in games that involve dieing often (Super Meat Boy was perfect in this regard).
  • Long battle introductions in jRPGs. I love Lost Odyssey, but good lord... The introductions were as long as some of the fights. Boss battles I can understand.

Just a few I can think of.

Multiplayer where it isn't needed, I am looking at you Bioshock 2.

Some other people mentioned this too, and it is respawning enemies and unskippable cutscenes.

The way SMB handles death is brilliant. Right down to how the music keeps going as you die. There are a lot of games that would be way better if they took that approach.

DIALOGUE OPTIONS. Be good, evil, be neutral. Be with that character, be this one, be with the other one. If used correctly is good, but some games are overdoing it like a freakign gimmick. Eg: mass effect.

I agree with this. The end boss was just lame.Run around, wait for moment, shoot. Also dodge the 50 grenades that are being thrown from time to time. UC1's "boss" was way better.

The game is only incomplete if it feels incomplete. There's no set amount of content a game needs to be "complete".

Lazarevic wasn't good either, but at least you fought him, instead of killing stupid waves of minions while praying he wouldn't headshot you with his ridiculously fast and perfectly accurate aim....

Of course, I did play on Hard, but it would have been a boring fight if not a frustrating one.

Perks.

They make the game more about the Have vs Have nots when it should be about pure skill. Cosmetic stuff is fine but when you add perks and upgrades it breaks the MP I think.

Difficulty Settings - It's fine in most games, but there's something about a set difficulty setting that I love. Maybe it's because somebody can't ****y their way out by playing on easy and they have to play the game like everyone else.

Galaxy 2 and New Super Mario Bros. Wii are suppose to be harder.

That is why Nintendo came up with Super Guide (or whatever they call it because it is different in every game).

Those games that have "Super Guide" are harder because the guide allows the developer to make the game harder without alienating people because if you die 8 times the guide appears and asks you if you want the guide to show you how to complete the level.

Just because I think someone should play the game on the difficulty setting the game was created around does not mean I care if they do. If I cared I wouldn't say it's fine in most games, nor would I post it under a topic called "things you think *some* games don't need and why".

I just think some games that strive to be difficult shouldn't have a easy setting so someone can't easily breeze through the game.

There is a a time and place for everything, and for everything there is a time and place where it isnt suitable. As a result my answer would probably be anything.

However, just to contribute
Multiplayer: Lets tack on an completely unnecessary multiplayer for System Shock 2, Metroid Prime 2 ect.
World Tendancy: Made getting several items in demons souls a royal pain, I had to turn off internet to obtain a whole lot of weapons simply because some worlds would never reach pure white, and I NEVER died.
Excessive Check points: you know a check point after every fight death is just a minor annoyance. Nothing I try to avoid like the plague anymore. Beating a level isnt as satisfying as it used to be.

New Super Mario Bros Wii could be pretty darn difficult at times, especially if you had 3 friends hellbent on murdering you. Galaxy 2 was pretty hard when you were trying to get every star in the game, the path to Bowser was not that difficult, but some stars were a pain to get.

I am glad Nintendo has a Super Guide, because it lets people who are having trouble with one part just skip it and go to the next part. Especially as it does indeed allow Nintendo to make their games harder without alienating anyone. I also remember people who used the super guide in Galaxy 2 getting a bronze star instead of a gold star, which encouraged them to try again.

I am also for difficulties, that way people who just want to breeze through the game just to see the story can and people that want to be challanged like me can. With that said, I find Difficulty settings like "Easy, Normal, Hard, Insane" to be a bit obsolete, especially with a far superior difficulty setting system found in games like Tropico.

Things games DON'T need: Overpriced DLC and map packs. Things games DO need: Custom mappable controls on consoles. Why does every game have to have presets? Why can't we just map the controls to our liking like on the PC?

Insta-Knife. I miss where you actually had to pull out your knife and stab someone with it.

Where to begin?

Multiplayer - Basically if its not a shooter or sports game, it probably doesn't need multiplayer. See Assassins creed. Please god no multiplayer in Mass Effect 3.

Guns, armour etc. as DLC - Hide stuff away in the game by all means. Ask a player to complete some impossible achievement for a new outfit but don't charge money just for a new sniper rifle and a helmet. Does anyone actually buy this stuff? Additional missions are slightly different and are sometimes justified but not often.

Cut scenes in an FPS - who here seriously cares about the plot in an FPS?

Facebook, social networking integration - I'm not on Facebook. If I was, who would give a flying fig what score I got on Cut the Rope?

Tricks in FIFA - how many times do you watch a football match and see someone do a 360 spin on the ball. I've seen it about twice in my whole life I think. FIFA is full of people doing them. Emile Heskey got past one of my defenders the other day doing one. Emile Heskey! Also on a related point...

EA yearly updates - a new roster/ squad members can be handled by DLC, or a new release at a reduced price (like Super Street Fighter IV) but not a new full price game. If you don't buy it, multiplayer on the old game dies so you're screwed.

That'll do for now. Might pop back later.
