I can't help it, every time i play a new game i always think yea good but somehow lifeless! What is wrong with this gen or is it me? I mean iv'e been a gamer since around 1980 and year on year gaming has always got more exciting for me but just recently i feel disconnected. An example would be Mass effect 2, amazing reviews etc etc yet i play it and think god this is has no soul?!?! So i might get myself a PS2 off Ebay and a copy of ICO (never played it but looks cool) anyone else share my weird regressive thought here?

I agree, i think because most games this gen has a mediocre story, theres been plenty of similar threads but some people are still in denial, most games nowadays focus too much on graphics and online multiplayer and how theyre gonna hype it, theres only a few games this gen that has a 'soul', like mgs4, demon's souls, red dead rdemption and valkyria chronicles

So you would rather play games with no back story, go point a to point b and pretty much can be beaten in an hour.

I love this gen compared to any other, there are gems in previous gens but saying this gen feels empty when the nes era had what?, that was an empty gen.

Could it be that whilst games are looking and feeling more like the real world they inturn offer less escapism which is at the root of a good game afterall.

I kind of agree with you. I think it's mainly because these days, video games are basically 5 hour cakewalks, and the multiplayer portions are all just clones of each other. There are only a few games that were genuinely challenging.

Im still waiting for this gens KOTOR I like ME2 alot and I think it's a great game yet I cant help but sometimes feel it's kind of bleh, then other times it's all kinds of awesome, KOTOR on the other hand was awesome no matter how many times you played it or for how long, and no TOR will not be this gens KOTOR.

I don't know what you're lacking in this generation that you had in previous ones. If you're not satisfied with the current crop of big-budget console games, why don't you look into pc gaming or maybe some indie games? Check out World of Goo or Braid. There's plenty of more casual flash games that seem to offer whatever it was that older generations had.

I did say year on year games had got better for me 'til this gen and i can't help but draw comparisons generations for example tomb raider then and now and note the lack of exploration has been replaced with nice graphics or resi 5 again nicer gfx but not a patch on the 'feel' of resi 4 and previous.

The problem with mass effect, is everything except the dialogue/story/cutcense, its gameplay is challengless and unisinpiring, something I often fault Bioware for... I felt the same with Dragon Age. Thier own attempts at a gameplay system have been mediocre, they were better off with D&D despite trying to mimic it, and thier MMO just looks like a godamn WoW clone with star wars slapped over the top. I treat bioware alot like say .. Kojima, I liek to mock them for making good "Interactive Movies", while I dont mean it literrally I feel that outside of the above they make souless mechancs and gameplay concepts.

I just think there's less risk taking cuz games need a hefty return. But there are still a good number of classic games, the list above by a former poster is pretty good, I would add AC2, and GTA4. And there are challenging games, if you play on hard. DL games on PSN and Live are quite different.

Metal gear solid for PS1 was new and fresh, on PS2 it was reborn looking and feeling different yet on PS3 its the same as the ps2 one but nicer gfx. Where's this gens Psychonauts, beyond good and evil, ico We don't even get a quality silent hill!

I'll agree this gen isn't blooming and creative as the PS2 days, but so far I've only been disappointed in a handful of games (granted, I don't buy a lot of games, just the extremely awesome ones :P).

I kinda get that feeling sometimes.

Possible reasons:
This gen the games are very cinematic and story driven, and have very good graphics. And if you compare a video game to a movie in terms of cinematic experiences and how the story is delivered, movies tend to do it better than video games. Furthermore, since games are story and cinematically focused (nowadays), there is less gameplay implementation or inspiration. Also another reason could be that since the graphics are trying to be so real, it just feels so hollow compared to real life, while if the graphics weren't so intense, it's obviously a game and we don't draw that comparison (subconsciously).

Bundle those reasons together and you've got some empty feeling games.

Another reason:
You're getting older and don't care for games as much.

Well you could say its just you but that goes with out saying because we can't all like the exact same things, Im loving this gen myself and I think all 4 main platforms are well worth owning but if they aren't doing it for you by all means catch up on gems you missed.

On the subject of Ico it is an amazing game an all time great imo, SotC is also worth checking out and I believe they will have something out on the PS3 soon (I don't know what sorry) so worth keeping in mind ;). Lost in shadows is looking nice aswell if you own a Wii, infact that might not be a bad console for you seeing as it has the virtual console and some refreshing titles regardless of what people claim here (its not inundated with shooters you see).

I do own a Wii and thank god for that because if all i had was the XB360 i would of thrown the towel in totally on this gen. Mario Galaxy is a quality game make no mistake and i do like Metroid,Twilight princess etc etc and others but i suppose this highlights the point further in that the Wii is essentially a gamecube so when multiformat games are released they don't come to Wii so it makes its own way, mostly utter rubbish but some gems in there and maybe its this that makes gaming interesting, the trial and error of a developer willing to give it a go. Who dares develop a game on ps3 or XB360 with a huge budget without at least assuming the public would like it?

Case and massive point - No more heroes!!! This game is FRESH! killer 7 is at its roots but i doubt this would of led to No more heroes if the Wii didn't exsist.

I also have to double agree on this, and also agree on Heavy Rain being one of those "special" games (not to sure about the rest)

I really think this gen is just over-saturated. Video gaming has become so mainstream that the over all value of it has gone down. You can't please "gamers" anymore, you have to please what sells now. Thats exactly what we are seeing this gen, "what will get the most people to buy this game."

This is why we have countless copys of the same game, gameplay and story, as opposed to the past generations. and this is why so many of the younger gamers are ok with that (not to say they should not be). I must say that it is a shame, a shame that many of my personal favorite series have lost their special spark.

OP is right the magic is definetly missing

Like I enjoyed Halo 1 and Fable 1 but when i was playing the 360 version of halo 3 an fable 2 something was definetly lacking

for one thing fable 2 was garbage i hate the gun's and the dog an prefered the mideval sword type stuff in the first one and also i hate how u cant even die in the game its a friggin joke u fall down the combat was much better in the first one an im sick of people claiming its just a big upgrade over the first one NO ITS NOT an upgrade fable 2 is crap an is downgrade for me

also halo 3 the graphics this gen aren't as epic as people are claiming tbh Halo 2 looked nearly just as good as halo 3 not that i played much halo 2 i had enough halo after the first one

im just sick of all these rehashes that aren't even fun I mean heres some games i thought were worst then previous gen Final Fantasy 13(FFX is flat out better an suprisingly less linear then this trash)/Fable 2(Fablo 1 was fine how it was)/Perfect Dark Zero(this game stunk i dont know how it score so high it was garbage compared to perfect dark)/Super Mario Galaxy(super mario 64 was the last mario game that was good IMO)/Assassin Creed(this game sucks this is not as fun as old school gaming)/Mass Effect (awful played it bored me to death its just some fake 360 rpg tryin to be a shooter)/Starcraft 2(not nearly as good as the first one and neither is battle.net 2.0

this gen is full of turds if u actually play the hype games this gen like biohock/assassin creed i mean really play these games there just not fun at all bioshock is one of the lamest shooters ive ever played an creed is boring and its just not interesting at al these are the games pplwere saying OMG awesome an go to like gamestop an ign they all rate these things like 9 or 10's its like ARE U KIDDIN ME? did u play any ps2 games or ps1 games? This gen does suck seriously the standards are so bad now

the one dude was right the only game with any passion in it thats fun to play as a ps2 game would be Metal Gear Solid 4 for the ps3 konami is the only ones who know what their doing

of course theres a few more games out there, all Im saying is I wish developers would put an effort on the story as much as they do on graphics, dlc, how much they're going to milk it and hyping it through internet, they'll be surprise on how much a good story will affect the reviewers opinion

yes, most of my favorite series last gen kinda dissapoint me a bit this gen aswell, and I hope people wouldnt just blame it on nostalgia because it really isnt, I replayed castlevania sotn, crash bandicot series, god of war collection, old RE etc. and it still gave me the same good feeling when I finished the game before

This Gen became a cash cow. The Wii exploded and was like a monster of causualness. We had Rock Back/ Guitar hero constantly ramming their aimless games down the gaming communties throats. We have had the COD series every year. The PC has lost all lime light in the main media for producing any big block buster selling games. PC has essentially become a way to play the consoles games with better graphics. Classic series like CnC has fallen same goes for battlefield. Starcraft 2 has only just come out so who knows how long that will last, i doubt very long tbh. Just seems alot of the big selling games are either sequals or un original ideas.

That is only Guitar Hero. Because unlike Guitar Hero Harmonix only creates a sequel when they can't add something to the game using Downloadable Content. With Guitar Hero Activision just makes a sequel when all they have to do is just release DLC because they mainly just make a new game with new songs. Rock Band actually adds stuff like in Rock Band 2 they added I'm not sure.

The Beatles Rock Band changed the visuals and added 3 part Vocal Harmonies.

I'm not sure about Green Day Rock Band because I'm not interested in it.

Rock Band 3 adds Keyboards, Pro Mode, Full Band mode were you can have 3 Singers, 1 Guitarists, 1 Bass Player, 1 Keyboard Player, and 1 Drummer at the same time.

They also changed the menus so you can sort the songs by game because if you only want to play songs from Rock Band or Rock Band 2 you can sort it and they also have were you give the song a rating and if you don't like it you give it a bad rating you never have to play it when you choose random playlist.

This generation lacks variety. Two of the biggest genres are really underrepresented; survival-horror and JRPG (and solid WRPG for that matter). We just have a deluge of shooters and hybrid games.

A lot of the games are kinda giving me the "been there done that" feeling. But despite that there are still 3 or 4 games every year that really impress me. And when I really think about it that's pretty much how its always been, people just tend to remember the best and forget the rest. After a while it starts to feel like all those great games last gen came out in a single day, when in truth they were streched over a long period.

I disagree, I wonder if last gen is being looked at through rose tinted glasses, because imo this gen seems better in everyway. Except maybe less JRPGs (don't jump on me for that I have no facts, just going by what some seem to say on SWs) :P.

Yeah, a lot of mainstream games feel like there is no passion put into them this generation.

People have far too much nostalgia for video games. This has been my favorite gen because there are much less linear and restricting games then previous years.

I think, what with the huge graphical advances, it may be the uncanny valley effect as much as anything else.
