console - $400
22 inch monitor to play with a nice picture (dont even think about an HD TV  ) - $250
the 2-4 games that you want badly- $200 ish
how long those games last? - luckily over a month

$850 just to start enjoying this gen -- give or take $100-200 if your on 360 or Wii.

the handheld scene is sure looking good now 0_o.

Gaming has never been cheap unless you go for older generations of systems/games.

Flashback to 1993 when the Neo-Geo was about $600 and 3D0 launched at $700+.

Console prices are actually getting better.

^ theres a reason the neo geo home system didn't continue and its due mainly in part to its ridiculous startup cost. im sure the 3D0 failed for a number of reasons, one being awful third party support and the other being the insane price tag. Next gen (whenever it is) the console manufacturers need to look to lower pricing. the SNES was $199 when it first came out and that was considered really expensive for its time ($200 to me is still a lot of money and i actually make a decent check)

Yeah I can agree that both of those systems were Epic Fails.

ha you kidding me.

I spent $1300 on consoles, $2000 on a HDTV,  $1000 in Surround Sound, and another $2000 on a stand that would fit all that stuff.

I know it's not just the consumer as well. I don't want to get into a PS3 and Xbox 360 flame war. But with the economy not doing so well, and the development cost of these games being much higher, it's no wonder you see some of thes exclusive games going multi-platform. The announcement of FFXIII going to the 360 was much of a suprise, but at the sametime it feels so predictable when you look back at Square Enix. There last fiscal year kind of hit them hard, and Wada then said he didn't want anyone focusing on new franchises. Rather the developments keeping ideas open for Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, KH, etc. Also, if you were a big follower of the SE games released in the past few years, when reading a interview about......Crisis Core for example. The interview always contained a question about how Final Fantasy XIII was going. There was 3 responses:

1. It's doing fairly well, and we're working on it very hard.

2. It's still exclusive to the PS3.

3. We can do wonders with the hardware we have, but it takes a bit more to produce something.

The weird thing is that it's all 3 answers in the same interview. :P

moeny is what is holding me back from getting a PS3, especially with the way athe economy is. I'm only 18, half of my paycheck goes towards savings for college (usually $200-$250). Then I spend a good $20-$30 per week on gas. After food and other odds and ends (bills, cell phone, ect.) I'm lucky to have close to $50, on a GOOD week. Understand that I'm a pretty frugal person. I'm rarely go to the theaters, I think twice about buying anything over $20. I am really trying to save up for a PS3, I really want it. But making $8/hr as a part time grocery store stocker dosn't give me a ton of spending money. At least I have my own PSP and the family Wii.

Well, we had a high entry point this time around. (PS3 launching at 599...) How companies will cut production cost effectively and timely and pass them to the consumers is paramount in this gen. I believe that well see less than $200 at the end of this gen (compleate consoles, not barebones).

Even though I'm not much of a PC gamer anymore, I've noticed I've gotten the most value out of PC games through my gaming life. Most Pc games I owned, I played for more than a year.

no joke, i honestly can't afford to game anymore

whether i'm sacrificing money or my own time, moving out doesn't help but neither does my 360 dying.. were consoles this faulty in the past? my gf's dad ps3 is also broken and being sent to sony atm

competition doesn't always benefit the consumer.. maybe on paper it does but in the execution we get a whole mess of rushed products

I notice PC gaming seems to be getting more affordable, I am seriously considering going back to just PC gaming after this gen but we shall see (if I set up a decent PC I will have no cash for consoles, although my HDTV cost me more than a PC this gen :?).

Yeah, same here. Actually the worst part is that most of today's games are SHORT and EXPENSIVE.

Tips:

1. Look for sales many Circuit City are closing all games are 15% off.... I have bought so many games because of this.

2. Try never to buy a game when it is new most 3rd party games drop in price after about 6 months.

3. Always check out clearance games...Kmart can have amazing deals on games like this. When doing this always check out the trade value at Gamestop. A number of times you can pick up a game cheaper and trade it to Gamestop for a higher amount.

If you can't afford to stay on the cutting edge then just go back and play games from previous generations; I mean, you can't honestly tell me that you've played everything worth playing up until the present.

I'd say that about half of the games I play are games from previous gens, just because there is so much good stuff out there. Searching through bargain bins and looking for online deals can lead to you playing some ****ing awful stuff, but sometimes you find a gem in the rough. Earlier this year I picked up a PC game from 2001 called Arcanum, and it's just an absolutely excellent RPG that I would have never run across if I was fully focused on buying and playing new games.

I could list you dozens upon dozens of console games from the last generation alone that you absolutely need to play (many of which you probably haven't touched). You could buy them on the cheap and enjoy them on an SDTV. There are also dozens of older PC games that you could almost certainly run, assuming your rig isn't a complete relic. The majority of the games installed on my PC right now are 5+ years old.

You got plenty of options, man.
