This generation of consoles are just embarrassingly bad.

Every frigging game is broken, requires patches to work out of the gate and struggles to get 1080/30. Meanwhile on Digital Foundry a Core i3 PC with a 750ti that you can build for the price of these consoles, out performs them. On top of that they put in a slow arse 2.5 HDD and everything takes all year to load, I swear they have problems streaming content in, they cannot even do two things at once without bogging down because of that crap HDD.

How the hell did we get to this point where the consoles launched way behind the PC and are so dated that we're already thinking about new ones?

It's not just the hardware either, the UIs are so bad on both consoles, the download speeds are so slow, I can get 35MBps on Steam and download 50GB games so fast. With the PS4 and Xbox One if you buy anything digitally, you know you're not playing it until the next day, that's if the download hasn't stopped for whatever reason when the console is in rest mode.

Then you have the price of the digital games, I got Fallout 4 for £30 on PC, on the PS4 it's £50 and that is a generous price, usually you can go on there and the prices are £60 odd and £20 more than retail. On top of that retail prices drop very fast, digital prices stay the same all year, then they give you a sale where they're still more expensive than retail and act like it's a good deal. Meanwhile over on Steam there are sales galore and I'm buying everything for a fraction of the price of the consoles. People say PC gaming is so expensive... my PC cost me £500 to make in 2012 and it's still maxing everything out at 1080p 60 and beating the consoles by miles. I haven't had to pay a subscription to play online, games are cheap, I've probably saved more money than my PC cost on games and no sub alone...

I just think these consoles are dated in more ways than just the hardware and games are increasingly more and more broken. On top of that we're still not given the freedom we should expect like what we get on the PC or even phones and tablets. Why don't we have apps yet? Why can't we choose third party software that does a better job than the crap Microsoft and Sony give us? Why can't I do simple things like use an SD card to save games in real time on the PS4? Why can't I change FoV or remap the controls to what I want exactly?

People were worried about Nintendo, I think they'll outlive both Sony and Microsoft int he console space. I look at the PS4 and the Xbox One and I'm done with them already, they're so dated I'm just using my PC 100%. That never used to be the case, in the old days consoles would be 2/3 years ahead, they launched 2/3 years behind this time and it shows.

Seriously. You're done ?

Do you play games for games or graphics ?

I want to play Bloodborne. I want to play Halo 5. I want to play Quantum Break. Who the hell doesn't want to play Persona 5 or Nier Automata ?

That's why we buy PS4's and Xbox One's. Not because we want parallax occlusion mapping on every leave that hangs on a tree.

@ConanTheStoner: Nah, I gave reasons and can give more. Matter of fact, we had this discussion at some point. As for amount of quality exclusives, I definitely expect dozens by the end of the generation. It's slow going right now though.

But likewise, if what PC offers is much more appealing to you, cool. I get PC's appeal.

And i'm certainly not cheerleading what the consoles are either, they've all lost their way in some capacity.

Nier Automata spells out an overwhelming appeal for the PS4. PC ? Xbox One ?

@acp_45: Right? The game's existence, the fact that platinum is handling the mechanics and that it's getting a good budget... it's a damn miracle. It's literally what I imagined the perfect sequel to Nier would be after I first beat it.

@tushar172787: Yea, but it doesn't make a big difference.......looked at many tests running core i3 4130 with 750 ti stock/OC vs PS4 and only a 5-10 FPS increase with a 750 ti/core i3 4130....

The thing about these threads is that it comparing two different platforms. Many people love the 8th gen consoles outside of this forum, in fact, many console players don't go on these forums, only a minority.......which is why you see threads like these and people supporting PC over console and VS threads....

Most of the market doesn't even consider a PC.

The consoles are not made for you because you're a PC gamer. The consoles are made for people who don't game that much and don't care about technical aspects. The consoles are made for people who just want to play the games they see on TV.

They need to be reeducated. They are fooled into believing they're having fun when they're not and their wrong opinions are hurting all of us.

@Slannmage: What do you expect when last generation lasted more or less almost 10 years ? We had to be in early Generation 9 as we speak not mid Gen8 as we are now.

almost double the frames on FO4 with higher settings.

the budget PC will perform far better than console in the future with better utilization of CPU cores.

When will people finally realize that video game consoles are designed for the mass CASUAL audience? That is why they have weak hardware, that's why they are designed to be close to plug and play.

This isn't some new trend in the video game world this is how everything in society operates. In regards to almost anything you can almost always get a better quality product for less money if you do it yourself rather than paying somebody else to do it. If your car breaks down and you decide to fix it then you can buy better quality parts and spend less money than if you took it to a mechanic who will put basic parts in it and charge you more money because they are doing it for you.

Yes for the price of a console you can build a better PC, but you have to build it and most CASUAL gamers out there don't want to do that. Its not hard at all but that doesn't mean they want to do it. They are perfectly fine with the visuals produced by the consoles and would rather spend the money to just open the box up and hook it up to the TV rather than trying to put together a computer.

Its the same reason why I have a car in my garage that will smoke the shit out of almost every normal production "sports car" that comes out and I spent a fraction of what those cars cost yet my car is twice as good. I bought my old Mustang for a couple thousand bucks and dumped thousands of dollars into it. Meanwhile every single time I go to the store I see like 10 newer model Mustang GT's driving around with people who spent $20-40,000 on them. I wipe the floor with all of them having spent MUCH less money than they did. So why do people do that and waste their money? Because not everybody has the will nor the experience to take a $2000 car and turn it into a 750hp machine. So instead they would rather just buy a production car that is "fast enough" for them that they can just hop in and drive away.

To the CASUAL person a 2015 Mustang GT is a fast car. To a car enthusiast a 2015 Mustang GT is not a fast car, I can build a "real" fast car for less money. Same with video games. To the CASUAL person the PS4 and Xbox can produce great graphics. To the gaming enthusiast the PS4 and Xbox hardware is garbage, I can build a machine that produces REAL good graphics, but I would have to you know...build it. Most people just don't want to do that.

Keep preachin' in the Desert...

If you are so content with your powerful pc, that's fine. Nobody is arguing about its power anyway.

If the consoles are so weak for you, don't buy them.

Different peoples, different tastes and flavors, there gonna always be some geeky fellas obsessed with fps/res/whatever crap...

As there gonna always be so some other fella to which this crap is the least of his concern, he just want to play games on a decent system, with decent fps, and decent res.

SW won't change this nor any other argument for the near future at least.

I agree that this is by far the worst generation of consoles since the video game crash. But, this thread is all hermit...

@Slannmage: Hi, you must be new. This has always been the case since PCs started using graphics accelerators back in the day. More powerfull PC parts come out the same year or a year after the console launches and since new ones come out virtually every year, old ones drop down in price quickly, this doesn't happen with consoles.

The biggest problem with consoles is the fact they have exclusives that PC gamers want to play. PC gamers have higher standards and are not happy about having to lower them and waste money on a console just to play a few exclusives. I don't care if a game like Fallout 4 runs like shit on console because I can play it properly on PC. However, when a game like Bloodborne runs like shit and I have no other option, it becomes a problem.

Exclusives suck. They are not for the gamer. They are for the companies that want you to buy into their closed platform so that they can collect more royalties, sell you more unnecessary accessories and services. IMO, consoles should just be entry level PCs. They should be open platform. Something that is cheap, simple and offers the basic experience for people who are oblivious or don't care too much about quality. Games can be developed to scale to hardware. Have console specs as the minimum and you can spend more and get better graphics and performance if you want. That way everybody is happy. No more multiple systems complicating things and causing clutter. No more wasting money. One platform with all games. That is the way it should be. No more system fanboys, just gamers united and enjoying games.

Eh, i've seen worse gens.

...which?

The PS1/N64 gen.

Using OP logic, so just look up what PC had in the 90s.

PS1/N64 was a great gen, I don't recall major performance issues.

every 3D game on N64 and PS1 had frame-rate issues and ran on an average of 20 frames. Mario 64 ran at mostly 20 frames. The difference is that now we have DF telling us what the performance issues are. And not to mention the mega awful draw-distance on PS1 where you couldn't even see what was literally in front of you, every From Software game suffered from this and from awful frame-rates too.

Every gen devs have struggled with the craziest bottlenecks imaginable, even on the software side. Now with the PS4 and Xbone we have systems that don't really have any bottleneck and devs still struggle. Now let that sink in for a moment.....

This gen is a curse on gaming. I hate everything about it. Look at fallout 4 for christ sake. Looks like a game from five years ago.

Just out of curiosity, what was stopping Bethesda from making Fallout 4 PC exclusive? I mean, if they did that, then it could be superb and they wouldn't have to dumb it down for the consoles.

So, why didn't they do that?

I have a sneaking suspicion that the reason they didn't do that is because the game wouldn't be financially viable without sales from the consoles. Which means that like it or not, there's a very real possibility that without these inferior consoles we wouldn't be getting Fallout 4 at all.

While what everyone said is true, the PC is always being upgraded, so therefore is perpetually ahead of any console in terms of performance.

The Part that is killing me, is that I bought a PS4, and I have been just so disappointed, due the following factors:

1. I have my Gaming PC hooked up to my TV, so it works exactly like a console if I need it to, just switch inputs.

2. Every Time, Like literally every time, I see a Game on PS4 that I want, I go look on Steam and guess what, It is Cheaper on the PC. Every Time. So while I really do want to play the PS4, I just end up buying the SAME GAME on steam, for much less. It happens over and over.

3. With a PC I can use Mouse and Keyboard, or I can use Gamepad if I want. I can tweak settings, download Mods, etc.

4. Lack of Games. I looked through every single PS4 Game on Gamefly, and have run through about 20 of them this year, and most of them were so disappointing I just sent them back within 2 days. My Queue only has 4 games in it right now, because I cannot find anything else that even interests me. And if I did, well I can just go buy it on Steam and play it on the PC.

So I find myself at a loss, as to why I have the thing? I had no idea that developers have gone so far and made basically every game on every platform. I choose the cheapest cost when I buy the game, which is ALWAYS PC and thus my PS4 just collects dust, and streams Netflix all day.

Now if the PS Store would price-match Steam, the story might change. Otherwise I wish I had never purchased a PS4.
