now, I am not trying to rant....but I feel that something like this, is truly truly horrifying.

My example is C&C3.

DLC just got released for the 360 version.

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/797/797615p1.html

5 maps for $6.25

But for the PC version.

http://browse.files.filefront.com/Command+and+Conquer+3+Maps+Levels+Missions+Map+Packs/;1979575;/browsefiles.html

112 maps for $0

I hope now....you can see whats wrong with this system....This is a huge part of the reason I buy multiplats for the PC....to avoid situations like these.

DLC content is great. It's MS that is making it cost an arm and a leg.

Yeah, I hate it also (although I'm guilty of buying the new Gears of War maps when I'm well aware they'll be free September 3rd).

expansions are fine...as long as they actually add more then new maps....which are very easy to make....But Paying for maps is outrageous.

Maps arent even very hard to make....trust me...Ive made my own for plenty of games....Its hard to learn....But once you get it....its rather fun...and even becomes a hobby.

In this case how do we know it's Microsoft who set the price ? It probably was, but how do we know EA didn't want to do that ?

And yet people want MS to dominate this console war. They've done terrible things to the PC world, and now they're going to do terrible things to console owners who are going to get milked and nickel-and-dimed to death.

amen, ppl need to learn the difference between a an expansion and DLC. DLC can be a package with just 3 maps or so, and some new mods. An expansion is pretty much a full fledge game but cut in half.

If someone else is still trying to defend it....consider this...at the current pricing model...those 112 PC maps should cost $140....that means that if DLC is fair....the PC gamers are getting $140 worth of content free....and the game came out only recently...can you imagine how much free stuff they will get within 2 years? Ironiclly...as a technicality....this would make PC gaming considerably cheaper in the long run.

Look, most lemmings can't be bothered configuring a PC, and going through a less convenient way to get their DLC.

I'm both a PC and 360 gamer, and the 360 is far more convenient than a PC.

Whether or not games play better are personal preference.

It's like saying,

Peter Jackson has a budget and a deadline for the Lord of the Rings movies.

Fan created movies have no such restrictions and you can find them on Youtube.

Quality difference? There's a lot.

Sure, there are really good player maps, but there are some newbies out there that always go "hey this is my first map, try it out, hope you guys like it" -- and that's included in the 112 player maps.

Exactly. The comparison is extremely weak, to say the least.

Players regularly create maps of higher quality than the developers themselves.

Remember Desert Combat?

That mod was so good that The Devs were hired by EA to make BF2.

I think a lot of game developers start off as Modders.

What's the point of this thread? We all know that PC mods extend the game greatly, far more than consoles, especially consoles within a closed system like XBL. Yes you get less maps but you can be absolutely sure that all of those maps are balanced, unlike probably 90 percent of those player created maps.

Quality =/= quantity. Anybody with a half a brain knows this. Just like we all know that 90 percent of player created mods are crap. Having the ability to do so is really nice, but really throwing it in console gamers faces is really weak, And you just come off looking like an Ahole which is pretty much the norm for hermits in system wars these days.

I just looked at them too... they're made by fans.

I wonder how much playtesting went into them? Lucky for them, they don't need to go through certification before they're released. Also lucky that they're available as is with absolutely no guarantees.

Besides...these devs are often on a limited timeframe and budget....that doesnt apply to map makers....they have as much time as they need to make and perfect their own maps...

i'm not saying that MS isn't guilty of milkage, but it seems that all three console makers are guilty of this this generation. MS with their DLC, expensive arcade games, charging for everything and anything (hello, i paid $60 for this game, would it have killed you to throw in a gamer pic and a theme??), Nintendo with $75 controllers and expensive VC games (i'm not saying they aren't great games, but you can buy the old hard copy versions cheaper), and Sony with the blu-ray. While SOny annoys me for a lot of reasons, it seems like that are milking their fans the least. You can use any blue tooth headset and can use an HDD.

Some people don't know any better - I mean, you've got the Sony HT-DDW700 HTiB in your setup, which has a mediocre receiver, unpowered subwoofer, and plastic speakers. It's very much a sound system that a salesperson would point you to, whereas an audio enthusist, for about the same money, would have told you to go with an Onkyo 590, save you money, and then pick up a nice subwoofer and down the road swap out the speakers for something better if you felt the need. They would have explained how the Onkyo receiver would have let you swap out the included dental floss for some real speaker cabling, the importance of a good subwoofer, and pointed out the extremely questionable center channel on Sony's HTiB units. But audio equipment isn't something people really understand, so they buy Sony and Bose systems, which have mediocre sound quality, and don't understand why people spend more than they did on their HDTV on yamaha, denon, velodyne, et cetera.

Some people make the mistake of buying home theaters in a box, without understanding that exceptionally few companies make good HTiBs (yamaha and onkyo do okay) and that most of what they find in the store exists solely because Sony, Bose, JVC, et cetera saw they could make tons of money off of people. And that's why DLC exists. Microsoft saw they could make money off of console gamers. And you know what? Until another console starts offering free DLC, they will continue to be able to do so. Gamers who *know better* still download map packs, themes, et cetera for their system. And the smart people? Well I'm playing Oblivion on PC, and my little brother has every emulator known to man on his laptop - he already owns all the games on the Wii virtual console in cartridge format, why pay for them twice?

expansions are fine...as long as they actually add more then new maps....which are very easy to make....But Paying for maps is outrageous.

Maps arent even very hard to make....trust me...Ive made my own for plenty of games....Its hard to learn....But once you get it....its rather fun...and even becomes a hobby.

PS3_3DO

Developer maps are 99% better then user made maps.

not at all....

They built the game so don't you think they can make better stuff.

no...their are plenty of people out their who make maps as a hobby...or because they even want to get hired as map makers....

Besides...these devs are often on a limited timeframe and budget....that doesnt apply to map makers....they have as much time as they need to make and perfect their own maps...

many maps even get adopted for tournamets.

Ok didn't know that. I hope that World in Conflict has got a built-in Map Editor on the 360.

I doubt it....Few other Console games get one...and those that do...generally get scaled down ones that arent anywhere near as powerfull as the PC ones are, because they lack the ability to import textures and objects and to change the settings of the objects (farcry: instincs)
