So, how much for a CPU, RAM and Mobo? Oh I forgot the hard drive, case, PSU, KB/M and a monitor. Not to mention headphones/speakers.

It's a decent pricing point but I think I'll wait it out. There's literally no reason to upgrade right now aside from maxing out bf4 in MP, maybe star citizen I guess? Not enough games currently that demand that level of power.
Waiting for much more demanding, next gen titles. Not ones that are stuck within a transitional period.

Stop thinking about yourself. You have to think about those that don't already have a gaming rig. PS4 is still the better deal.
Anyways, PC has the inferior exclusives. I'm not even a fan of Xbox, but Xbox has way better exclusives than the PC. PS4 in my opinion has the best and Nintendo has some solid exclusives as well. PC exclusives are targeted to socially inept nerds, RTS and MMO's genres.

That's great and all (and largely true)...but the PC has no answer to the simple fact that a huge number of amazing games each year can't be played on PC.

Gee, I didn't know a video card is all you need to game. So if I order that video card alone from newegg and I take it out of the UPS box can I plug the video card to my tv and start gaming? What kind of cotroller does it use?
I spent $315 and bought a graphics card and put it in my work PC and turned it into a gaming PC that shits all over the next gen consoles and cost me less than either of them.
even if it weren't for exclusives I would still prefer consoles. PC gaming will never be as straight forward, fast, cheap and simple as just putting a game and wait for it to boot.

On the subject matter: the 290s pretty damn amazing, but I really want to wait until we see how it runs with aftermarket coolers. I just don't think I could stand such a hot GPU.

Update: Based on your feedback, I took the IceQ X2 cooler off the HIS Radeon R9 280X and stuck it on our R9 290 sample. Cooling was dramatically improved. The FurMark stress test maxed out at 76 degrees while the card never exceeded 63 degrees in Crysis 3 and Battlefield 4. So it seems as expected the board partners will be able to solve the heat issues of the reference card.
I would wait for one with an after market cooler, I've read that this card get really hot, and its extremely loud. Still I would take the GTX 780 over it, mainly because when over clocked its faster than the Titan as well, and I like the features of nvidia much better. Also I dont see how one graphics cards can make consoles irrelevant.

This is EXACTLY what I meant in my op. Who here is typing out their ideas on their console? Odds are console fanatics are on a pc that just needs a decent video card to play games decently. No...that doesn't mean ALL pc's are just waiting for a video card, but many of them are.
Since cpu's have stagnated in the past few years, pretty much any quad core in the past 5 years will hold up well now, and so long as 8gb memory is in there, all you then need is the gpu (memory is dirt cheap). Tadah!
I am a PC gamer to the core, if its on PC and optimized its my go to platform I also have the consoles but purely for exclusives. building PC's for a living I can guarantee that a well designed PC spec is way better value for money compared with a console. But a lot of people think you need sit up straight in your PC chair to play games no couch surfing and you need a degree in Computing to get games to run.
Anyone with an ounce of common sense who has used a PC knows that it is BS. people will still use consoles for simplicity, Im holding out to see what happens with Mantle API whether its as good as AMD make out remains to be seen but with BF4 and star citizen behind it they are going pretty strong.
