The main reason why XBL will always be better then PSN this gen is simple. The 360 was built around XBL, while PSN is a added feature of the Playstation 3. This is not a bad thing for PS3 owners. Its just that online play is just another feature on the PS3 like Blu-Ray, web browser, photo program, etc. I'll explain it further.

When you turn your 360 on a little blip comes out with a message that says " X amount of friends online." You can literally hit one button and see who's online and what games you are playing. Sure you can do the same thing on PSN with about a dozen button presses****SEE EDIT, but its not as intigrated in the experiance. What I mean is, every time I turn on my 360 I check my friends list because its right in front of me. The only times I have played with friends on PSN is because they have called me on my cell phone to see if I wanted to play. The Party system is another huge feature on 360.

Another thing that people really over look is that mics come with 360s and not the PS3. I play with a bunch of people I work with and they all own both 360 and PS3. Well, no one besides me has a mic. It sucks playing MLB with my buddy and not being able to talk to him like we normally would. Also for tactical shooters it bugs me when 75% of my team don't have mics. It matters. I play Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 on 360 all the time, and the teams that talk and communicate win. Not to mention trash talking my buddy when I come through with 4 runs in the 11th inning is nice.Especially when I don't have to do it via text message on my cell phone.

The unified system on the 360 is awesome and stresses ease of use. The PSN is serviceable. Having to add friends for my friend's list and then for a specific game gets annoying. Also I love the fact that is I mute or avoid someone in one game on 360, then they are muted or avoided for all games. It's not like that on the PS3. Acheivements are also way more integrated into the experiance then trophys. As are simple things like voice chat, messages, etc.

In short the PS3 has decent free online play. Its not bad by any means. I mean look at the Wii, it could be a lot worse. That being said the 360 still has by far the best online experiance overall.

*** Edit I guess this is a bad example. A better one, Lets say you buy that new hotness online game. If you pop it in the 360 1 button and you are seeing whos playing (and on what map, whos seems to be playing in the same game etc). A couple of presses i'm joining the game in progress. PS3 you have add each friend that is already on you list to the friend's list for that game, then wait for the add, etc. I'm just talking about ease of use here.

Makes sense. I was just thinking now about how some people tell me that Xbox Live is better PSN and I kept wondering why. Now I know.

although i agree with you, this part made me

i dunno if youre aware, but if you press the big button on the middle of the playstation controller, then hold right until you scroll to the end of the XMB (literally, a 2 second process), it shows you the people on your friends list and under their names it tells you what they're playing...

and sony added a cross game chat a month or so ago...

the only really valid point in there is the party system bit :x

Agreed. The whole mic being crucial to winning is very true, not just in Rainbow, but many games, such as Halo, Halo Wars, Ghost Recon, Call of Duty (if you're playing hardcore), and most other games that require teams.

I agree somewhat, but let's put this into consideration: 1 service is free while the other costs money. They basically do the same things, however, but you seemed to sum up why you enjoy XBL more, and it makes perfect sense.

There the exact same, apart from a few features. Aside from that I don't use many of those features. Plus you what people never understand is that it'll all come down to personal prefrence XBL=/=PSN but when a person with a stable opinion outweighs the pros and cons of both it'll either be XBL>>>PSN or vice versa

Fair enough. I'd say it has very few major advantages over PSN compared to this time last year, personally. Just the cross game voice chat and that's it.

yeah, gaming aside, the mic can be a double edged sword for sure. its enjoyable when its your friend on the mic, but a rascist, homophobic 12 year old? not so much. thank you, mute button!

You bring up some pretty good points, but explain. Why are achievements integrated in the experience more than trophys? And how will this get people to pay $50 for LIVE if they don't already? But you do have some pretty good points. PSN has most of those features, just the only one that's unacceptable for not having is a party system.

Microsoft maintains and creates all the servers needed for online gaming ( every online game needs a dedicated server of some kind) while Sony only provides those needed for their published games, and then requires individual Devs to create and run their own.

I stopped reading when you complained about the way you access the friends list on PSN... If you're in the XMB, you just hold the right D-pad button and OMG you're at the friends list section! :o If you're in game, you press the PS button, and depending on where you last left the XMB, it will be on that selection. So OMG, if you were last in your friends list, you can press the PS button once and it shows your friends list! OMG Teh numbur3 of buttin prezzes!! oh noez!! One service is free (like PC..the way it should be) the other costs money. They both do the same thing essentially with a few MINOR differences. The only main one I'd give you is cross game voice chat for XBL, that's a great feature. Still not worth paying for though... Fail thread is full of fail.

You know, I always find it funny that M$ packages a mic with the 360, but then makes you pay a yearly fee to make any decent use out of it.

XBL is not exactly better ,just easier to use which makes it good. The PSN actually has a lot of features such as web browser and the PSN is pretty good. And the good thing about PSN is that it barely lags. Most of the games have dedicated servers and games are nearly lag free. Xbox live games barely have dedicated servers. Halo is basically a lagfest now. Gears of war 2 was fixed a little but it still lags enough to be noticable. They are both equal IMO. Xbox live is just easier but for people who dont know how to use PSN or have trouble using it. Its actually a good service. Its only missing cross game voice chat.

Xbox Live cost 40 dollars a year without 32 players being the standard in every game while PS3 has this feature in almost every game for free. This being my ONLY gripe, I find it inexcusable for Live not to have this as standard considering it has been on the market for the past 4 years now.

You probably play your 360 on a 56k modem because I pretty much never have lag issues on halo 3 or gears 2... I mean, halo 3 a lagfest? it's hard to take you seriously there...lol

A few points I'll reply to-

1. Thinking about it you are right about 4 (or hold down) presses to get to you friends. XBL displays them better as way more a little with out paging down.

2. Dedicated servers are a mixed bag. You gotta remember publishers can just take away online service. I can still play Crimson Skies & PGR2 on Xbox live. EA games from that long ago on xbox (I think the only dedi servers) have long since been shut down. Person to person is awesome because I will be able to play all the games a loooong time down the road.

3. $50 a year is if you pay full price. I always find cards ro $30 for 13 months or $2.30 a month. I can pay the price of a coffee each month for the better features. If PSN had a prem service with added features of XBL I would pay it. Like I said its not a bad service its just serviceable.

I'm sorry but all of that is not worth 50 bucks a year. And you're complaining about having to press way too many buttons to see which friends are online or not. Dude you only have to press two buttons on the ps3 controller to do that (PS button, and right on the dpad), you are just being lazy. Theres nothing you noted that would want me want to pay 50 bucks a year for a online service.

Sure you can do the same thing on PSN with about a dozen button presses, but its not as intigrated in the experiance.

Agreed. Once PSN has cross game voice chat/ voice messaging (hopefully up to 6 people) there will be very few small advantages Live has. I just got my 360s back and I forgot how amazingly unified and streamlined Live is. It can make your online experience better if you are a social person.

Sure you can do the same thing on PSN with about a dozen button presses, but its not as intigrated in the experiance.

Well.. I wont flame you because you're actually making valid points, however I will post my point of view: The idea of knowing what your friends are playing when you log on is a nice simple feature, but hardly anything special - it doesn't take me a long time to do the same on PSN but you're are right about that it takes more button time - 2-3 seconds? If you can't be bothered doing that it's your own problem and shouldn't be look upon as a positive/negative thing. The mic thing too is ehm.. I find it as a weak argument however this may just be me so I will stand corrected if needed to. I used to own an Xbox 360 until last year. I never used my mic (my own falut) but when playing CoD4 online there was never anything else than little kids talking trash. There was never at one time in my 1-year gaming experience with the Xbox 360 a single person who talked about tactics - only racism and trash talk. On the PS3 on the other hand, people never seem to talk - except sometimes in Resistance 2 or when playing in a clan - where most people usually do own a mic, be it on the xbox or PS3. So as you can see I find it a little weak, but you may correct me if you feel like. The global mute thing seems nice but is it really that much of a problem? have you ever been stalked in several games by the same person?! If yes then I do see the mute option as a good thing however I can't imagine alot of people having that much of a truble with stalkers.. in any game on any system.. The trophy/achievement is.. well I dont see the difference tbh and I guess its purely a matter of opinion. I will agree on the following though: voice chat and voice messages are needed for the PSN - other than that I dont see the real difference though.

Its only missing cross game voice chat.

you've never really used Xbox Live before have you, lol?? i'm just catching that vibe from. like you're just repeating things you've heard in other posts and hoping you seem like u have a point. most of the Ps3 games DONT'T have dedicated servers....some of the exclusives do, lol. and please list some of the "a lot of " features psn has that the 360 doesn't besides the standard web browser answer you gave please.

yup the sheer amount of intergration of xbox live and the actual 360 is insane. Whereas the PS3 wouldnt be any different if PSN wasnt there.

The web browers in PSN is sooooo horrible so idk why people bring that up like its a +. Its barely functioning, and my Iphone browser is 10000x better then it.

Responses to a couple differant people:

Achievements are better then Trphys because every single game has them. More unified is better. I play all differant types of games and like my gamerscore. I know some people could care less, but its a nice little bonus that I like.

Whoever said about mic's no being important its just not true. I play with real life friends and like minded online friends. We play as teams and whoop because of it. Also organizing clan matches (or playing clan matches), online leagues, times to get on to play, etc are all way easier. Mic's are important.

Whoever said they find it funny that mics are included but you have to payto use them is wrong. My girlfriend has a silver account and she chats with her friend that moved to PN (I'm in NY) all the time.

[QUOTE="SpideR_CentS"]

no one pays $50 a year. the standard deal is $29.99 for the 13 month card at toy's r'us and best buy and the ghost of circuit city. it is a common sale that you can find at least once a month. and the argument is true: i would rather pay $3 a month for xbl then psn for free. and anyone who needs xbl months, always check ebay, or any of the millions of deal sites. you can always find one, and afterwards you have over a year to find another one.

[QUOTE="RotaryRX7"]I stopped reading when you complained about the way you access the friends list on PSN... OMG Teh numbur3 of buttin prezzes!! oh noez!!

Indeed. You'd think a regular PSN user would have known that.

The only main one I'd give you is cross game voice chat for XBL, that's a great feature. Still not worth paying for though... Fail thread is full of fail.RotaryRX7

QFT. You can find $30 for 13 all the time. Bestbuy, Walmart, Amazon, Newegg, many other places.

I don't use PSN nearly as much because XBL is better and I have both. So instead of 1 button press its like 6 or 7 (over over over down down down down) to see what I can see in one button press on XBL. XBL lists like 13 friends of something on the main screen. PSN is like 4. Either way still faster to check the friends list and still more ingrained in the experiance of playing on 360 w/ xbl.

I do believe XBL is better, but only by a tiny bit. These are the features that make it a bit better Cross game chat, instant invite and party chat. Also the friends thing your brought up was just nonsense. You press right 3 times on PS3 and boom all your friends are there. Quick and easy. Also on the trophy thing sony already made it mandatory. I have both PS3 and 360,but I dont pay for live anymore. It just aint worth it in my eyes. I rather play online for free.

Friend recently got a PS3, so I can finally be unbiased regarding all 3 consoles. I thought PSN was pretty neat -- Home was fun, and it all being for free is a great deal. I agree that the 360 is a bit better with its XBL, because of how easy and all the things you can do with your friendslist, but PSN isn't far behind, at all. Microsoft needs to compete with that free price, because I didn't really see TOO much difference between the two.

Dude, first of all, like someone else already said, you can just press the middle button on the ps3 controller, scroll to the right and it shows you who is online. In addition to that, a message box appears at the top right of the screen notifying you who just logged in. As far as mic, YOU CAN USE ANY BLUETOOTH AS A MIC!!! There are bluetooths that are 20 bucks, just gotta look for them. So that solves your problem. So far, neither system is ahead .

I'm not much of an online gamer, but having used both PSN & XBL, I can't tell much difference. If XBL is better, so it should be! You're paying a decent subscription fee for it!

As for me, I'll stick with my FREE psn which does the same thing.

The way i see it, MS is more of a software company and Sony is more of a hardware company.

The things is though, software can be patched, but hardware cannot.

360's integrated online is truly amazing, but the 'extra' couple of button presses to do most of the things that live will do is fine for me. I really don't feel live is worth the money, from where I see it, its just MS being MS. I'd buy a 360 in a heartbeat if they removed Live fees. But I will not pay 40 bucks a year for a slightly more integrated experience. But to all those enjoy Live, I can see where they're coming from to a degree, but I feel people hate on PSN too much because its NOT live.

The one thing I don't understand though is how people claim achievements are better. The only thing Achievements have is that they are in all games (but all future PS3 games will have them, so its not that big a deal). But as an actual feature they're basically the same. And I feel saying I have 300 trophies and 3 platinum's means more than I have a gamerscore of 9000. But different Strokes.
