This Isnt The Year Of The PS3

Hype, hype, hype. Oh how I hate to get caught up in your backwash. Earlier this year, pseudo-journalists around the Internets were proclaiming that "This was the year of the PS3." They attempted to buoy their opinions on the backs of LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, Blu-Ray winning a "war" and the perceived waning of popularity of the Wii and Xbox 360.

Yeah, well, they were all kinds of wrong, cuz the PS3 crapped the bed and hasn't done jack to step up it's game.

There, I said it. More flame baiting, anecdotal observations and the plain truth.

So many media outlets went out of their way to fawn over the PS3 and make stupid proclamations.

Look, there's no two ways around it. Winning the format war and Metal Gear Solid 4 were THE high points of the year for the PS3. Say what you want about LittleBigPlanet, but nobody is talking about it at all, despite it's high praise and innovative community, even if it is destined to be a million seller. Resistance 2's single player campaign is an critical failure. Sure the multiplayer has long legs, but people don't buy PS3 games for the multiplayer component alone.

Instead, the Wii continues on it's path to madness and the Xbox 360 continues to undercut the PS3's price, exploiting the Blu-Ray player's price tag and making it look more and more ridiculously expensive, despite the expanded capabilities of the big shiny black box. Further adding insult to injury, Blu-Ray just hasn't taken off as it was expected to after winning the format war.

The biggest insult to the PS3 is the continued issues it has with multi-platform games. Of this year's crop of games, only GTA IV and Mirror's Edge have been definitively shown to look better than the much less powerful Xbox 360. Fallout 3 and Bioshock both embarrassed PS3 owners with it's poor performance and less than Xbox 360 graphics. It's a shame.

As a result, Xbox 360's, the main PS3 competition, has taken off on the success of Fable 2, Left 4 Dead and Gears of War 2, while the PS3 sales remain flat. What can the PS3 do? Who knows. I'm not the guy you should be asking. I'm just canary in the coal mine calling out all the so-called "experts" who proclaimed that 2008 would be the PS3's year. Let me tell you that it surely is not.

This topic seams like pre emptive damage control to me. The standards PS3 would have to meet here on SW for the PS3 to have "its year" would be ridiculous anyways.

It would have to have 10 AAAAE's, outsell the 360 2:1 and have a damn virtual reality peripheral for people to accept its doing good and even then Im sure you fanboys would still find a way to knock it.

Last year I was all about my 360 besides the time I spent playing SMG and MP3 on the Wii. I still enjoyed my PS3 at the time, but I was only playing it in short bursts.

This year the tables have turned and I play my PS3 almost exclusively with my 360 only getting a good dust off occasionaly and my Wii has become nothing more than a paper weight.

Just because the PS3 isnt leaps and bounds ahead of the 360 doesnt mean it didnt have an outstanding year.

This isn't the year of the PS3, but that doesn't mean its the total opposite, cows are getting this msg for some reason. We're just saying that PS3 did not start its road to dominance and if anything is pretty much neck and neck with the 360.

i disagree with games like motorstorm, lbp, R2, Socom , Valkyria chronicles, MGS4 IMO they beat all the xbox games that have come out this year. I was let down with Gears 2. So for me this is the year of the ps3.njean777

Sure, it's a good time to own a PS3, but 2008 was NOT the year of the PS3. Not even close. The only real success game was MGS4 and I think it got released to early. Summer is the worse time to release a blockbuster game. Resistance 2 and LBP are great games, but their sales weren't great and they didn't move the hardware. PS3 hardware sales actually dropped some the week those 2 games got released. Motorstorm 2 sales bombed hard. Even though Socom sold better, it wasn't because of the game, but the bluetooth headset that came with the game. :lol:

So 2008 was not the year of the PS3. Maybe 2009 will be. Killzone 2 is looking good and we know people with flock to FF XIII.

ok.. what about the other 30+weeks the the ps3 outsold the 360? and 360 is suppose to outsell a ps3 version of the same game.. why? because it has an install base of 6 million more.

but one more thing. software from EA, Namco Bandai, Ubisoft, and Konami all sold a better percentage on the ps3

Games wise I think it is tbh. More games so far and by the looks of it games on par or better.

BUT its not completely sonys year, it could have been ut MS pulled a big move with the price cut which will really hurt sony.

But its been good gameswise, MGS4 got the highest score for an exclusive, it also has the title of best graphics which is a nice win for sony, plus R2 and other games are out/coming out that are good.

(and before you start bashing my MGS4 bit, I got gears 22 and whilst its more fun than MGS4, tecnically mgs4 still wins out. And its not just me, many people out there in the world outside gamespot agree, but then they also agree that gears is more fun :P )

Hold on, did you say blu-ray hasnt taken off?? Have you been to Rogers video or Blockbuster lately in the past couple months they have increase there blu-ray section by a lot and they only cost a dollar more to rent so price really isnt an issue.

As of November 6, 2008, more than 1030 Blu-ray Disc titles have been released in the United States and more than 570 Blu-ray Disc titles have been released in Japan.

I dont even think DVD took off as fast as blu-ray has it took a couple years for DVD to hit the mass market and blu-ray has almost done it in the first year

In Denmark a bluray movie cost the same to rent as a regular dvd, also the price for a bluray movie is close to a dvd. I've bought The incredible Hulk on bluray for the same price as the dvd version so atleast I'm happy haha.
