Sony Report Reveals First Look at Absolute Blu-ray and HD DVD Disc Sales Figures Mon Apr 09, 2007 at 01:54 AM ET Tags: Disc Sales, Sony (all tags) Thanks to a new research report from Sony, industry watchers are getting their best look yet at hard high-def disc sales numbers from Nielsen VideoScan, including per-title sales figures for high-def discs released on both next-gen formats.
Focusing on sales data for the week ending March 18 (the same week that Sony's 'Casino Royale' smashed high-def records by shipping 100,000 units to retail), it should come as no surprise that the VideoScan numbers released by Sony are favorable to the studio, with five of its releases ranking among the top-selling next-gen discs that week. The numbers that week were equally as impressive for Blu-ray, which outsold HD DVD by a ratio of 9:2, and dominated the list of top-selling next-gen discs -- the HD DVD edition of 'The Departed' was the only HD DVD disc to appear among the top ten best selling high-def discs.
But while abstract ratios and percentages like these have been bandied about for several months now, the Sony report goes one step further, providing the first public release of hard sales figures for HD DVD and Blu-ray discs from Nielsen VideoScan, the home entertainment industry's leading source for competitive sales data. Among the numbers revealed: as of March 18, VideoScan put the cumulative number of Blu-ray titles sold since the format's inception at 844,000 units, versus HD DVD at 708,600.
But perhaps most interesting are the per-title sales numbers for the top ten selling discs across both formats, which are provided both in the form of a weekly tally (again for the week ending March 1, and as year-to-date totals. While these charts confirm the previously reported strong showings for such A-list titles as 'The Departed' 'Batman Begins' and 'Superman Returns' (with each clocking per-format sales totals since-inception of at least 28,000 units sold), they also demonstrate a very steep drop-off for titles outside of that top rung, with even discs among the top-ten best sellers that week moving fewer than 1000 units apiece:
While we should note that the VideoScan numbers are not all-inclusive (for example, they don't include discs sold at Wal-Mart or some online merchants), the lower sales numbers at the bottom end of weekly list and on display elsewhere in the report (where some titles are listed as selling fewer than 200 units since inception) are certainly still a sobering reminder that both formats still have a long way to go in their shared quest to supplant standard-def DVD.
Casino Royale only sold over 28,000 in it's first week. This war hasn't taken off for consumers and we finally have proof. DVD will be around for way too many years to come.

Â
that's normal, it's not selling that much yet, because it's a new technology. The DVD took some time to replace the VHS, and the Blu-ray will required even more time to replace the DVD in the mass market. But it will.
I agree in time it will. We still need to realize that the majority of tv owners are non hd. Yes year over year sales of hd tv's are doing great, but there is a huge base of consumers who have not even purchased an hd set and they will wait for at least 3-6 years before converting. I do feel Bluray will win simply because sony pictures does a great job of making good films. I am a movie buff So I buy movies that are good, I gave up dvd in nov of last year and will not be buying anymore of those disc moving forward.Â
yup, that's the normal course those things go. It starts slow, but in the end HDTVs and next gen disc formats will become as cheap as DVDs and SDTVs are today. And even while it's still a bit more pricey, it'll become mainstream. That should take some 3 years.

I think if it was only Sony Pictures supporting Blu ray there'd be no competition for HD DVD. It's the OTHER companies which are pushing BD to the max. What movies has Sony Pictures brought out apart from the Spider Man series that's being sent to the award ceremonies over and over?Liquid_47
Bond? Da Vinci Code? Charlie's Angels...
lol, they're not too bad.Â
BR counts all their sales from discounts HD-DVD doesn't. This stuff is too funny, but luckily I get to be format neutral and sit back and laugh at people tooting their horn so early on. Using figures from Euro launch and sales that add in buy 'such and such hardware get so many BR discs free' as well. LOL. Declare victory, so I can laugh as it gets prolonged when HD-DVD players hit $199.99 and below months faster and eventually, when someone does win, no one really wins because MS is laying the foundation for downloadable content to take over as we speak and also got BR to up their codec on some discs to VC-1 in their HD-DVD efforts. If you enjoyed the product whether it lasts or not you didn't get 'owned'. You only get owned if you assume value for others property. PS3 is a good console and BR movies are nice, but the arrogance of the Sony and their fanbase sold me on buying multiplat games for 360 (achievements, controller and great on-line help as well), as well as HD-DVD multiplats over their BR counterparts. I wonder how many BR discs I'll have to purchase before Sony ever makes a profit off me.

........i read this in another website and i was wondering if its true. i have my heart set on ps3 but it would be a dam shame if i cant watch films on it.

Anybody who thinks Blu-Ray isn't going to win really needs to rethink their stance on the issue.Wasdie
itll "win" in terms of murdering HDDVD, but it terms of it becoming the standard, itll depend solely upon HDTV's become more mainstream with it. (and theyre on their way there)Â
LOLGO!!!!!! 360....you have the upper hand now....toot tootThe reason why Blu-ray is outselling HD-DVD all comes down to the gaming consoles basically. This is because while HD-DVD drives are add-ons for the 360, Blu-ray drives are automatically in playstation 3 systems. So, if it weren't for the gaming systems, it might be an even battle. Blu-ray might have sold more or HD-DVD might have sold more. The thing is is that because every ps3 automatically comes with this blu-ray optical drive, that adds up to a total of around 2.7 million blu-ray drives sold since 2.7 million ps3s were sold. But, since HD-DVD is an add-on to the 360, meaning you don't have to get it in order to get the 360, only (not quite sure) around a few hundred thousand HD-DVD drive add-ons were sold. It's not because blu-ray is better, infact they're both BASICALLY the same thing. Now, think about this. What would happen if HD-DVD was built in the 360. Yep, HD-DVD would have destroyed blu-ray because while 2.7 million blu-ray drives would have been sold, about 10.7 million HD-DVD drives would have been sold, since 10.7 million 360s have been sold. Think about this.

You jumped down my throat without even knowing my complete view on the issue. Also a true reader will read to gain full knowledge and not by quick cheap soundbites. We should be able to read a passage that doesn't even take 3 mins to read. If your attention span is that short then I can't help you. But hey whatever works for you go for it. Also if you actually read any of my post you would know I support blu ray. Of course that means you would have to have the attention span that last longer than 10 secs.Just so you guys know, sales are not all that great for either format. next time try answering be directly instead of pointing out to an essay. Instead of calling what I wrote zero reason, read and UNDERSTAND it. If you want to keep your readers attention shorten it and get to the point. We all know that blu-ray could be doing better but as of now the data only suggests that it will get better from here on out.

They released big box hits recently with the pursuit of happiness and casino royale and Rocky Balboa(in jan they had Gridiron Gang but I don't think that sold very well). Is that it? They haven't even sold a million Blu-Rays unless you add in the PS3. How many DVD's are in people homes. Over 300 million or more? What does the XBox 360 has to do with this. It's a game console, not a movie player.

Yeah standalone BluRay player cost way more than HD-DVD players when they first came out (Toshiba model HD-DVD was like $499.99 and a Sony standalone was like $999.99)Â They still cost a little more , but they are closing the gap, and PS3 obviously helped tons to win this format war.

Someone please explain why I need a Blu-Ray player. I have a good LG DVD player that upconverts, and it looks fantastic on my HDTV. I'm supposed to buy a new player when I can get all the movies on regular DVD? lolNumber_1_Gamer
Upconversion isn't the same thing as real HD source material. Do you also watching standard defintion channels on your HDTV?

The PS3 actually does a very good job at Blu-Ray playback..the HD-DVD, eh not so much. I mean nothing for quality, its just the fact that the remote for the 360 sucks harder than the Blu-Ray remote for the PS3...
Also, I like the way, you can view Blu-Ray info such as Codec used (so I know why Blu-Ray movies PQ looks like crap..looking at you MPEG-2!) Current Audio output, and bitrates for each...something I cannot do with the 360.
LOL!! That sales list was great. Movies that just got released selling less then 2000 units for it's first week. :D Wait a minute, aren't there over 2 million PS3 with Blu-Ray out there. Why are sales of Blu-Ray movies so low. LMAO!! Because no one cares about Blu-Ray movies, that's why.

An actual 1080p source looks FAR better than a 480 source stretched into a higher resolution.
If you can't tell the difference, either fix your TV or get your eyes checked.Â

Why buy an HDTV when you can watch DVDs on an SDTV. Lets put it like this, cable TV is going HD, video games is going HD, TVs are going HD, why wouldnt movies go HD? People forget that when you have a Blu ray player it also upconverts your DVDs so you can watch you new HD movies and upconvert your old DVDs, its not like you have to replace your old collection. People act like they started on an Upconverting DVD player, NO, most likly they built their collection on an old DVD player and spent money to upconvert it for a small improvement but now HD offers a LARGE improvement and people act like its rediculous to watch HD movies on an HDTV???

MPEG-2 can actually produce excellent results if given enough room and bitrate. Crank, which is regarded as being one of the best in terms of PQ on HD-DVD or Bluray was encoded in MPEG-2.  Â

It may look a lot better (well actually it does :) ) put with the current price structure I would rather stick with dvd's for the next few years. When which ever format eventually takes over from dvd it will be just as cheap and worth investing in.
