Rather embarassing. The NES and SNES were great - tons of third party games (Mega Man, Final Fantasy, Contra, Castlevania, etc. etc.), the best first party games (Super Metroid, Super Mario World, ALTTP, etc. etc.) and didn't rely on a gimmick to sell the system (although the NES had a few gimmicks), but instead relied on good games.

if its selling so well, how can you call it a gimmick?even a casual wouldnt pay $250 for a gimmick.

It's selling so well because of the gimmick - while the Xbox 360 sells based on good games, Nintendo puts a poorly put together system with a primitive gyration controller and sells it for $250 (their most expensive console ever).

It's great!

I just wish the Wii was as satisfying and complete a system all round as the SNES was.

That machine just got everything right.

The only mistake Nintendo made during the SNES era IMO was censoring some blood and slight sexual images in some games, like Mortal Kombat and Final Fight etc. Other than that the SNES was a perfect machine in every single way relative to the times.

I just wish they could iron out all the current little niggles with the Wii, and we would have a very very good gaming system on our hands...

I started playing video games when I was 4 (1981). I was 8 when the NES came out. I remember how things were back then and how much they changed after 1985. In my mind, the Wii has as much potential as the NES did to rejuvenate the industry.

Personally, I could not be more pleased. I think it's great that The best video game company ever is getting the accolades it deserves. This just proves that you don't have to be the most powerful system on the block with movie-like graphics to be a great console.

Gaming should be about fun, and apparently the masses agree. People on this forum will say it's all just casuals, but that's not entirely true. These same people don't represent the outside world and are somewhat delusional and are wishful thinkers.

The Wii's ok I guess.

But I can't help to feel that it's mainly a marketing ploy for Nintendo to get back on top.
Lots of PR and consumer targetting but the games aren't there. At least,  they're not there yet.

I mean sure it's fun and all I guess, but it really isn't the SNES.
Right now I'd give the Wii a 6.5/10, maybe 7/10.

Don't care personally, they aren't half as good as they were in the 2D era. They don't deserve the attention they're getting lately. The Wii has sales it certainly doesn't have the games or support which is what matters.

Shrug.  So far so good.  Let's see how MP3 plays.

Then get some RPGs and Adventure games.

And a few decent Wiimakes.

And I'll be completely happy.

It has the possibility of reaching SNES level, if more developers start supporting it. It has a long way to go in regards to adventure gamse and rpgs though. Most of the great nintendo rpgs have all migrated over to sony.

I'm pretty happy with Nintendo's decision not to enter the HD race and release a $300-600 console. The games have been somewhat satisfying to me as I didn't expect much at launch (I don't know who should).

Now I'm starting to see some great games come in and online will start up soon, and though I'm not an online gamer (besider Counter-Strike of course) I think Nintendo is doing things right this time around.

Well, I'm witholding judgement on the games coming for the most part. 3D Zeldas never appealed to me, where Mario 64 was *INCREDIBLE* and the 3D Metroids were worth additions to the series... And Smash Bros. is my most beloved Nintendo series right now. I wish Kirby games were as good as they were in the 2D days, but I'm still crossing my fingers. For me, this generation has potential to be a good one, though I doubt anything will trump the Kirby's Adventure and Super Metroid days.

That's just what I want out of it... Right now, I think Nintendo's "return to mainstream" is a bit of a farce. With the NES/SNES they were mainstream because they had the games. Now they're mainstream because they have a fancy controller, and the games are pending. The controller does not = fun, nor does it = good games - good developers producing good software leads to that. That ain't happening yet in any really noteworthy way, so Nintendo's sales are, in my opinion, not deserved on the grounds that they deserved to win the NES/SNES generations.  We'll see after the holiday season though.

I've been gaming since the atari 2600 era, yes i had one, and I've owned every Nintendo system to date.  I still have a Virtual Boy too.

I am glad to see Nintendo doing well again, because I think they make some of the best games around.  That being said, I'm a little disappointed in the Wii right now.

The problem for me is that the current games for the system do not show what I believe to be the potential of the system.  Most of the non-mini game collections, do not make good use of the controller.  Madden and Monkey Ball are steps in the right direction, but many of the first person shooters and adventure games  haven't been executed that well. Swinging the remote to generate a canned sword swing is not the best use of the controller.  I want completely mapped motions.  Then the Wii will be amazing.  And I hope Metroid shows how to properly handle first person controls.

All that being said, I guess I want to see Nintendo show that the remote works well for all genres, not just a select few.  And I would like to see more "epic" type games.  I know the system is geared towards everyone, and to pull in many of the non-gamers, the party games are needed, but I think we are seeing to many of these types of games.  It's not just Nintendo.  The third parties are just as guilty.  I think the third parties see the success Nintendo is having with these unique or simple games, and the third parties think they can do the same.  The result is that we are getting too many of these types of games.

These are just my thoughts, and I know not everyone will agree.

im a old school Nintendo fan, to where the first console game was super mario brothers. i would say from my stand point, that the market of today isnt as fun as the video game market of yester years. video game back then was at its greatest moment. if you every heard someone say music today is lame compared to music today, then believe them. if you hear someone say movies today isnt the same as it use to be  back then, then listen to what they say.

if someone who actually grew up with the video game industry, though i missed the atari years. i can say that video games back then was so fresh and care free, to where you see developers taking so many kinds of risks, compared to video games of today. developers of today are more taking the safe route, just as with what hollywood is doing. there basically putting out games that they assume is a definate sell. we all know mature games sell, but the industry cries for new gaming experience.

to answer your question. the step Nintendo too was just, and very respectful and brave. Nintendo made a move, to where they didnt know what the hell to expect. we dont need 3 machines on the market, that offer the same taste in games. the wii definitly is going to be as diverse as the Ds, to where it offers games to every demographic, which is a plus. i like the fact that Nintendo put out a console, that feels so refreshing, to where it makes a older gamer like me feel like the good old days.

i think this is why Nintendo is selling so well with the wii. the misconception is that Nintendo is selling to only the casuals, but in truth, there selling to people who were original gamers, who felt that the industry doesnt cater to there needs. i gave the ps2 that respect, that it offers things that made it felt like a true console, even though it had media features.  the wii and its new controller offers so much more, being it can emulate a few arcade set ups, which is a plus for many who miss the old arcade feel.

Nintendo made a drastic and well respectful move, which could of hurt or heal them, which right now its healing them and giving the Nintendo brand, as well as most sectors in gaming a Rebirth.

Never was I a hardcore Nintendo fan. Preferred Sega. And loved both Genesis and SNES equally. To be honest....I'm happy to see Nintendo back in track. But now, the market is totally different. And, imho, there are other platforms to embrace and other games and genres to embrace. Kudos to Nintendo for their unrelenting endeavors in the industry. But what dictates the gaming industry are: GAMES.

Nintendo could be the #1 gaming system....like iPod being the #1 mp3 player.....but there are many games to look forward to not just Nintendo 1st party games.

sorry you in my opinion isnt old school. if you say the wii has bad graphics, youre definitly not what we call a original old school gamer. a true old school gamer doesn't care about graphics. i still go back and play ps1 and n64 games and say wow, can you even do that? can you even look at games like luigi mansion and say wow?

then again from a artist standpoint, which i think of myself as.. i definitly look at video games far differently than you do. i still admire the graphics from old school 2d games dating from the NES days. i mean i look at mike tyson punch out and say wow. you call the wii a bad console, with a few games, yet the console been out for a few months!? you already see the future line up growning, you see the third parties getting better and better, then again youre a lemming.

I look back at the SNES fondly because of all the fun I had with that system. I look and play on the Wii now and can only sigh and hope Nintendo does better next gen. I'm not impressed with the Wii one bit and I'm having a hard time getting over the fact that it's not going to sit in my entertainment center like every other Nintendo console before until it's under $100 for a bundle.

I like the Wii, but I think it still has quite a bit to prove as far as games. That is not to say I haven't enjoyed what there is so far but only time will tell. This is the first year after all and the Wii kinda came out of nowhere.

I've been gaming since the NES and GB, and have been playing on every nintendo system since then (even the virtual boy--because it was dirt cheap at the end.  Also- i play psp more than ds).  I would definitely say the snes was their golden age-best games of their gen.  The n64 had the best games of its gen, although nintendo was obviously in trouble.  GC was better than n64 in 3rd party support, but worse 1st party (I love pikmin!)

As for the wii, it's hard to tell this early.  There are a lot of games now that use wiimote as a gimmick.  It's only the worst games that use it as a gimmick, and I think there are a lot of nintendo haters that call it a gimmick just to emphasize the system's failings and ignore where it works.  Sure, the controls are tacked on twilight princess (gc port btw), but those controls work really well in certain respects.  The fact that the wii's only AAA is a mini game collection doesn't help either, because it portrays the wii as only good for minigames- which is not true.  I'll add that wiisports is sooo something nintendo would do, especially to bundle it in.

And i'll just add that the wii is not outside nintendo tradition.  They always explored weird techs and different ways to play games.  Eg. light gun, power glove, superscope, snes mouse, GB camera, ds, wii, virtual boy, even game&watch.  If anything the wii and ds are nintendo being more 'nintendo' than ever, after they've been humbled.  maybe they're too humbled! lol

Only a matter of time until someone comes in, "well of cour'se you're not really a true, old school, gamer, even if you have been gaming for 20 some years, because you don't value the same things that I do.  No, true, old school gamers are, of course, like me."  I like that little touch where you say "Then again from ar artistic standpoint, which I think of myself as.."  Very subtle there Pablo.

My mental image of you is a lot like this:

Except in a different venue.

Plenty of truly old school gamers have always loved graphical advance - in fact, since before you were even gaming.  It's the height of hubris to define "true gamer" or "old school gamer" by what you value in games.

It is Gimmick and alot of casual with job will pay $250! Alot of friends and co-workers I know (Non-Gamer ones.) got a Wii because of the hype and Gimmick!

Now before you start saying that I'm BS and normal people wouldnt waste $250 and such. Atleast from where I live, If you go out to have an OK dinner with your wife or girl friend; it will easily cost you well over $150 with drink! So $250 is really nothing for alot of people!

Nintendo has made the right moves as a company, and it's good to see their approach met so well by consumers.  That's about it for me, I'm glad that to see such a company do well.

Separate from that view, I'm glad one of the companies is trying something different with gaming.  The Wii suits my gaming tastes and will help my wife and I spend some quality gaming time together.  I hope it builds on what the DS has done for handhelds.  The best part that appeals to my oldschool side lies in the VC.

What are the thoughts of old-school NES and SNES fans, regarding the recent revival of Nintendo in the mainstream?

Lilac_Benjie

I think that with Nintendo, it's business as usual. Innovation has always been their trademark.

Rumble Pak? Nintendo. First thumb analog? Nintendo. Let's talk gimmicks. Who remembers Robby the Robot? The SUPERSCOPE! Nintendo has had it's share of flops, but they always try something new. Also there seems to be a tendancy for nintendo to push ENJOYABILITY over horsepower.

I've owned every Nintendo system, with the exception of the Gamecube, and it was nice to come back home with the Wii. MORE OVER, the Wii has capabilities via it's game downloads for me to access classic games. I think by and large, the Wii is a very good thing!

Not trying to say  is not entertaining. Is a fun system to have when you have  few friends over. But, I still believe it sells alot do to hype and Gimmick ( a very good Gimmick lol ), because like I said alot of non-gamers friends I know rush out and got one lol

Is really good to see Nintendo come back with a force. They made some of the greatest game, but I just whish Wii has better graphic and stuff to match up against 360 and PS3.

Played the NES and the SNES like mad back in the day.

I don't give a damn who's on top so long as there as good games to play on the system they make.

Once a decent number of good games hit the Wii (and that simply hasn;t happened yet) I'll jump on the bandwagon, right now I could care less - not enough good games.

What are the thoughts of old-school NES and SNES fans, regarding the recent revival of Nintendo in the mainstream?

Lilac_Benjie

In all honesty I get a little giggly when I think about it.  I got this same giggly feeling recently when the Portland Trailblazers landed the #1 draft pick after being terrible for so long.  Thinking about either makes me smile uncontrollably.  When I say "giggle" I don't mean that I literally start giggling, but I get this internal feeling like giggling.

I am definitely very happy for Nintendo.  I might have teared up a little bit had they gone the way of Sega as a software only company.  That would have been a very sad day indeed.

I just wish the Wii was as satisfying and complete a system all round as the SNES was.Lilac_Benjie

It will be. SNES wasn't "complete" right away.

How wil lit be complete without the main franchises from 3rd parties?

I love it. The DS is my favorite handheld ever and the Wii is everything I could've hoped it to be.
The only problems I have with the Wii deal with third-party games. However, that's not Nintendo's fault that third parties decided to ignore the Wii at first, so I'll let it slide.

The NES and SNES were great - tons of third party games (Mega Man, Final Fantasy, Contra, Castlevania, etc. etc.), the best first party games (Super Metroid, Super Mario World, ALTTP, etc. etc.) and didn't rely on a gimmick to sell the system (although the NES had a few gimmicks), but instead relied on good games.AHUGECAT
Actually, the very success of the NES was due to a gimmick.
In order to get retailers to stock the NES after the crash of 1984, Nintendo passed off the NES not as a videogames console but instead as a toy centered around ROB the Robot. Only because of ROB, a major gimmick, did Nintendo get their foot in the door.

if its selling so well, how can you call it a gimmick?even a casual wouldnt pay $250 for a gimmick.

It's selling so well because of the gimmick - while the Xbox 360 sells based on good games, Nintendo puts a poorly put together system with a primitive gyration controller and sells it for $250 (their most expensive console ever).

I'm pretty sure Nintendo has already proved that Wii isn't a gimmick.  It would have flopped majorly if it was only a gimmick.  Also, I find it funny that you say the 360 is "selling" because of good games, when the console isn't really selling all that rapidly at all.

How is the wiimote primitive?  If the wiimote is primitive, then what exactly is the sixaxis?  The Sixaxis merely has tilt, the wiimote however has tilt, a pointing device, and an accelerometer... not to mention a second tilt enabled controller (AKA the nunchuk).  You really come off as a "fakeboy."

I think anyone who complains about Nintendo simply doesn't have the right to.  They scream "bu bu I expect teh grafix from teh nex-gen!!!!", yet they ignore that there are not one, but TWO other consoles that deliver that.  They scream, "bu bu teh GIMMICK," yet they ignore that there are not one, but TWO other consoles that deliver standard controllers.  They scream, "bu bu I want teh decent online!!!," yet they ignore that there are not one, but TWO other consoles that deliver decent online right now.

But the bottom line is this: Nintendo is offering something different, and the fanboys are scared ****less that it's going to take over.  I don't blame them, they're scared for the same reasons old, fat, white republicans sitting in political offices are scared today: they're afraid of change.

imho its great overall. as a system its a pleasure to use. it has some great games (though it has its fair share of absolute rubbish too) and its doing things differently. withthe N64 and GC nintendo had lost the plot imho. i actually ignored the N64 as the games were more expensive and sony were offering a far more tempting proposition at the time (PS1 was sony at their finest imho). i only got a GC after it was out a few years.

however since iwata has taken over, thay have really gotten their act together. there actuall advertising (ive seen 2 DS and 1 wii add on the telly today...that more than either of the other 2 consoles). there going against the grain which i think is fantastic. the new controller is excellent overall (i have a few little gripes but nothing major). The DS is also a great handheld that really brings new opportunities to the arena.

at the mo the wii lacks top quality games (understandable really) and thats really its major weakness at the mo imho. froma processing perspective....the only thing i miss is the lack of dedicated physics hardware. if there was a PPU to compliment the CPU and GPU then it would be a really well rounded machine. detailed physics + wiimote and nunchuck=WOOHOO!!! imho.

but overall i think its great to see em doing well. they diserve it imho, they have really come out all guns blazing. i just hope they dont let the success get to their heads like it did before.

Lilac_Benjie

Confused

the Wii is selling alot but to be honest its not all that....had it on launch then sold it as the games are lame

party games are ok but most of the time gamers will be gaming in thire own...

nintendo is not what ot used to be.....

back in the day (snes) we had donkey kong, doubledragon, street of rage, a bunche of classic mario games, super punch out, flashback, another world, prince of persai etc

i boght it on launch cause of zelda and i had high hopes for controller and first party games

then...

the good games got delayed and the controller wasnt used to its potetial by developers

the graphics didnt bother me but the games did

nintendo is going for the non gamer and forgot about the gamers who cared....the ones that shared thire history

Excuse me? I don't have a right to complain about a video game console? Jeez, who put you in charge? I have every right to complain about a luxury purchase if I want to. Just like everyone who wants to complain about the PS3, 360, or PC have the right. Are there some hidden unspoken rules about video games that I haven't learned in past 20 years? Yes, Nintendo is doing one thing different. Does that mean it's good or bad? Eye of the beholder really. But who is really scared of change here? Has the Wii changed more then the PS3/360 from their previous consoles? That's debatable.

Wait, you praise the 360, and call the Wii a poorly put together system in the same paragraph?  Well....we are in system wars...

No, they buy 360 games because of the eye candy grahics. Not because the games are good. They buy Wii games because they want to experience a new way to play games, not because the games are good...

As for nintendo, I'm very pleased on how they are handling themselves lately...
