@darthbuzzard: Being an irrelevant gimmick is the only evidence you need.
Lets just say it's ingenious to think VR isn't a fad, because so many people do even though they are wrong.
If you can see an important technology coming to fruition, it's because you were smart enough to see it coming when the rest of the world couldn't. The same thing happened for phones, PCs, TVs which were all thought to be fads.
Ingenious nah, delusional yep lol.
Cool. So what are your predictions for the next 5 years if you're so confident?
Will VR grow or will it decline? Will it get more AAAs or will it get none after Alyx?
In 5yrs i predict that you will have a new username, and be here saying just you wait in another 5yrs it will be mainstream lol.
Talk about dodging the question. Forget about me. Where will VR be in 5 years?
Lol ... VR is a fad, anyone denying it is just being delusional.
Where's the evidence for it being a fad? Please do tell.
I didn't dodge the question, it was in my comment, in 5yrs you will say that in 5yrs it will be mainstream, so in 5yrs from now it will either be dead or still niche.
So are you saying that in 5yrs VR will be mainstream?
@darthbuzzard: Being an irrelevant gimmick is the only evidence you need.
So basically, you've got nothing. Figures.
Ingenious nah, delusional yep lol.

No. VR gaming will be mainstream in 7-8 years. That's what I will stick with.
@darthbuzzard: Ah talk about shilling something you have no confidence in, we're done as you've been exposed as a fraud lol.
I never said VR was a fad, or dead, I said it wasn't ready for prime time. Most VR games are either normal games, just with a free-look option tied to the headset, or they're barely good enough to be considered a tech demo. And the reason for this is few developers are willing to invest in a complete VR-only game because the market for this just isn't very large. There simply isn't enough people with VR setups at home, even fewer with stand-up room to use them. So it's a lot of cost to develop something that'll never sell much.
VR would have to get better than it is now, but also it's going to have to get a lot cheaper to put more units into more households to make it a viable system to develop for. Until prices on VR units come WAY down, currently looking at $1k+ for current gen stuff, it's just never going to be a big target for development.
@darthbuzzard: Being an irrelevant gimmick is the only evidence you need.
So basically, you've got nothing. Figures.
No ... VR has nothing but bad ports, horror games (granted, those are cool) and a single well received exclusive game made by Valve ... and even that wasn't a system seller, so if Valve couldn't make VR popular and it's been 5 years since they started with this tech, then it's a gimmick ... irrelevant.
What else do you want to add ? That we should wait ? sure, let's wait another 5 years if you want. By the way, hoy many VR games were announced for PS5 and Series X ?
Cool. So what are your predictions for the next 5 years if you're so confident?

Perhaps an optimistic estimate, but it will become far more mainstream as technology inevitably evolves.
It's wholeheartedly taken for granted now to the point children throw them around as an inconsequential lump of plastic.
However, at one point cell phones were an expensive luxury designed for Patrick Bateman chads checking themselves out in the mirror as they penetrated upper class prostitutes in cocaine fueled sex orgies, too good to use pay phones, a sign of status over practicality feeding into a cynical self-gratifying perception of being above the rabble.
That's what VR is right now, many people do not see the virtue but merely a gimmick displaying wealth, in turn creating a tide of resentment, pacifying potential objectivity with toxicity.
Very sad.

Most VR ports are the definitive version. Don't believe me? Check all reviews/feedback for the following: Hellblade, Wipeout, Tetris Effect, Rez Infinite, Alien Isolation, RE7, Thumper, Elite Dangerous.
People have chosen: they prefer VR for those games.
And VR has more than Alyx.

I have full confidence in this timeline. I never claimed it would be mainstream in 5 years. I said what do you think would happen in 5?
@uninspiredcup: VR's been around for decades, and you only have average devs developing average games, but you know this, so do all the other VR crazies in this thread.
If Sony's indoctrinated fanbase aren't buying them (and they buy anything from Sony) then its niche and will stay that way at best. VR is best used outside of gaming as educational tools and porn.
Again you know this, just be happy that every now & then a AAA dev throws you guys a bone.
The gatekeeping in here is impressive. Can't have other people enjoying something you don't, apparently.
Personally I love the different experience VR brings to the table and when done properly there isn't any other type of gaming that comes close to engrossing you in the experience. Looking forward to the next generation of VR and the likes of the quest 2 make it very affordable now.
I've got a reverb g2 on order which will transform my sim racing experience and looking forward to flight sim supporting it soon also.
@madsnakehhh: in what world isn’t alyx a system seller??? Damn index has been on back order ever since the game was announced and to this day you are still looking at a 8+ week wait if you buy one...
@netracing: Who said anyone couldn't enjoy it? the argument is that it will stay niche and won't become mainstream, if you enjoy it then more power to you, but lets not pretend it will become popular enough to become mainstream.

It's crazy to think most kids these days don't know that telephone booths existed. But back on topic that is a perfect comparison of what VR is now to the way mobile phones were back in the day.
5 years and still never took off?
ummm..its dead jim.
then why are sales climbing and not sinking? how can something be dead and rise in numbers? its not slowing down either in 2020 is the highest selling rate for vr as well.
like saying 4k tv are dead because it took so long to get in to homes. expensive tech always has a slow start.
Ingenious nah, delusional yep lol.

because he doesn't get 2020 has sold the most for vr headsets. plus its not xbox yet.
once it does he will be all over it. forza in vr would be awesome.
how can he be a driving game fan and not want vr?
if the psvr 2 comes in at a cheaper price point as the first one its going to be huge.
plus once games get to were res 7 and no man sky and hitman were the game can be played either tv or vr will also be huge.
once games have a vr option then it will be bigger.

Not really. It's a true statement to say "there has been such a thing as VR" but modern VR is in many ways the first "real" VR experience and we didn't see that until 2016 with the release of the first consumer versions of the Rift and the Vive. The stuff that came before that could barely be called VR by current standards.
I've owned the Oculus DK2, CV1, Go, and Quest, the Vive and Vive Pro (with wireless), the Samsung Odyssey and Odyssey+, and the Valve Index. My current setup is I have the Valve Index running into my main viewing/workout space hanging by a hook in the ceiling, and I also have the Vive Pro Wireless set up in the same room. I use the Quest for standalone and PC VR games when I'm travelling. The Odyssey + stays in my office where I use it for seated games like Elite Dangerous. All the rest of the headsets mentioned I've sold or given away as I've traded up for newer hardware. I'm a huge proponent of VR. I think it's one of the most innovative things to happen to gaming possibly in my lifetime.
That said, I've also been pretty clear over the years that I don't see it replacing conventional gaming... ever. I think it can be strong and semi-niche at the same time. I view VR as like force feedback steering wheel and HOTAS setups (which I also have). There will always be an enthusiast audience for this stuff, but it scratches a different itch (so to speak). Some nights I play all VR games for hours, other nights I just want to chill on the couch and slash some Mongol hordes while I watch TV in the background.
ingenious people? TC has a homer simpson avatar and his handle is "what a failure" one of the dumbest posters on the internet.
this is your ingenious VR supporters? lol

Question Dodger!
I know the answer flashed across your brain, even for a millisecond. VR will grow. You know it, I know it, we all know it. It has already grown, not shrank or stagnated or hit a wall, so it's obvious why you won't answer.
When you play Half Life Alyx or Lone Echo or Astro Bot, or see high quality NextVR videos which John Carmack called "breathtaking" (NextVR bought by Apple recently so it almost points to a certainty VR is gonna explode even more), or see how social VR apps are getting very popular (everyone has heard of VRChat at least, even if they haven't tried it)....you're going to have a rough time with your previous bread-stale arguments that VR is dead or a fad. You probably need to go back to the dictionary and relearn what dead and fad means. Or apologize for being wrong.
