Retail sales of Tomb Raider have failed to hit their mark with Square Enix, they reported the game sold 3.4 million units. This goes along with hitman Absolution failing to reach its mark with 3.6 million and Sleeping Dogs which only sold 1.75 million copies. These sales however do not count DD.

http://uk.gamespot.com/news/tomb-raider-fails-to-reach-sales-target-6405929

I don't know about you but I would have thought 3.4 million retail sales was a lot. And when you add in DD it would be a lto more I'd imagine especially since a lot of PC players go DD only for games. But this does coincide with the news of SE having considerable losses as of late, kind of sad really as they publish some damn fine games and all 3 of these have had excellent PC ports too

Sales will pick up around the Steam summer Sales. The last few sales have seen a massive boost to Square's games.

I mean retail sales are mainly from consoles I'd imagine as that's still heavily dominated by retail only. But a tonne of PC players bought the game and it was DD so why not include those sales too? :? is there something I'm missing?

I guess if you're not making as much as CoD or other big name franchises, you're not doing well. Those numbers seemed pretty darn fine IMO

Those are great sales especially for Absolution which sucked Donkey D!ck. They should be more realistic, a reboot isn't going to sell 7 million at the end of a console cycle.

I bought HMA and SD... Both great games.

I didn't buy Tomb Raider yet because I got to many games and it's not worth the price ATM for me to buy.

Still they sold over 1 million units. I don't see how that's bad at all.

Not the devs, it's publishers expecting too much. 3+ million retail sales is damn fine in my books. If all of those were $60 then that's a lot of money.

Easy to understand why SE is in trouble. Their management must have lost their touch to reality if they aren't happy with games selling over 3 million.

it kills me you can  sell millions of units and not make enough money to keep your company afloat.

the days of the big blockbuster games are numbered.

heartbreaking.

it feels like all that will be left someday are arcade type titles, phone games and little indie games that come out of nowhere to get a following.

I don't think the AAA video game model is flawed so much as the model that only sales in the launch window matter. Companies need to find ways to give their games longer legs. Paid DLC, online pass, etc. do not help.

What the hell was their projected target?!? 3.4 million sales is pretty strong for a reboot, that is at least 100 million coming to these guys, there is no way the budget was over that. I'm guessing that Square thought the game was going to move like 5 million or something like that.

Completely overdramatic. Sales falling short of expecatations does not automatically imply this. Square are in trouble, ofcourse they damand high numbers. But Square have been pretty poor for years now game wise. Old giants die, new ones are born.... pleanty of other successful giants still in operation, Nobody wants linear flashy JRPGs... they want older style JRPGs with alot of content... not this crap new direction they took.

The game's been out 2 weeks, what short-sighted nonesense.

If publishers keep this up, they'll fall in the same pit as hollywood where a film has to make a profit on opening weekend or else its a disaster.

You couldn't watch a prime time show on cable tv over the time of the launch and not see a Tomb Raider ad. I think the advertising budget was enormous for this game, and the sales just didn't stack up. It's ridiculous to me, though, that a game that hasn't even been out for a month is already a failure. People have adjusted the price point they are willing to pay for video games. The game will sell very well as soon as it goes on sale, and we will never hear about the sales figures or whether or not expectations were met because the only sales that really matter are the sales at release. It's a very flawed, broken model that is not going to survive much longer.

Even though it might have been what I consider a slightly above average game, it will be all but forgotten in a year. I am fine with it coming up short. Eventually, these studios will realize that they need to deliver something fresh. Not just take a popular franchise, make the gameplay similar to another successful franchise, put it on the market, and expect it to sell like hot cakes.

I would have gotten it, unfortunately I didn't since I'm in the process of selling my console games and systems because I'm moving and it's way too much to take with me, and I can get a good deal of money from them and I kind of need that too. Otherwise I'd totally jumped all over this.

With the likes of Assassin's Creed, Battlefield, Call of Duty, and the like selling 10+ million sales per entry....it makes shareholders force public publishers to target high...very high. I much highly prefer private companies for the video game industry. All these shareholder pressures is a pain to go through for higher capital investment.

What's it say when Tomb Raider sales 3.4 Million in a month and dvelopers and publishers are not happy with the numbers? That is crazy.
Hopefully the cost to make games on the PS4 / 720 are about the same as the PS3 / 360 or we are gonna start getting less and less games on the shelf and fewer exclusives, original content.
There just isn't anyway Tomb Raider was not a nice payday selling that many units in a month. My guess is Square Enix was banking on Tomb Raider and Hitman to pick up the slack of their crapy Japanese made games.

Shareholders, expectations, and short time are the reasons for fairly excessive numbers to look like a failure.

But this doesn't count DD sales, whch I never understand why they only count retail

Steam not releasing its sales figures being one part of it.

But surely the developers make a cut of any digital sales and hence its safe to assume (yes i know, make an ass of u and me) they have some sort of record regarding digital sales.

You'd think they'd have some idea, but maybe Valve doesn't pay them/give them figures until the end of the month. Honestly, who knows?

I really don't understand what these publishers are expecting... none of these franchises are big to come anywhere near CoD sales numbers.

Tomb Raider was released less than a month ago and it sold 3.4 million, which is a signifficant improvement over Underworld, as far as I know. I'd honestly like to see what number were they targetting, because this whole thing seems silly!

That seems kind of asinine, because it seems like the publishers would be required to report those sales to their shareholders.

Yeah, I have no idea. Still, 3.4 million is nothing to sneeze at. You have to wonder how many copies they thought they were gonna move, and how much the MP cost to develop. Admittedly, I haven't bought Tomb Raider or Absolution yet, but I'mma pick it 'em down the line. I've played Tomb Raider, and it's very good.

Yeah, I'd love to see the budgets for those games, because if 3.4 million sales for TR isn't enough or is barely enough to break even, something's very wrong with the industry. Such model won't be able to maintain itself for long.

Xbox did its part.  Probably sold more than pc and ps3 combined.
