The last game I remember that decided to do open world survival horror /action adventure - let alone only title - that I can think of, was Alan Wake.
And well.... Its no longer open world.
I wouldn't be worried with the platforming and 'Tomb Raiding', I think the developers will still take this to heart, as exploration still seems to be at the games core.

Survival horror is really just a title for the premise. Platforming and open world is basically Assassin's Creed. I guess since AC's platforming made Tomb Raider's obsolete, TR has to step up to the plate. If this new TR is all platforming and combat though, it's going to reek of AC.
I hope the tombs mentioned have some pretty hardout puzzles to solve because I think that would truly turn TR into its own thing.
I would say I have faith in Crystal Dynamics, in fact, I do, but their first foray into the TR franchise turned the TR into a shooter. Legend kinda sucked as a TR game, and unfortunately was a mediocre action game too.
But yeah, platforming and puzzles make TR. Play TR: Anniversary. It may have to compete with Underworld as the best TR game, but it's definitely the most purest. While there's an imminent sense of danger from wildlife and supernatural creatures, they are few and far between, not to mention brief.
I hope CD would look at Anniversary, and try convert that experience for the sandbox. Tomb raiding in an open world? Sounds pretty damn awesome to me :D.
Actually, I wouldn't mind a compromise of survival horror in the jungle, and puzzling/platforming in the tombs. Now *that* would be a freakin' awesome game.
You do have a point it could be open world platforming such as AC however I think the approach will be dramatically different. AC was less about exploration (from what is being hinted) and survival, and more about fast fluid mobility, navigation and evasion.Saying that I wouldn't be surprised if the two have similarities, then again pacing and the very basics of the platforming mechanics can be quite distinctive in difference - who knows.
Though judging by the setting the new TR seems to be much more focused on the wildlife and supernatural, which for better or worse - could be more frequent in encountering certain enemies - though that's just me speculating.
I kind of think it'll be; more open world exploration, with sub 'levels' (or tombs) scattered for the player to enter and progress through - which will be more traditional TR stuff, whereas the open world might be more survival action combined with platforming - pretty much what you said in your last paragraph, and pretty much why i'm quite interested in it - as there really isnt anything else like that.
I can see why people wouldn't like a change in direction, but personally I think this could be great for the franchise if it works on the strengths of the previous games while introducing a new design structure perhaps.
