Original Tomb Raider was about adventure. Puzzles, dinosaur, mummies, interesting locations and finding treasure.

Reboot Tomb Raider is about killing peoples and about surviving. It´s very modern. People are everywhere, no more alone adventure in unknown world. More like Uncharted.

Looks like sequel also about killing peoples than monsters.

What it was before:

Now:

Why we need Uncharted remake when we already have Uncharted?

Kinda agree with you. The new Tomb Raider was a decent game but they shouldn't forget their roots and what made this franchise so lovable(yes, except for the boobs).

It's a reboot. That's what reboots tend to do.

People wanted an Uncharted like game and they didn't have PS consoles. The new reboot Crystal even hired a Sony Santa Monica director to aid in the game's direction and development.

Yes, but the game showed way more potential than any Uncharted game does. I'd still rather play UC2 than Tomb Raider, but if they can nail the optional tombs next time and actually make them more elaborate puzzles (vs the shitty ones in Uncharted), actually make the hunting important as a survival element (kind of like eating snakes in Snake Eater), and focus more on the open predator like combat, and tone the **** down on the shitty set pieces they can legit one of the best action-adventure games out there.

Purely mechanical standpoints the gunplay in TR was solid, the movement was better by virtue of not being a sticky cover shooter like UC/Gears, and the game already had more open scenarios than UC ever did. The story is shit, but who cares they actually have the potential to kill it from a gameplay standpoint. Only thing that worries me is that it being a cross gen game killed any chance of them taking that game to the next level.

I would have much preferred something closer to the originals too :( Oh well, I suppose that would be considered taking a chance by modern publishing overlords.

I didn't care for the new one. Felt unfocused, as if it didn't know what kind of game it wanted to be. Imo it lacked the character of the original. The first two games had a sense of thrill to them--you never really knew what was coming. I really enjoyed the adventure/puzzle aspect of them. You could walk into a room and stair for a minute and think to yourself, "well there's a cave up there, how do I get up there." The goal of the puzzles was mostly already visible, but putting the pieces together was the challenge. And THEN there was the mystery of what lies afterwards--the games had an almost survival-horror aspect to them, in a sense.

...I only really enjoyed the first two, though. Played them on the pc and boy were they razor sharp at the time.

Funny how you don't mention how the series was stagnating and shit before the reboot. So basically, nothing is to ever change once it comes out. Pretty boring world you want there

I'll probably be one of the few that agrees with you. The heart of the game was stripped. People look at the title and characters, but what if Street Fighter took on the mold of Streets of Rage--would it still be street fighter just because of the license?

For once, TC is right. Tomb Raider used to have an identity, used to have a heart. TR reboot was one of the most generic, soulless, tick-box games I've ever had the displeasure to play. Utterly forgettable.

I managed to stick it out all the way to the end. At which point I picked up a few parts in order to max out some things then removed the disc and haven't touched it since. Literally nothing about it to bring me back. One of the few games that's happened; LA Noire and The Evil Within are also among that esteemed number.

I have to agree with the TC. Sadly, it's understanable why.

Tomb Raider was dying and turning it into a cover based shooter with some platforming elements and go all cinematic saved it.

It's extremely unlikely, almost impossible, that the older puzzle tombs will ever return. Even core gamers, the large segment who buys these games, don't want to get stuck on a puzzle, like the original 3 had.

However, i still consider the side tombs in TB2013 an insult. Despite the fact that they're optinal, they're fucking easy, even for a monkey. It's a 1 trick poney. But the older games had their puzzle fused into the normal level design. Having to play side content to have those fells wrong imo.

Eh, if Rise of the Tomb Raider goes back to the vibe of exploring exotic, strange locations and keeps the quality of the platforming, i'll be fine with it. And i better see weird shit. I mean the first game had dinossaurs because "**** it why not?".

I liked the reboot a lot. It was a great game but there were some places where it went way too far;

1. The game was extremely easy.

2. No exploration, just set pieces.

3. Magic vision that highlights everything important in modern games needs to die already.

4. Story was nothing special but I can forgive them for that because the main purpose of the story was to show Lara becoming stronger and brave and it achieved that perfectly.

5. Leaked prototype footage showed some really cool ideas but those weren't implemented in the game.

Here's what I want from new Tomb Raider.

1. More challenging.

2. More tombs and exploration.

3. Implementation of some of the ideas from prototype, some of which were also present in old games (exploration, side kick, horse riding or vehicles, giant bosses, different ways to deal with different enemies etc).

4. Dark and complex storyline.

5. No more magic vision.

6. More gadgets.

7. More and complex puzzle solving.

They shouldn't copy Uncharted, which has always been a roller coaster ride. Tomb Raider is way more than that and it should be.

What's even worse was that one of the tombs was a pre-order bonus.

They knew they were bad.

I bought both the PSX version and the PC version of Tomb Raider. The PSX version was pretty fluid although it was somewhat blurry. The PC version had two modes: lo-res (VGA) and hi-res (SVGA). The lo-res mode ran fine. But, it was a pixelated mess, far worse than the PSX version. The hi-res mode looked great. But, it was very laggy. You have to remember Tomb Raider released before 3D acceleration started catching on.

3dfx was the best thing that ever happened to Tomb Raider PC. Overnight, the Glide-accelerated Tomb raider kicked all other versions to the curb.

As for the Reboot, I haven't bought it yet because I heard it was very similar to the Uncharted games which I already have. It's one of the games I'll get to on the PC.

The only problem with the reboot is the lack of supernatural shit. There is some, but it was never compelling.

I believe it would. It may not be an enjoyable change, but the creators have the right to define what they create. We have the right to buy/not buy.

I gave up on LA Noire when I realised that none of my inputs actually affected the outcome of the game, and when I figured out the identity of the killer during one of the murder missions when it wouldn't let me follow up on something the dude had said. Seriously shoddy.

It was also a dead franchise before the reboot. Regardless of your preference rebooting it and making it more casual friendly was a smart move.

I actually prefered the TR reboot to UC2, each to their own I guess... you couldn't get away with making a game as tunnel visioned as the originals these days and that's a good thing, I loved them at the time but they had more than their fair share of issues.

I thought it was better than uncharted and one one the best games that came out that year. Sure it was a reboot for the modern era of gamers but it was well done imo.

That's why Sony changed their hardware to be more like the Xbox 360. lol!! No more Emotion Engine or Cell. No more taking 2 years to try to figure out Sony crazy hardware and software tools. Gotta love clueless trolls though.

As for the Tomb Raider reboot, I guess people forget that after the 3rd Tomb Raider the series was taking a massive dive into mediocrity. They weren't getting much better. This is why they decided to make some changes to the format. There's no reason they can't include both formats into one game though.

Tomb Raider as a franchise had become less and less loved/prominent as time went on, and had the latest been a mere continuation of the series it would have fallen under the radar and long been forgotten.

Instead they created a much loved game which, whilst not being identically sticking to the series formula, was in spirit the same genre, and it was well received. I loved the fleshed out character and the setting, and the HD new gen makeover was stunning too.

A few internet based whiners cannot change the fact that it was the change of direction which created interest in the game, although I would welcome some of the suggestions by @Cloud_imperium.

Some people bemoan the direction Resident Evil took with 4, forgetting the lame duck PS2 titles which almost killed off the series completely. They are doing the same with Tomb Raider.

I totally agree, as much as the new Tomb Raider was a Decent enough game, I think they relied way to much on human intervention, when the original Tomb Raiders were alot more about puzzles and Exploration and really I think they need to do that, to set it apart from Uncharted, It would be nice to have a game where the whole purpose was to find a lost treasure and not much human enemies and a lot more puzzles would really appeal more to a wider audience.

I really wished there were hard puzzles in the reboot. There isn't a reason to replay the reboot now because if you want to shoot people there are other games that do that better. You can go back to any tomb raider game, or lara croft game, and enjoy some crazy puzzles but with this game the only thing you have to look forward to is watching Lara writh in agony.
