offline and online. Let's rank them

1. Secret of Mana (SNES game, offline game, but best ever)

2. Starcraft (including brood war)

3. Street Fighter II (took video game competition to whole new level at the time)

4. Counter-Strike

5. WoW (so far, best MMO)

6. Guild Wars (excellent job masking itself to look like MMORPG. Currently best online RPG *multiplayer-wise)

7. Double Dragon. (I hope I don't need to explain why this was so great. Do kids even know Double Dragon?)

8. Gauntlet II.

9. Diablo 2 (I just couldn't allow myself to not include all 3 Blizzard franchise when talking about multi-player)

10. Wiisports

I knew Halo fanboys will complain lol.

Wiisports is in there because it brings entire family together and it broke many grounds.

thought about putting Halo 2 in top 10 but I just thought Wiisports do something really special so that's that.

Also, I only put 1 MMORPG there which is WoW. I put 2 online RPG there which is Guild Wars and Diablo 2

Secret of Mana have given the players to go on a journey together with a friend. It was an adventure, not just mindless grinding. No one even to this day was able to recreate that kind of multi-player experience which is why it is on the top.

And surely, that's a joke, right? When you say that Counter Strike is better than Unreal, Halo and Battlefield. You can't actually be serious.

respective to the time period when it came out? Yes Counter-Strike > Unreal, Battlefield, Quake, and Halo.

First I'd put Doom, Goldeneye, and Perfect Dark over Halo.

I put Counter-Strike up there because it really changed the idea of mods at that time. No mods has been that successful. So successful that it became stand-alone title and brought many people uninterested in FPS genre to play the game. As multi-player impact goes I thought it was big.

Goldeneye, Doom and all I think they were great too and had large impact, but I simply think those games on my top 10 list had bigger impact and quality. Also that's my list. If you aren't satisfied with my list make your own. This thread was created to see what everyone thinks top 10 multi-player games are.

Number one has to be Battlefield 2, and you know, I hate putting it there because the game just doesn't work most of the time...but when it did work for me and my friends to get online and play with each other, the squad-based gameplay was just unbeatable. If EA hadn't rushed the game out the door and messed the whole thing up with patch after patch, this game would surely be a no-brainer for everyone in my opinion. If only it would let me play online with my friends whenever I wanted to, instead of barraging me with endless errors, lag issues, and bad servers...not to mention an interface that could probably work as a template for what navigating through hell's servers would be like.

Number two is probably Super Smash Bros. Melee. The memories I have of that game will probably never go away, and it's only a video game. I remember everyone I knew had a Gamecube and this game, so it was no problem setting up a game of four players. It's perfect for parties and even today, whenever I go to a friend's house it's a good bet we'll play a game or two of this one.

Number three is Counter-Strike. Counter-Strike is probably the most inexplicably addictive multiplayer game ever created. I don't even know why the game is so addictive, but a good guess would probably be the amazingly accurate shooting system that was created for the game. A headshot in this game is about as satisfying as a headshot will ever get.

Number four is World of Warcraft. People get lost in this game. Their outside lives completely ignored in favor of playing and levelling every single character in the game. Completing instances in a raid is always an amazing experience.

Number five is Unreal Tournament 2004. This is the pinnacle of mindless fun. Frag after frag after frag it just never got old.

Only did five because of the descriptions...and the fact that these, to me, are pretty much the only ones noteworth enough to put in a list.

O really?

If it sucked so much, why were kids all over arcades to play Street Fighter II? Why were there more co-op game during SNES time than late 90s and early 2000?

Thanks to online becoming more main-stream, things are picking up again in multi-player, but when gaming went 3D and complicating cameras to have multi-player aspect in games, gaming industry in general outside of PC was lacking multi-player aspect.

Although it may not be online, NES and SNES had some great multi-player experience.

I'm in mid 20s. I found Wiisports great.

Playing that game with my parents and my girl friend and bunch of my drunken friends. I've not experienced gaming with such variety of people around me, and how easily it came bring different people into gaming even the ones who aren't interested. I found that pretty amazing.

Only other games I could've experienced with all types of people like that before was board games like monopoly.

But of all time? On a trip, one of my coworkers bought a Wii. It was great, you could sit back and have a couple of beers and play a number of fun mini-games. I had a good time, but not as much fun as stomping childhood friends at mortal combat, 007, or any of the NES/Genesis games that people used to -for lack of a better word- "train" themselves to play well. On the Wii, skill WAS involved, but there is no way it's on par with the classics.

I do like classic games which is why so many of them made on my list, but Wiisports brings so many different types of people, and that alone I think is great. Like Monopoly, it's not about skills but the fact how it brings people together I think is quite impressive and make it fun to play with just about anyone you know.

My 10 will be online games only, in no particular order:
