OPs list is a victim of hype. He obviously just based them off their payed off scores.

Because any game with high scores was paid for.

Civilization IV
Team Fortress 2
probably SMG 1 and 2 but I've never played them so I can't be sure.
probably Portal 2 but obviously I haven't played it yet but I think that it isn't ridiculous to think that it might become a classic since our own experiences with other Vavle single player games.
maybe CoD4 but theres a lot of fans of other games in the series. (my favorite is CoD1 and especially it's expansion)
1. Super Mario Galaxy 2
2. The World Ends With You
3. God Of War III
4. ( when it's out ) Kingdom Hearts BBS ! :P
-Call of Duty 4. It really changed the playing field for shooters wtih it's modern setting, custom classes and perks, and there were alot of avid players.
-Wii Sports. It's deffinetely not all that but alot of people played it and alot of the casual crowd bought the Wii for it. It's arguably what jump started the Wii craze. It wasn't ground breaking but a ton of people played it, had fun and talked about it, like Duck Hunt.
-Portal. Come on, it's the gaming equivalent of Ghost Busters. Full of memorable quotes and very funny.
-Gears of War. It really pushed the gitty atmosphere and ultra violence you see in a lot of shooters today. It really brought cover based shooters to light. The graphics blew people's minds when it first came out, it was the 360's killer app at the time and was the undisputed king of Live till Halo 3 came out.
-Guitar Hero III. The climax of the music game fad. Many will agree it's not the best but it was the best selling one, it's the most played one. Remember all those vids of guys playing Dragon Force on the highest difficulty?

MGS4
GTA4

lets get real heavy rain wont be a classic, its a choose your own adventure with a lame story full of plot holes. Mass Effect series however are classics for sure
1) World of Warcraft - With more than 10 million players. The biggest, most profitable game ever. It's changed the gaming landscape forever.
2) Portal and/or Braid - Both games started a new trend and became the perfect examples of alternatives to long, big, high cost games. Both are fairly short, they are both low cost and both celebrated for having really clever puzzles combined with interesting story and atmosphere. They both really started the current wave of indie games being published through large publishing networks (Xbox Live, PSN and STEAM).
3) SMG or SMG 2 - It sounds like the second one is the better game, but the first was the original. But one of them deserves a spot on the list.
4) CoD4 - It started the wave we're seeing of 'modern' shooters. Where everyone else appeared to be stuck in WW2, it was also did a lot to re-define online game play with its persistent leveling system.
5) Guitar Hero 1/2/3 or Rock Band 1/2. I don't really know these so I'm not sure which one would become the classic. But it seems clear to me that they've helped define this generation. More than any other group of games they've pushed the peripheral market to become integrated into games; they've pushed gaming to become social activities outside the traditional mutliplayer settings.
6) The Sims 1/2/3. The Sims have helped breach the barriers between 'typical' gamers, they've become an iconic game title that generally doesn't appeal to traditional gamers. They game play, the setting and the whole idea of the game is highly original.
7) Wii sports. It's really the Wii more than Wii sports that deserve to be on the list but whatever. The concept of the Wii, both in the very broad market appeal, the idea of a console as being something healthy as opposed to begin considered unhealthy is very unique.
8) GTA4 For taking the storytelling of GTA:SA so much further. The game set a new standard of voice acting in games and storytelling. Probably the first (but far from the last) game of this gen where there was a feeling of 'wow this could be a blockbuster Hollywood movie.
 Oh lawdy.... Anyway I like the list TC. Mass Effect 2 is a common choice, and I'd kinda have to agree, though I think Bioware will continue to 1-up it, while Baldur's Gate will always be THE classic. Excellent game though, just one of those ones I see people saying "Good then but not anymore" in 15 years. Uncharted 2 is one of my favorite games, but I can see people looking back on it and seeing it as just another shooter. It's one of my 5 favorites this gen, but I don't see it. For me, I'd say Super Mario Galaxy 2 (1 will be remembered as great but not as good), Demon's Souls (for being fresh), Red Dead Redemption, Metal Gar Solid 4 (I'll admit it wasn't a 10/10 for me, but it's a great game that should be remembered for concluding MGS), and Bioshock (haven't even played, but the atmosphere in it looks amazing and it'll be remembered). No to demon's souls. and MGS4 was pretty lame. L4D will be a classic

The only way games can stay classic is a good story. For example, what games are classics from a decade ago? Games like FF and MGS which rely heavily on story. This is because people will not remember games for anything else like graphics or gameplay because these things can always be done better. So from this gen we look at games like MGS4 as classics.gamebreakerz__Dead wrong. SF2 is a classic and it has no story. FF7 is a classic yet it has one of the dumbest stories ever. Super Mario World 3 story is crap and it is prob the best game EVER.

So from this gen we look at games like MGS4 as classics.gamebreakerz__tetris, super mario brothers/ duckhunt, sonic, metroid, mortal combat, soulcalibur, tekken, resident evil, tony hawk games... you know what screw making a list any TBS, RTS, fighter, sports game(including racing), platformers and most widely held shooters have no story or a thin story at best. fundamentals make a classic game, visuals and story lines without great fundamentals makes a fad. chrono trigger and FF3(6) have a good story but if the game mechanics were not top notch then the games would never have become so iconic. to sum things up games are to be played and that play is what judges a game in the long run, not its story
Every generation has its classics, in the '90 there was the Ocarina of Time, Mario64, Planescape Torment, Starcraft, and Metal Gear Solid. From 2000-2005 there was Halo 2, Resident Evil 4, Half Life 2, KOTR, and God of War. So What games will we remember as this generations classics?
I will start by saying(in no order)
1. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (extremely fun gameplay that reminded us why we play games in the first place)
2. Metal Gear Solid 4 (concluded the epic MGS franchise with a bang, and amazing plot)
3. Uncharted 2 (pushed new boundaries for console graphics while maintaining an enjoyable storyline and fun gameplay mechanics)
4. Demon Souls (Extremely difficult for a generation of ridiculously easy games, yet so so satisfying and entertaining)
5. Bioshock (Gorgeous art style and showed the FPS genre that you CAN make a shooter with a solid storyline with epic twists)
Crispenz
SuBioshock and SMG2 are certainly good choices. Especially Bioshock, the atmosphere of that game was so perfect. UC2 and MGS4 I can buy (thing is remember that visuals don't make a classic, and part of each of their successes came on superb visuals. But they do have excellent gameplay and storyline, each of them.
But Demon's Souls will be forgotten about, heck it's mostly been forgotten already. How many people bought that game, under a million? People need to have played a game for it to be a classic. Replace that with Halo 3 (really the ultimate party shooter, seamless XBL integration, Forge, Theater, Custom games, split screen competitive online letting you play a FPS with friends in a way that simply has no match to this date). I didn';t even have an xbox until 2009, and yet I had so many amazing Halo memories from playing with friends.
Either GTA4 or RDR have decent shot at being somewhat classics, they are both such polished games. it depends on whether or not future generations improve on the sandbox forumula presented by GTA. If they can, it may well be forgotten as better versions pop up.
Gears of War might be remembered as a classic, but the 3rd person cover shooter genre that it basically spawned (don't get me wrong, it existed before Gears, but Gears refined and perfected it), and now it is just standard for TPS to basically imitate gears, from ME2, UC2, and etc. So as games are using Gears gameplay, it might seem dated by next gen.,
And finally World of Warcraft and the orange Box. WoW for being so successful that soooooo many people try and emulate it's success with WoW clones, and just being a general pop phenomenom. The Orange Box was just such an amazing piece of gaming, especially Portal. The atmosphere and creativity in Portal will not become dated.
Heavy Rain and SMG2 (about 70 stars in) are both my favorite games this gen. Both are beyond amazing.lets get real heavy rain wont be a classic, its a choose your own adventure with a lame story full of plot holes. Mass Effect series however are classics for sure

Honestly I haven't felt that many games have been really amazing. Most were sequels or somethingMr_CumberdaleYEah, kinda like last gen. And the gen before that, and the gen before that and so on. Like I said, I don't get why people pretend sequels didn't dominate till now. It's been like this for most of gaming. I mean look at Pokemon, Mario and Zelda. They've been making sequels for the longest time. I'd argue new IPs have been prominant this gen than last.
I like your list except I do not agree with you are MGS4 (Lackluster title IMO, weakest of the MGS titles) and Bioshock (Deus Ex, System Shock 1,2, Half Life titles already proved you can have a FPS title with decent stories). I also would like to add the Stalker titles, Portal, Bayonetta (best action game since Ninja Gaiden Black), Alan Wake (has the same charm the Max Payne games had on me) to the list.Every generation has its classics, in the '90 there was the Ocarina of Time, Mario64, Planescape Torment, Starcraft, and Metal Gear Solid. I agree with no to demon souls, MGS4 will be a classic? L4D? Lol, don't get me started on bashing that game Realistically Classics would be Mass Effect Series Uncharted Series MGS4 Starcraft 2 Diablo 3No to demon's souls. and MGS4 was pretty lame. L4D will be a classic

The only two I'd agree with on that list are probably Super Mario Galaxy 2, for sure, and Uncharted 2. The problem with this gen is that so many of the games seems so similar that it's really hard to think of them as stand out classics that we will be talking about in the years to come.Every generation has its classics, in the '90 there was the Ocarina of Time, Mario64, Planescape Torment, Starcraft, and Metal Gear Solid. Super Mario Galaxy 1/2 (both for slightly different reasons but it's not evendebatablethat these are going to be clasics)
Portal (came out of left field and had great critical success and everyone who played it seemed to love it)
Wii Sports (not because it's the best game ever but because it defined a generation)
Uncharted 2 (one of the best HD games this gen but truth be told it's just one of many great all-round HD games)
World of Goo (probably the most popular and critically acclaimed indy game this gen so I'm sure it will be talked about for years to come)
Probably not a perfect list but I think I'll go with those 5 for now.
Note: People choosing games that are not even released yet is just silly.
Metal Gear Solid 4 (what a conclusion to the amazing franchise)
LittleBigPlanet (the amazing level of creativity!)
The Last Guardian (certain to be, much like SOTC)
This has nothing to with opinions.
In no order.
MGS4
Mario Galaxy 2
Uncharted 2
These are the only ones so far thatI can see enduring. Two years ago I would have included Bioshock but that game hasn't stood the test of time. I feel like Mass Effect 2 might be a similar story but for now I'll list it alongside the others.
