Those aren't very compelling reasons to make me the gamer want to pay for it. I don't pay money to support Microsoft, I pay money to buy games and support developers who make games I like.foxhound_fox

Just lighten up a little bit and you will know what I mean.

That's 14 million gold and silver subscribers. They don't have 14 million people paying them $50 a year.

Nice try though.

Zhengi

Lets say there is 10M gold members, thats $500M a year.

Who's to say that that 10 million gold member figure is correct?  What if it was closer to 5 million gold members instead?  :)

MS should give us exact figures instead of combining the two.  If the install base is at 21 million, it could mean that those who don't pay for online gaming can range from 7 million to 16 million.

I think i read somewhere it is in the 8+ millions actually everyone who has a xbox 360 had to of at least bought a 1 month form there pocket.

What am I supposed to see exactly? I payed Microsoft for the hardware and am paying the developers and publishers for the software. I shouldn't have to pay Microsoft for something that every other console, PC and handheld offers for free.

There are 14M users for XBL this year, lets do the math, 14M x $50 = $700M, this is a bit of exaggerating so lets say it is between $400M to $500M annually.

1- Paying for online play makes MS recoup their losses much faster and easier, I mean $1B for extended warranty was too much for MS to handle.

2- Make better marketing, with $500M every year, throwing $10M for their games makes even average games sell which is better for developers we do care about.

3- Making it easy for MS to snatch exclusives from the competition.

4- Again, it is easier for them to slash their console prices.

5- makes the NXE free to download.

Sony should follow their footsteps with PSN.

credibilityzero

Please show me the proof that these areas are what MS uses their online fees for.  You have no proof that since MS charges for online they spend the money on these areas.

You have about as much proof as me saying that MS charges $50 a year because it cost that much to run the servers and pay the XBL worker therefore none of it goes towards other things.

TC, you're right with almost everything but you should have put both the pros and cons. Two or three more things, #1 it is M$ fault not yours to pay for for the extended warranty and #5: M$ announced it after Home (correct me if wrong) and if both were to be released on close dates and one for free while the other costs some fees then many people won't be happy. Ah, not to forget that we can get better services for free (PC?) when M$ should reserve some money to make dedicated servers for some famous 360 games like Gears and Halo I'm not bashing but wanted to share my opinion :)

Do you really think to run XBL they need $500M yearly?

IMO the only reason why those 14M GOLD XBL users paid for XBL GOLD is because theres no other option but to pay.

heck we would all accept it if it was for free.

All of those things benefits MS and not gamers. MS could still do all of that themselves without charging for XBL. I could understand if they were charging $50 annually for dedicated servers that they are running but that is not the case. You are basically paying them a fee so you can use your Internet connection. Don't get me wrong it is an amazing service but I am one of the people that do not care about the additional features. I just want to play games online.

Yes... because PS3 updates aren't free, are they? It's not like PS3 owners are going to get a free online avatar based community in a 3d environment called Home or anythingis it?

I've avoided paying Xbox LIVE ever since I bought an original Xbox, I'm going to get a wireless adapter for Christmas (because M$ were too stingy to include wireless built in) and Xbox LIVE for 2 reasons only: Gears 2 online and Left 4 Dead. XBL is hardly better, it's just I think those two games are worth paying £100 to play online (which is how much it will cost, excluding the cost of the games themselves).

Its just money, spend $4 less a month on something else (fast food etc.) and you have your xbox live all paid for. if you give up fast food, xbox live is more effective than wii fit :Pbirdman2111

You win.

Honestly that argument beats all of the thread creator's ones. I don't own a 360 but you make more sense than him, although I'm not even close to getting an xbox, much less xbox live.

Live is paid for and have made a profit before you pay them for their services. Commercials and licenses made sure of that.

I own both consoles and I gladly pay the $50/year for XBL. It's the superior service and I have a ton of friends on XBL.

PSN is getting better, but R2 is the only game I'm interested in playing on my PS3

While I don't really mind the $50 a year, its does seem to me a little bit of a rip off. I really think its time for MS to reduce the cost unless its going to do something revoutionary. I refuse to believe that it costs MS 10 mil a year to maintain XBL, and I'm sure they make a great deal more than that on it.

I can certainly agree here. I'm thinking sometime in 2009 that the fee will go to something like 19.99 a year - well at least I'm hoping that but it is tough for a company who's main goal is to make profits, then to voluntarily say umm, will settle for less though I think MS will do it in hopes of gaining much more market share. We shall see.

$4 or $50, it still dont beat Free. It's the people who makes the 2 services what it is, it has nothing to do with the content on them, they both have games and movies.

They do but 360 has a few more features, that are worth the money, I mean making a chat room, being able to just team up and go into any game a friend is in, those features are nice, not worth the 50 dollars but worth somethign

It's cute that you feel you have to search for reasons to justify your XBL membership. But I'm going to give you one reason why it isn't worth paying for:

Microsoft is capable of providing online for free.

So that terrible games get lots of publicity meaning loads of casuals buy it, rewarding the developers for a bad game? No thanks

3- Making it easy for MS to snatch exclusives from the competition.

It would be cheaper to buy the rival console and the game than to pay for xbox Live for 5 years

4- Again, it is easier for them to slash their console prices.

If im paying for xbox live, then I already have the console. Why would I buy another one just because its cheaper?

5- makes the NXE free to download.

NXE is part of Xbox Live. Xbox Live you pay for thus meaning you pay for NXE.

Sony should follow their footsteps with PSN.

No thankyou
