SONY: Total assets ▲ US$ 200 Billion (2009) 2 trillion y Total equity ▲ US$ 50 Billion (2009) Employees 180,500 (as of March 2008) MICROSOFT:Total assets ▲ US$ 72.793 billion (2008) Total equity ▲ US$ 36.286 billion (2008) Employees 89,809 in 105 countries (2008) (wikipedia MS,Sony) im tired of the fake market capital comparison.600pc

Sony (SNE) Market Cap. $26B

http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=sne&=

Microsoft (MSFT) Market Cap. $179B

http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=msft&=

That looks about 7x more than sony.

Nortel Market Cap once upon a time was at 300 BIILION now it worth less then 300 million. That value can fade away over night. Tangible assets don't. The intellectual property Sony owns in music and movies alone is worth more then MS.

Until ReactOS reaches stable build, MS is a monopoly in the laptop/desktop PC industry.

[QUOTE="Shafftehr"]If MS were to disappear today, the computer industry would be plunged into chaos - it's the cornerstone of the PC world, and the PC world as we know it would cease to exist without it. If Sony were to disappear today, there would be dozens of other hardware makers and movie studios there to take their place. MS has less in tangible assets, but has so much market capital, and makes so much more money, because it's simply a *way* more important and influential company.Espada12

Not really. OSX will just take over. The reason windows is successful is because it's simple, user friendly and has some idiot blocks built in. OSX is very close to windows so they will just get the entire market.

Due to Apple's lock-in hardware policies, MacOS X would NOT take over the PC world i.e. it doesn't lead a clone army/armada (i.e. ODM/OEM PC vendors).

You guys only know to fire bullets in the air,...................Sony's asset is double the assets of microsoft and apple together added. 1. Total asset is the only thing that counts..............that is what u hold with at the last. 2. Sony's have their listing on NYSE whereas Microsoft's have their listing on NASDAQ. 3. Sony's share are ADR ( American depositary receipt ) Stock , which is like facility provided to the companies of other nations to have their listing in american market. 4. As Sony's stock is a ADR therefore, definitely they r going to have less Market cap.....for investors........... 5. Microsoft has offered 60% of its shares to the investors ,..............if any one buy all the 60% share from all the investor...............he will have 60% stakes in Microsoft............though its impossible cause 60% is much much more in terms of money.........and also microsoft is having strong relationship with its investors 6. Sony's have offered only little above 30% which means that the company is strongly having the hold on its ownership. 7. Market Capitalization is total no of share issued by the company multiplied by current share price......this is the value of company (for investors)..........not the size of the company.

Which company has more money to spend? That's the important question. I'm not sure if the fact that Sony has a few billion bucks in TV's sitting in a warehouse is relevant.

Any one have any clue?

You know the price of the stock, and you can find out the book value per share. Price of the stock is the market value, book value per share is the accounting value, take that for what you will. No one knows what the true value of a company is, no one can predict the future.

Not to mention that these companies as a whole are in 2 different industries.

Assets are also subject to depreciation. You make no sense. Sony's market cap is only $26B. As such, their total approximate net worth is only $26B. You make no sense.

Oh, and I'd like you to take a long, hard look at the value of a dollar (a specie-less currency) and the price of the former specie that backed that dollar (gold). You might gain a greater appreciation of these concepts. Can you guess which medium held its value better? A dollar or gold? Gold or dollar? As it turns out, it's gold. Incredible stuff, eh? Could you go print me some gold, please?

That's the problem with our FIAT currency....Amirite?

yes delete this please! it shows how big sony really is.

This has everything to do with it. People think that sony is losing tremendous amounts of cash on the PS3 and are either going out of business or Shuttting down the gaming division. This shows that sony was enough resources to take more of a loss that microsoft could. which therefore keep sony in the gaming world and therefore continue making consoles. The PS3 and 360 don't make themselves, shouldn't we be interested in how the companies making them are doing?

And, we talk about sales so much here. If we can't talk about this then we shouldn't talk about sales either since it has nothing to do with the games themselves.

Third! you think Microsoft is behind all of the software and hardware of the PC world? No way. Apple will be first in line to grab up the market share and people will buy apples and run old versions of windows with parallels until the adjust. Then Linux will follow with it's free OS that can be installed on any PC. The PC world will flourish if MS were to disappear.

So why didn;'t sony just bite bullet earlier with price drops instead of waiting for so long.

You know since Sony has more assets or what ever.

I can understand some Cows are fired up about this, but this event is fairly premature if they think it will change things.

The only real significant thing about Gamescon when you think about is the long awaited price drop, not the PS3 Slim.

They tried to minimize their losses. Just because you can lose doesn't mean you want to.

It's called Linux. It's free, stable, efficient, and open-source. It's got second place in the server market and third place in the desktop OS market. It's largely created by neckbearded philanthropists, not corporate devils like Apple or MS.

PS3 slim is cheaper to produce, more efficient, and has 40 extra gigs of storage. It's also smaller, lighter, and has 30% less power consumption. TBH, I'd rather have 1 than my 60gig. But it's not as shiny, so it's worse? See PSP slim, PS2 slim, or DS Lite...all superior to their predecessors.

Well the question was what of MS disappeared. Apple is here yes but MS has way too much market share for them to be a real threat although the momentum is shifting slightly. The Mac being expensive thing has been debunked so many times it's odd seeing it anymore. Especially since they've dropped in price tremendously in the past few years. Under performing compared to what? a gaming machine. if so then you're right but in what other aspects does a dual Core I7 Xeon CPU ddr3 system under perform at? MS has proprietary formats also, WMA, WMV? that's why converters were made. There's a reason why apple doesn't allow installs on PC. It's like a game console. They make their software to run on a specific platform. No matter where you take OS X it'll work and it'll work well. I have a mac book at work that had tiger on it, then installed leopard and now it's using snow leopard and it gets faster all the time. I haven't seen that occur with an old PC. So it's either buy a mac from a reputable company like apple, or buy a linux PC from an up and coming linux PC distributor. You do not need a huge company to make innovative products. Example, Apple and the iPod. Apple came almost out of nowhere with it and now most of the population either has one or know 5 people who have one. Another example is Redhat. They introduced Linux to enterprises and is now being used on high end business servers as their main platform.

Macs are more expensive has been debunked? Funny, seems like it's confirmed every time I see a Fry's ad. I recently walked into my university bookstore where they had a Dell laptop and a desktop iMac with almost equal specs (laptop w/ slight edge) for, i swear to god the same price. A desktop for the same price as a laptop! Sorry, bro, but i've never seen any Apple product in my life with an equal price-performance ratio, you're gonna have to show me an example. Not to mention we're talking about pre-builts....you can build a far more valuable PC from spare bits, something you've never been able to do w/ a Mac due to their proprietary bullcrap....Apple products fail...hard
