Tretton: We removed BC to encourage people to buy more PS3 games

"The reduction reflects Sony's determination to spur more sales of the PlayStation 3, the Japanese electronics company's most important new product in years. Jack Tretton, president and chief executive officer of Sony's U.S. games division, acknowledged that the relatively high price of the PS3, which Sony has justified by including advanced technology such as a high-definition Blu-ray disc movie player, has been an impediment for many gamers.

"While we were incredibly excited about the technology in PS3 and while it was future-proofed to some degree, it was a bit ahead of its time," Mr. Tretton said in an interview. "The downside of all that technology was the price we had to offer it to consumer at retail. We knew $599 was going to be a challenge for some people based on traditional videogame pricing."

There's a catch to the lower price: The new $399 PlayStation model will not play games designed for the PlayStation 2, Sony's popular older game console. Mr. Tretton conceded that removing that capability, along with a few other features, isn't dramatically reducing Sony's cost of manufacturing the console but will instead encourage buyers of the entry-level PlayStation 3 to purchase more games designed specifically for the new system."

But even if it was true, what ps3 games are there? Warhawks online only, so thats a select crowd right there. Heavenly sword is a mess. Resistance is ok, but its aiming sucks. Without bc, my ps3 would rarely get touched.

Call it what you want. i think its smart. Should they have never talked BC up if they were to ditch it later? No. But pushing you console's owners into getting games made for that specific console is not a bad thing. Sony's biggest need right now is an install base that's spending money on new games.

But, haters will boost BC to godly needs and forget that most gamers don't keep old games. We'll see more whining and crying from those who seem to give a ****. Even though most who make this a big deal have no intentions on buying a PS3 anyway.

What a misguided statement you made here. So, doesn't the actual gameplay come amazingly close to that cgi trailer? Yeah, read up a little, homey.

Your first statement says it all. "If people buy a new console in the first place, why would they only buy it to play BC games?" They don't. Thats why the need for BC isn't that great. And why what Tretton says is smart. Most buy the new console for new games, so Sony is pushing that. Giving the pople what they want and NEED.

Second, those who are so hardcore to keep old games and to want to play them, especdially amongst all of the "next-gen" titles coming out, they will be hardcorte enough to have kept the console that goes with the games. If not, too bad. Sell them and buy something new.

Then explain to me the triple periods at the end of the piece of the article and this "THE FULL WSJ.com ARTICLE IS ONLY AVAILABLE TO SUBSCRIBERS" Which means that you have to subscribe to see the whole article. The poster from the NEOGAF forumsprobrably have a subscription and posted the quotes and provided the link but forgot that the article was for subcribers only much like the IGN Insider articles are for subcribers only!

Hell, why would they remove backwards compatibility to encourage people to buy PS3 games if what he's alluding to is that people were buying the PS3 for reasons other than to play games? That's still moving systems.

You obviously weren't here when cows spent a year bashing the 360 for limited BC and raving about the PS3's BC and how Sony were looking after their fans. Now the PS3 has dumped it its no longer necessary? You might not have been around but any cows that were and agree with this will be demonstrating cow hypocrisy at its finest. (sales aren't important - wooo we sold more this week - followed by endless cow rampage on the death of wii and 360 threads, until the next sales figures come out of course :P )

Well, my repect for them just got a bit lower. I'm sorry. I am loving the BC, as right now, I'd rather play Ratchet & Clank, God of War, and Jaks.

The PS3 really so far has Heavenly Sword, MotorStorm, Folklore, and Resistance. Those are all great PS3 games, but after that, the PS3 is lacking in great, must buy games for they next few months (Ratchet & Clank and Uncharted the exceptions), and having a wealth of PS2 games to fill that void is a blessing for Sony, yet they act like its a curse.

From a business stand point the PS2 is a gift and now a curse to the PS3. Sony does need to encourage PS3 game purchasing but its a shame that this is how they chose to do it.

Glad to have my fully PS2 BC 60GB PS3.

They could encourage sales...ya know...by having some truly must have AAA titles. Just a thought.
