[QUOTE="-Spock-"]That shot is real-time. They achieve graphics like that by combining HD photography with simple geometry. The Swiss Alps in Gran Turismo HD and the Grand Canyon track in Gran Turismo 4 are super examples of this technique in action. Even distant trees use similar 2D trickery. As a result they can save polygons, and the added power can then be put to good use on the main attraction: the cars.

Swiss Alps background is not a skybox, it's a 3D model. If you have a PS3, run GT HD, pick "time trial", select a car, press start race and you'll get to the level preview screen (don't press the flag icon) where you get to see the camera passes by the mountains which are clearly 3D models (i.e. not just a skybox 2D picture).
You've misunderstood my post...
Read: "by combining HD photography with simple geometry". The mountains are just photographs, but underneath the surface are basic geometric shapes. Each bump and precipice of the cliff is merely a texture (the photo in this case), carefully molded around a simple 3D object. The mountains are 3D, yes, but the textures and small details are just another part of the photo. Hell, trees are just two large intersecting squares with a painted-on photo. Wind forward to 1:25 to see what I mean.

when you can move the camera OVER the mountain, that's when you have proof...;)
dude, the camera does go over the mountain. If you have a PS3, do the procedure I mentioned above to see it for yourself.

I c, then we're in agreement.
And almost all games do the same btw (i.e. far off objects, that players don't get to see up close, usually receive the lowest geometry details).
the reason why GT5 looks ultra realistic is because Polyphony team does things smarter rather than harder. They know how to cut corners properly.

GT:HD is not GT5. GTHD is a tech demo using GT4 assets. GT5 is completely new and I'm sure will have AA running.
And who said those backgrounds are pictures. Yeah the texture on that building is a picture but it is still a 3D model.... it just looks much nicer. And those mountain backgrounds in GTHD were actually 3D also. If you actually played it and looked closely you can see it's not just a picture.... just looks really damned good.
[QUOTE="AgentA-Mi6"]What we have seen of GT5 indeed PWNS all console games graphically even Gears
Dreams-Visions
must agree. do we still expect this game to weigh in at 60fps?
wow gt 5 with damage and weather thats awesome. no more bumper cars i guess. also the interior view is impressive. remember interior for like what 500 cars? thats alot of work and impressive very impressive. i guess the only thing forza has over gt now is custom paintanshuk20002
and no in-car view.;)
lol at gt's plastic gameplay  depresedmichfan
Have you ever mastered a GT series? "Plastic gameplay"? Hardly. I been playing GT since 97 and cant agree with you. I might buy Forza to see what the big deal about its gameplay.Crashing a car like a Ferrari is.. horrible Sorry, but i dont wanna see any Ferari crashed... in videogame or real life!!

buy forza 2 (or 1 if you only have an xbox). you'll never go back to gt again.
False. Also, for those that think that screen is real, then you're in for a very rude awakening. Did any of you guys actually watch the vid that the screen showed is from? It's called a "concept" vid and it's labeled that way.BioShockOwnz
Um that is realtime sorry to break it to you try watching all the Gameplay trailers out on the internet or better yet read the previews where the verdict is that it isbasically one of the most realistic games they have ever seen.

thats good to hear.. have you played gran turismo 5? please.. answer that

haha.. for some odd reason i fall asleep everytime i play forza 2.. i swear im not lieing.. i rented it on saturday or sunday along with bioshock.. seriously it is really boring.. GT owns forza IMO.. GT:HD is fun, nice graphics, nice feel.. im sure gt5 will be even better.. and then when i played a race in the amatuers cup, it took around 3 minutes to load the race and when it was loaded half the sky was black, half was grey, ad the road was black.. the grass was all assortments of colors... i cant even beat the race without it freezing.. its funny.. oh well.. glad i rented it
Well duh, true. That game looks ridiculous. It's actually kinda close to real life, at least for the cars. The tracks aren't as sweet as real life, but they're stil pretty awesome.
Oh and by the way, gran turismo prologue looks noticeably better than GTHD.
It does look good, to a point. I know everyones all about the car models, but I race using the bumper cam. Tracks and backgrounds mean alot from there. If I spotted some 2d crowds and cardboard trees, it would really bother me more than slightly jaggy car models.
We'll see I guess.
Isn't the GT series notorious for having superb screenshots and even some very nice trailers but looking remarkably worse when people actually get to play it?Newnab
Yes
I disagree. GT might looks more realistic or whatever, but personally I just think it looks flat and boring or whatnot. Think it's the lighting. Perhaps it's the uncanny valley. Who knows, or cares. I prefer looking at something like Alan Wake or Cry...never mind, only console games. Mass Effect and Heavenly Sword then. Hell, I prefer the look of Flatout: Ultimate Carnage.
Haven't watched any GT videos since I last played GTHD like 3 months ago though, perhaps things have changed.
we're talking about multi-billion frenchies here, so don't insult the developers by comparing this master piece to Forza! do I need to say moregameruk2010
No, please be quiet.
If it wasnt for the car, i would think thats real. We will just have to wait till we see this game on motion
Something tells me it wont look like that in motion.SemiMaster
Yeah it looks better. The lighting on the cars and enviroments is the most realistic yet. Soft shadows, dynamic shadows, and everything else all on cars that have 200,000 polygons. The game is the best looking game we have yet seen on consoles.
False. It is highly detailed cars rendered in a mostly 2D environment. The cars are amazing but the backgrounds look like pictures plastered onto skyboxes.foxhound_fox
Yes, but cows will say thats better. IMHO i love to see good enviornments, its like bioshock having great char models, but crap textures and polys, wait that reminds me of killzone 2.
I love 60fps the blur is real blur not an effect. Heres a M3 closeup, Just like the game looks(No filters)
I wish the pics didn't lose as much quality when uploaded to Forzamotorsports.net.
Ive seen the GT5 vids and they look awsome I have a question though, How can you drive without triggers on the controller? Its either floored or not floored and really difficult to corner without torqesteer. I had that prob on the ps2 and as far as I know the ps3 has the same controller.

No filters? The game has no AA, its 1080p60 no AA, just like the GT4HD engine. Those shots, just like forza 2 and PGR3 are touched up when u take them. And the "blur" is called motion blur. Yeah the PS3 controller has crap triggers, they should have made them more of triggers, so my fingers dont slip off the damn triggers.
Umm...first of all Real Time...watch the vids...
Second, thats not a "static photo" in the background...its 3d...once again...watch the vids...
Third...you HONESTLY cant say GT5 has "jaggies" compared to Forza 2...ONCE AGAIN watch the vids...
Fourth I'm 100% sure that GT 5 will look BETTER than how it does now, after it comes out.
Fifth, lawl at fanboys...And you can't call me a fanboy...it doesnt take a fanboy to realise that those cars are extremely high poly, and are high quality real time renders...

Chill, I maybe wrong but I sensed hostility in that. The photomode doesn't tuch up unless you make it touch up. You were not real specific but I think you meant that the motion blur wasn't real it was an effect, But in this case the developer Turn 10 was explaining that it is the 60fps that causes that, not an effect. Gt5 probly has it too I was just saying that It looked alot better than NFS blur
