Before i begin, i want to clear up2 things. As much as im against it in other situations, im going to have to exclude the PC. Mainly due to the PC doesnt really have gens and i dont want this thread to turn into a debate whether certain PC games count for which gens.

And with regards to the pictures, i didnt personally set out to find them. All i did was a quick search, nothing more so i dont want to hear how im being biased towards a certain period etc. If you want, just post your own pictures. Anyway, now onto the real topic.

I've heard many people say in SW (and all around) that this gen from the last has been the smallest graphical jump. I personally dont agree with but i decided to look at the best each had to offer and just compare. So here it is, which do you think has been the biggest? Ive included different pictures for single gens just to keept the thread more bright.

(i may have gotten some of the earlier gens muddled up since im not too knowledgable there, if you would just kindly point it out :) )

1st gen - 2nd gen

These pictures/games are not the ones up for debate, i just put them there as an indication and we can dicuss it from what we know.

For me 3rd - 4th. I didnt really use good pictures there but damn, the 16 bit era looked good compare to the 8.

Going from 2D to 3D is the biggest jump, I think.

1st to 2nd took a pretty big jump from to colors to hundreds of colors, but last to this gen, we went from millions of colors to just one: Brown. Now that's a jump!8)

Seriously though, 4th to 5th. The jump from 2D to 3D was mind blowing for me. Then again, as a kid back then, anything could be mind blowing. :P

You mean Real-life 3.

Anyway i expected alot of people to say 4th to 5th. Although it took gaming to 3d, i dont think it necessarily looks better. We lost clean crisp vibrant colours for jaggied filled blurry/smugded world etc.

For 7th gen you should have put in a pic of Crysis. Would have been a bigger leap.

Well, you didn't ask which gen made the biggest jump in looking better. You said graphics, and that would undeniably be 4th to 5th.

Until they start utilizing 3DTVs. Thats gonna be a huge jump imo just because of the coolness that it will bring.

it's a tie between 4th-5th gen and 5th - 6th gen. the jump from 2d to 3d was huge but the jump in graphics fidelity from the 5th - 6th was just as huge a jump. the only thing that can be bigger is by going from simulated 3d (current 3d games) to actual autostereoscopic 3d games.

Great topic. I think 4th to 5th is the winner here. The jump from 2-D to 3-D is just too big to be ignored.

I still remember playing Mario 64 in a kiosk at a toy store and actually having goosebumps. LOL. I remember thinking now I don't have to buy so many games because now I'd have Virtual Worlds to explore and it would take forever to see everything. Now we have huge open-world games like Oblivion, Fallout 3, GTA 4, etc. and it's not even that big of a deal anymore.

Anyways the 2d to 3d jump like everyone says was the hugest. Those early 3d games are rough now and have not aged well but it's similar to pre-NES (i.e. Atari, Colecovision, Odyssey) games in that most of them have aged poorly as well.

Last Gen games (PS2, Xbox, GC) are to 3D what the NES was to 2D; games got a little more refined and worlds and characters started to seem more organic. This gen (PS3 & 360) is like the SNES/Genesis gen in that 3d games are getting ultra-detailed and even more epic just like all the refined and epic 2d Masterpieces of the 16-bit gen. Next up we are due for a new revolution, however this time it won't be graphics but rather controls. The Wii was the first step and I believe the Wii is to motion-sensing what Atari is to 2D gaming or what N64/PS1 is to 3D gaming. It is the first step and will not age well when played years from now.
