reason i say n64, because n64 brought 3d plus 3d exceleration, 3d had been done before n64, but not 3d exceleration ps1 didnt have it.

I agree, but there were 3d games like starfox on snes.

the 4th-5th gen is the biggest the jump to 3d was the largest jump.

though i still think 2d games made well look vastly better then 3d games.

[QUOTE="shahchip"] How did you get the camera to zoom in?

Hmm.. I think you hold down L3 or R3 during replays.

But that pic isnt a replay... or at least im pretty sure isnt. Is it?

It is. You can turn on the HUD during replays.

I think 2D to 3D then this gen was probably the biggest leap (physics, more detail, better graphics, etc.)

4th-5th then 2nd-3rd (where games actually became playable, at least for me) then last gen to current mostly due to things that aren't seen.

For all those saying 4th - 5th due to 3d, look at this.

Photobucket

Photobucket

3rd gen - 4th gen

In terms of technical graphics, thats huge. Sure it looks like a piece of crap on a stick now but it made the jump to 3d (this thread is not about the standard in a gen but the highest a single gen could produce, even if it was just one game).

6th - 7th is pretty huge too. Especially when you consider were about 2/3 of the way through this gen. By then end, expect the gap to be substantial.

And i also have now changed my mind to 4th - 5th :P. I just had to look at the ocarina of time picture to realise how big it was.

Has to be the jump to 3D. Not only did it change the graphics but it revolutionised how we play games. This gen is like last gen but on a larger scale with shaders and bloom.

4th to 5th is gives a false picture IMO. It's more like this;

Heheh, that makes me proud that I still have my original Starwing cart to this day :P

I remember how visually spectacular it was, playing it a friends house (and playing Stunt Racer).

So much so I bought it and Vortex (which I also still have :P ) - also had great technical visuals for a snes game.

Vortex Boxshot

Still, its worth noting, that it wasn't until the N64 and PSX came around, before we started seeing true evolution in design for 3D enviroments (I suppose Segas systems too).

Of course the PC cannot be forgotten in this regard, pushing the boundaries of 3D visuals and design over an expansive time period, and from the early to late 90s, having some extremely progressive and innovative titles in use of 3D.

The jump in dimensions was the largest graphical leap.

So... snes to N64. My first N64 game, majora's mask, blew my face off.

All of them... Every gen is a massive jump. Despite people who say it doesn't look any better then the last.

Great topic. I think 4th to 5th is the winner here. The jump from 2-D to 3-D is just too big to be ignored.

4th - 5th. It was phenomenal. Not only was there a huge jump in dimensions, the controls were revolutionised too. We got the 3D stick and then rumble a bit later. The 3D stick, now known as the analogue stick, was outstanding when implemented in Mario 64, there was so much freedom in movement - just thinking back to that moment gives me goosebumps. The game actually became a benchmark for several years. I guess the next thing to match that high feeling would be a complete jump into virtual reality in both visuals and controls.

2D to 3D is the biggest graphical jump, and it will stay that way forever. Why? Because humans just can't see, understand or even imagine what 4D is like. The next leap is probably developing AI that can think for itself.

2D to 3D was pretty big, but at the same time PS1 - Xbox was a really big jump. It was nice to no longer have triangle feet and hands :P
