Evan Wells: Absolutely, we're leveraging every bit of technology in the PlayStation 3, from the blu-ray drive, I mean our game would just not fit in single DVD, it will have to be in multiple DVD's which isn't the way you want to play games anymore.

well obviously if they have access to bluray they're gonna use it to the fullest. i.e. the "hardboiled" movie coming with stranglehold..

but you cant say good things about the ps3 here...

Because they're making the game for the PS3 and have no incentives to keep it to the DVD-9 limitations. Obviously if you have more space, you're going to use it.

We'll have to wait and see if the extra space translates into a better game, that's the real question at this point.

Cheers,

depends on what they use the extra space for. Its really not a long game from what i keep hearing about the game.

it will probably still be AAA, but nothing so special that we say it cant be done on 360 in some manor, disc swapping isnt an issue really.

Interesting. A Sony subsidiary claiming their software cannot be done without a Sony system.

Well obviously that's all in order then.

Multiple discs are fine. I mean you'd only have to change the disc once halfway through the game, so what?

I cant think of why it would need so much space, the graphics are ok but nothing amazing, Iv herd the single player isnt that long and all the different animations wouldn't take up much space.

funny thing is that one of the most hyped sony games in history... FF7 is on 4 discs. This game is full of worthless cgi cut scenes etc and running on a bloated engine. How can UT3 fit on one DVD?

I'm not so sure this will be true 'AAA' material. Naughty Dog has only managed to score a AAA once from GS (Jak II - 9.1) and Gamespot has a tendency to rate Naughty Dog games higher than most critics.

The last game Naughty Dog released was one of their worst, not even managing to get a AA (Jak X - 7.9) from Gamespot. Gamespot also rated Jak X higher than most critics, I believe the Gamerankings is somewhere around 7.6 but you would have to look it up.

I think Uncharted is really going to be a title that makes or breaks Naughty Dog. This is the first time they've made a game going for realisitic gameplay/graphics.

Definetely going to be interesting to see more about this at E3.

Resistance doesn't either, oh wait it's because all that non-game data in there... It's Sony, they're reading Sony's script to the letter. I don't buy into this hype at all, the Resistance thing already proved that ps3 devs are full of it.

Epic had to edit their Gears of War to fit on a DVD9, taking stuff out and stuff. Later theres going to be games that will past 9 gigs within these 10 years. Couple more years 360 is going to be abandoned for another system like the original xbox.

Then again Oblivion provided hundreds of hours of gameplay....With the stale repetitive environments and crappy NPC designs in a huge empty 16 square mile space where you just ran around doing the same type of quests over and over and over again...

I honestly do not want AC to turn out that way, but considering its free roam nature and how massive its map is going to be, I get the sneaking suspicion that it's going to be abother Oblivion with a more stylish representation.

I shouldn't have to switch discs. Considering we've come to a point in technological evolution where we can leave disc juggling behind us, it seems only logical that we should embrace such an idea. The less disks there are, the less I'm forced to keep track of and worry about.

Speaking of which, that's another idea I hope they'll implement with Blu-Ray: Collector Packs. I imagine every single MGS game, aside from 4, could be fit onto one disc. That would be extraordinarily cool.

I actually think it sucks especially with xbox 360 games because always constantly changing disk will leave scratch marks on your games. Besides I look at it like if im watching an anime series such as naruto, I dont wanna keep getting up to change it to the next disk, it would be alot cooler being all on one disk which can be done on the ps3.

ms should have totally put a disc changer in the 360, you could put the dvds in and it'd swap for you, totally removes storage issues.

They COULD make it fit on a DVD9. But they wont. Because Sony told them not to.

Same thing happened with Resistance.

Technically arent all PS3 games more than 9 Gigs?

And when they, are they're mostly uncompressed files and HD cut scenes .

This is nothing big, if they wanted to they could fit in into a DVD, i mean if UT3 can and it looks better than this, why cant uncharted?

I think the PS3 is a unique machine and can't wait to own one. But for me the biggest flaw in the PS3 is the BLU-RAY it has slow read speeds (which can be worked around) but is not needed this gen.

Having that much space is always a bonus to developers but it has impacts as well a) its expensive to smaller developers b) slow speeds c) just not needed.

Yes its great for films/tv shows to maybe added to games and thats a bonus but as a format for games its just not needed.

I think most games can fit onto DVD-9 and tho games like Blue Dragon are on 3 (due to audio/movie sequences) the game could have fit on DVD-9 if they had wanted to. But its easier to put a game on 3 discs and the effect is small changing a disc every 15 hours of play.

Obviously I'd prefer a bigger format but until the speeds increase (1 year away) then its not worth while.

Drake could fit ontoa DVD-9 if the dev time from beginning was making it for DVD-9. But they have BR so might as well use it. But with that they have slow speeds so expect long load times and streaming some of the game from your HDD.

You do have a point but for me you are just obviously trying to bait X360. Which is silly coz Drake could be worked onto 360 from the ground up but maybe not a port. But GEARS could not run on PS3 with out re-working it from the ground up. Compression is getting better all the time and is not even noticable to the trained eye, tho most 14 year old kids think they can tll the differnce on their 20inch bedroom TV (ridiculous)...

Non the less I cant wait for Drakes and hope to have it when I get my PS3 eventually. Its my fav looking PS3 game and reminds me of Flashback/Beyond Good & Evil with a touch of Indiana Jones...canne wait.

Why would u change the disk on Naruto if it was on HD it would need the add-on HD player so it would have a larger format. If its on dvd than you wont need to change it. Im confused by your statement.

Most games dont need to change disks on the 360. Its only games with a lot of FMV's and audio files. And the new compression techniques always coming through mean its getting easier all the time.

If I had to choose to have BR in the PS3 or not. I'd say no coz they then could have knocked the price down, included a 1gb+ RAM graphics card and had bigger/faster bandwidths. That would have made the PS3 look miles better than the 360. BLU-RAY will never help the PS3 look better as thats not what these drives do if anything it detracts from the performance with the slow read speeds. So its not all rosy with BR. Drake would look miles better if BR was taken out DVD-9 and the above put in for similar costs....tis true

Yeah the PS3 version of Oblivion also wouldn't fit on a DVD-9, because the BR drive is so slow they had to copy the EXACT SAME CONTENT on the disc at multiple locations so the load times wouldn't be atrocious... yeah that's a great use of space innit?

LOL...

Are you for real, technological evolution? Blur-Ray & HD=DVD are so wrong and its a complete shambles. Both are a waste and not needed just yet they are not revolutionary like previous growths. The next jump in disk format should be in 5 years with 100+gb disks which will be decent enough for 1080P and above ratio's coz BR & HD-DVD will be surpassed in 5 years which is far to early.

With streaming, compression, downloading etc getting better I can see the real need for progression is in compression right now. Just making format sizes bigger is not the way to go right now. As compression is going to be needed again soon in Br/HD-DVD so lets get compression pushed further and then improve formats which in my eyes is too small anyway.

Movies are already filling up BR disks and thats early on in its life which is ridiculous. Yep DL will help but not for long...

Compression is the future and many people know it bar the rich-twits making dollars off of the formats.

I'm still astounded comments from someone who is virtually a Sony employee (remember, Naughty Dog is a subsidiary of Sony) have aroused so much debate.

Would you take the word of Bungie as impartial and correct if they said Halo 3 could only be done on the 360?

Compression can only go so far.

More space, on the other hand, will always be more space.

Hideo Kojima's MGS4 requires a Blu-Ray so he can lace 7.1 digital sound to the game. You simply cannot compress that kind of data without damaging its true quality. Modern digital information is not that far from such a scenario.

I love when people use how long a game is as there countering statement. The thing is, it's not usually how long a game, Chaos Theory was one of the largest games(Data wise) on the xbox, it wasn't really the longest however. I'm not a cow either, just saying that game length isn't always relevant.

That was blown out of proportion. Whoever found the padding files screwed up their math or something. Its only 420mb per region.
