Which is the tipping point isnt it? Already there are rumblings about games like Lair and Heavenly Sword being suger coated yawn fests. If a game named Uncharted: Drakes Fortune doesnt hold well, thematically, then theres nothing to save it. Obviously, it hasnt dawned on developers that hiring people who know how to write is pretty important. The code monkeys, I wouldnt trust them with writing crib notes for Wheres Waldo. Gears of War, anyone?Games with stories >> anything else.
That is, if the story is good.
lordxymor
Gears is linear and some people call it the best shooter ever.
Linear =/= bad
OXIIIIXO
because of its online play.. Oh wait, You forgot to mention drake has 0 multiplayer while gears doesh ave it. ouch sorry, logic DENIED
Ya but the preview also said,
"Definitely, there's plenty of promise with many areas we played involving a good deal of exploration and observation before the path forward was revealed." Doesn't sound too linear, maybe just the first bit was linear(which linear isn't a bad thing anyways)
Also,
"By all accounts, Uncharted is shaping up to be an incredibly slick, engaging action platformer for PlayStation 3. We can't wait to see more."
"So far then, we're impressed with the sauced up combat Naughty Dog has infused in Uncharted" (gameplay sounds good)
"More impressive still is the sheer polish in production values, even at this early stage."
"What's more, facial animation is simply incredible, with both leads emoting convincingly, lip-synching accurately and just exuding personality. If nothing else, Naughty Dog looks to have created a world of adventure you'll be glad to be lost in."
Actually the preview just solidifies my opinion on the game. The gameplay and combat sounds great, they say the acting/voices/facial animations are outstanding.
Their only real complaint is that the character sometimes screws up when jumping from to another cliff. Seems like a simple error that can be easily fixed by Naughty Dog.
Honestly this preview almost said only good things about the game and this is supposed to make a bad game?

Have fun playing facial animations.
You know it's bad when you're wondering how well a game will hold up against Tomb Raider.Michael85SCi Entertainment, which owns Eidos Interactive, the creator of the Tomb Raider series, announced this week that Tomb Raider Legend has sold over 2.6 million copies since its release five weeks ago. Seems like they should strive to achieve it

Are you kidding me? So if i was to say "have fun playing good graphics" in GeoW, that would fly?
From the IGN preview:
"While Lara is practically synonymous with vast, labyrinthine levels, Drake's trek from his landing spot to the wreckage of his plane in the early build we played is a strictly linear affair. Hopefully things will open out in later levels but, currently, there's something disappointingly old-school about your progress. Despite, expansive vistas and promise of all manner of explorable nooks and crannies in amongst the gorgeously lush terrain, you're essentially forced along one narrow jungle corridor, with fallen logs and boulders determined to spoil your fun."
I don't know when this game is going to be released but it doesn't sound very good. One more quote:
"it's difficult to assess how well Uncharted will hold up against Crystal Dynamics's sterling platform puzzle work on the Tomb Raider franchise."
Dude Raider FTL.

Cows have been hyping this game beyond belief. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.....

Don't waste your time with JiveT--he will blantly flame any game on a Sony system.
And I would not worry too much with the few negatives IGN had to say. First off, most linear games are far better than sandbox kind of games. You can not get the great narrative and action sequences if you can run all over the entire area. Look at games like GoW, MGS, most FPS, Jak & Daxter, Rachet and Clank, and so on. All of these games were fantastic--the liner gameplay drives the story, action, narrative, etc. Linear is usually really good for single player games.
Also, the part about the platforming being a little glitchy in places (such as he missed grabbing onto the cliff edge--or he jumped incorrectly) will all be ironed out during development. This game is months and months off and, HELLO, it is being developed by ND--one of the best (if not the best) platforming game developer.
Hype this game all you want to guys, it is a garaunteed blockbuster in my book. This will be one of the many games released this holiday that will start the pendulum swinging in the postitive direction for Sony. I would go far as saying this will be a system seller.

I'll have fun with the combat(both hand to hand and guns) which IGN themselves say is excellent.
This is the most retarded thing ive heard in a while.....this is exactly the same thing as ppl saying heavenly sword has small arena based areas only simplybecause the first playable demo that was available to the public was an arena battle. The game isn't done, they haven't even completed the animations for drake himself......what a shock that the demo they played was linear.....more then likely a damn walkthrough. The first game that comes to mind when i think of uncharted is the original jak and daxter, and that is exactly what i expect this game to be like.
I don't think this game is going to be very good.

No it wouldn't because you can play good graphics you can't play facial animations.
Seeing as they integrate with each other... But speaking of them as in a different area: What if the game has good graphics along with good animations?:o Did I just blew SW away?
You can hate me all day the fact is this game ain't all that. (maybe rap language will make it clearer for you)JiveT
lol...wow
and if your actually trying to insult me because I listen to rap by using a "different language" you didnt even do it right....
in reality (system wars isnt even close to reality).....
Pros of Uncharted > Cons of Uncharted...
Says the PS3 hater:roll:I don't think this game is going to be very good.

Seriouslyif you trust IGN then your as ignorant as them, Linear? This is a story driven game, its supposed to be linear. Almost 95% of games are linear... That isnt oldschool. *sigh* I wanna punch every IGN editor.

Well first party PS3 exclusives werent so great like Motorstorm and F1 or Genji LMAO.
Isn't God of War linear?
Most games I've played are linear because they force you down one path to finish the level. The only games that don't tend to be linear are RPGs but I could be wrong.
darthogre
JRPGs aro also often quite linear.

Tomb Raider legend had a good story. I wish they make a next gen Tomb Raider (built for next gen I mean)
Good story?:| it was freaking lame... gameplay is what made legend so good.If this is true: 7.5-8.0 score confirmed. Gamespot does not like linear games. If it is linear then it better deliver in the gameplay department even if the storyline is screwed. Is there any kind of multiplayer? If not then thats a major blow aswell..if theres no multiplayer then it should offer multiple routes to completion despite it being linear. Gears of War was this same way but It delivered in the gameplay/replayability areas despite it having a cheesy linear storyline.Pro_wrestler
Gamespot doesn't like inear games? You must mean linear games like platformers, most shooters, most JRPG's, most adventure games, a bunch of WRPGs, and most racing games?
If they don't like linear games, then why are games like GeOW and PD0 given high scores? Why is FFX (which is MOSTLY a linear experience) given AAA?
On theother hand, in a game like this which seems like it should be not completely linear, it might be a point against it.
[QUOTE="darthogre"]btw most games are linear because Developers know what sells games. Complicated games do not sell well with casuals therefore you will get a lot of linear games. And as said above I also though Gears of War was linear and didn't hear anyone complain about it.Redfingers
If this changes your perspective even slightly, you were allowed to choose "left" or "right" paths. It's a little thing, but you know how it is.
I don't think linearity is a bad thing, but given Jak 3 it sounds crazy that Naughty Dog would make Uncharted linear. I'm afraid Lair, Uncharted, and Ratchet, indeed, all these single-player only games are going to be stupidly short, meaning the entire appeal is drained from it.
I'm hopeful, but I agree, this doesn't sound good.
Still, it kind of pisses me off that the TC is obviously not a Playstation 3 owner.
Actually, Insomniac says the campaign is gonna be 30-40+ hours, as they want the game to be BIG.

You DO realize that you are trolling... and besides, that IS the rest of the preview. It's not like he wrote it himself, which means that IGN thinks it play very well. So why don't you go have fun playing with those beatiful graphics in M- oops, sorry, I mean watching those beautiful cut-scenes in Mass Effect.

Yes, but this thread itself is a troll thread against Uncharted. So trolling by others in troll thread = acceptable.
Wow, that's the worst logic I've used in a while. Yeah, I'm sorry for that bit about ME; it was a bit uncalled for. Then again, so was that comment about facial animations.

wow, a PS3 hater, hates a PS3 game. I almost died from that surprise.
can I borrow your copy of mass effect so i can see the GOTY material for myself? oh, and while I'm borrowing, can I also borrow uncharted so i can see why it fails?
I think the danger for this game is that it will become a linear short SP game. Gears of war got away with a linear short SP because it had MP and it had amazing graphics for its time. By now, the graphics we see from uncharted are becoming the standard, and if I heard things right there would be no MP. The makers will have to turn up with some amazing gameplay or story, otherwise I think this game is barely worth its purchase.
(I'm going off the rumours that this game's SP would be very short, like in most fps short.)
That's already known for a while, the devs already said this when they showed the first gameplay video,
They said that the game is going to be linear with 2 or 3 different paths.
When i heard that i was very dissapointed because i really thought that it's going to be more like Alan Wake which is a freeroaming game, i mean damn, jungle levels with no freeroaming, that's not great, i want to explore, that's probably the reason for only 10-12h gameplay :(
