8/10 from GS, and it's an 87 on MC. Definitely worth the $10 upgrade if you already own the original. Plus you get Dual Sense and 3D audio support. But for $50? Maybe if you never played them before.

@Archangel3371: Watched the video and although it seems like they did make some changes (better LOD, and in some rare cases better textures), for the most part it seems simply like a performance patch since the changes are quite minimal (and frankly could have just been patched in). Also, I'm a little surprised that it's only 1440p 60fps, would have expected higher given the age of the game (even though it still looks excellent on PS5 backwards compact mode/PS4 pro)

I will def get it due to the 60fps and 120fps modes, but frankly this should have been a free upgrade for the owners of the previous games (since outside of higher fps most other upgrades seem minimal). Sure the upgrade is cheap (costs less than a drink at a bar), but it's more the principle here rather than actual cost, especially when the competition (MS) does this stuff for free and also introduces things like FPS Boost in many titles.

It's interesting to see the different strategies the companies are taking - MS is spending money to grow their business, while Sony is printing money to grow their business

trollylolface

In all seriousness Sony probably should have offered this update free to prior owners - but i look forward to buying it to play LoT for the first time on PC

Isn't their 3D audio, which is designed foremost for headphones, worse than the games' original 5.1/7.1, though?

@tribesjah: Ah, ok. Haven’t really watched it myself yet. I picked up a copy of the game awhile ago for like $10 or $20 Canadian so it’s not too bad for me getting an upgraded version for like $10 or so when I get a PS5. It could even be cheaper by then.

Yes/Maybe, I am guessing it is game specific. I did try their 3d Audio when I first got the PS5 and felt that it sounded awful in Miles Morales (like very tiny/trebly if memory servers right, also seemed like there was a filter between me and the sound), thought the regular one (in headphones) sounded better. But maybe they have improved their process/algorithms? And yes it is only meant for headphones. Frankly they should have just gone with either atmos or dtsx instead,so that you could have this 3d audio on ht speakers.

But agreed would be much better regardless if there was improvement in 3d audio algo to play this with 5.1 on a proper surround sound system. Plus with receivers having dolby atmos and dtsx up mixing, you can still get some of the benefits (assuming you have height channel speakers)

I was just making a DF thread and Glitchspot stuck and erased my summary. There are some minor tweaks to visuals but it's not dramatic. The selling point would be the 120fps mode and the fast loading for encounters. Good for people who waited almost an entire gen to play uncharted.

Rift Apart was worth it at least.

Hopefully there is some significant difference between Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarok PS4 and PS5 versions.

Couldn't agree more, I paid full price (60 euro) for Rift Apart and feel like it was totally worth it.

Content complete singleplayer on launch, and it had a lengthy campaign.

Sure, but people that only owned the standalone DLC for GTA IV on PC, got the base version for free.

Here, once again, it's Sony charging a set amount.

According to those PS statistics that just came out, I put 43 hours into Rift Apart. Has to be the longest Ratchet and Clank title I've played

Honestly, true surround sound and HDR are the only things keeping me from playing almost all my PC games at my desk with a mouse and keyboard. I would be so conflicted about Uncharted in particular, games which would benefit immensely from mouse aiming. I've seen some KB/M sofa setups, but using them on a sofa will never not suck. A desk is far more comfortable. Your arms are at the proper height and your spine is properly aligned for computing. I have also never in my life seen a good surround sound desk setup. The tweeters are always so small and there is always so little room for sound separation, since the desk is right against the wall. My dream setup for games like this would have the desk either in the center of the room in 7.1 or, if it's a smaller room, towards one side of the room, with the chair between the desk and wall, in 5.1. If it supported Atmos or DTS:X, then it would obviously be 5.1.2 or 7.1.4. (I never upmix 5.1 to 5.1.2, because I don't trust the upmixer to always know what sounds should go up.) The HDR TV would be a few feet away from the desk.

I feel like 3D sound should be aimed at PC gamers, not console gamers. Since PC gamers are almost always using headphones and console gamers have the proper space for speaker systems. But I know that most console gamers use soundbars or headphones anyway, which is why they chose this proprietary system in the first place. Personally, I've never been impressed by 3D audio. For some reason, none of the games that used binaural recording were as impressive as the Barbershop demo. Resident Evil 2 even sounds more muffled with it on. Sounds like the filter you described in Miles Morales.

People have the option to buy or not to buy. I have both games and they are both excellent. Anyone new to PlayStation has an opportunity to get this or get the versions already available.

@warm_gun:

Honestly, I agree (for the most part). Outside of exclusives, the main reason I was playing a decent amount on console was due to HDR and Surround Sound. Hell even some games that I would tradionally have played on PC (for example, Mass Effect LE), I waited till it came to Game Pass before playing it because I wanted proper HDR and Surround sound (even though I could have played earlier since I had ea play pro on PC). Which is not to say HDR does not work on PC, it does (not as well as console but well enough, a little more finicky for sure though). Issue is until recently there were no good HDR monitors (hell you could argue there still are not at reasonable prices/sizes, the LG 48 C1 is a tv and too large, the Samsung 49inch neo qled is too large and expensive, etc). And yeah PC surround sound is meh. I recall buying Logitech X540 long long time ago which sounded meh for example. I guess you could use proper theater speakers, but then you probably will need a receiver as well which further complicates things (plus no receiver has Displayport so you would need both an hdmi 2.1 monitor and a 2.1 receiver should you wish high resolution and refresh rate).

In terms of comfort, I don't fully agree, I do like getting on my recliner and playing on the TV, it is just as if not more comfortable than sitting on the office chair, but to each their own. But yeah I don't understand how some people can play with the weird couch kvm setup that simply does not look comfortable.

Lastly, Id give the upmixer a chance tbh, especially the atmos upmixer. Both the atmos and dtsx have their own unique way of dealing with things, where the dtsx is more aggressive. But the atmos one is great especially for ambiance/soundtracks. Really increases the size of the Soundstage. Got so used to it than now when I turn it off, seems like something is missing (and this is on a crappy upfiring setup and only 5.1.2, I'm sure with ceiling mounted and. 5.1.4 it would be even better)

100%. £10 to upgrade because it supports the ps5 controller and has 3d audio support? not even 4k/60fps. feels like desperation, sony penny pinching anyway they can. it's cringey

It adds dualsense features too. Gamers have become entitled manbabies. These devs deserve time for their work. You're not going to do a 9 to 5 for a day just because. Paying 10 bucks for an upgrade gives you two games whether you have the other game or not.

Could you go into greater detail how much work it takes to unlock a PS4 game to run at 60fps instead of 30fps?

Because I'd pay loads of dollars to get Shadow of The Colossus and Gravity Rush 2 at higher performance.

Every time someone farts out "gamers are entitled"

Yea, they are consumer, they should be?

We aren't a charity and publishers are notoriously (legendary) predatory, morally bankrupt, duplicitous turds who will sell your liver if they can get away with it?

Treat them like how you'd treat a shark after dropping into the ocean.

We shouldn't expect our games to be good? We shouldn't expect them to be content complete without 500 DLCs on launch day? We shouldn't expect good performance?

No, screw that, I'll remain critical of companies. They are in it for the money? Ok, I'll talk through mine.

I'll wait for it to hit the $20 bargain bin at Walmart. Collection games like this usually drop to $20-$30 in the first couple months and that's when I go and sort through the bins and grab 5 or 6 games at a time that I otherwise wouldn't have bought at full price.

If we're going to be entitled, then let me say that these games don't have nearly enough arenas and that it would have cost Sony almost nothing to insert a bunch of endless ones with the assets already present. What are you supposed to do with these short linear games after you've played the campaigns twice already, now that there is no multiplayer even? You can't charge fifty dollars for games that are years old and have much less content. The original versions cost between ten and fifteen dollars each. Hopefully, the modders will build their own arenas somehow. But I doubt the PC community will care enough about this kind of game to go that far.
