Simple. A thing/things a game does that make you go "why?". It's unholy, wrong, ungodly. Mechanics, story, features, DLC, Anything.

I'll start with an example.

"Hello, my name is 343 "ship your content later" Studios, and we're ready to give you Halo: ODST without Firefight

Stuff like that. As to my picture above; Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen (on PC). Bought that. I'll try and get into this game for the umpteenth game now. But man, they got rid of the original main menu music.

If you don't like this, that means the wind wasn't pushing you. But yeah, it's not the main menu theme anymore, and that isn't cool. You can say it's ungodly.

Go!

Any game that forces you to go on a collectathon before you're able to reach the finale, for example Wind Waker's triforce quest.

Like, why would any developer think people would enjoy doing that?

When Sci-fi , horror, fantasy adventure games get rid of any boss battles or climatic set pieces that challenge the player in any way, and plays it safe and minimalstic for the entire game... Most games nowdays really. :( Also abrupt and cheap endings that only help set up the sequel or DLC.. I'm not a very happy gamer anymore. But if u mean even more nipticking things ill go with... Survival games only increasing like 20% hunger/health afer eating like 3 roasted beefs/meat. Example: Don't Starve. i need to eat like 10 bunnies to increase my hunger to maximum,

@freedomfreak: Have you enjoyed how the music starts blasting at full volume every time you start the game, before the user settings kick in? Marvelous.

Collectathon mentality in open world games.

200 pigeons, Assassins creed feathers, ect.

Edit: Akane from Zero Escape may be my most hated character in fiction.

In Fire Emblem Fates where you would "bond" with the person you married. It was very awkward and it felt like I was playing a Japanese anime dating game for a brief moment.

Escort missions/useless AI partners who need my help every 2 seconds because they keep on dying. RE4 and RE5 are annoying in parts. ICO can be annoying in parts too.

There is only 2 escort missions I can tolerate in all of gaming and that's MGS2 & MGS3 because thankfully they are very short and very easy. So it's not annoying.

Escort missions where the NPC can easily die due to randomness coupled with a time limit and sections where you have to kill all enemies before you can continue because they are opening a door or something.

They should have put a mode in The Last of Us where Ellie can die in all gunfights, that would have been something.

Cinematic walking. I hate it so fucking much, literally any scenario, ANY FUCKING scenario with cinematic walking would have been just as fine if you let the player run at normal speed and have all their regular ass movements. From an immersion standpoint it's super jarring that your controls don't work the same anymore, as buttons just simply stop working for a bit. It feels terrible, in a medium all about feel since you know: interactive, because you always walk at this fucking snails pace with this overdone animation so the dev can go "look at how pretty our game is, look at it, explore it"....bitch I'll explore on my own terms, cut this shit out.

It actively ruined certain stretches of Uncharted 4 for me, there is a late flash back in that game that is supposed to tie in nicely to something early in the game, but I fucking detest that for the dev to force exploration and looking around on me, they had to **** with my game movement because they had zero faith in the player. It's so fucking stupid.

When you are in a game and everyone acts like a jerk to you and everybody for no reason.

You're like "Why?" Who designs these people ? And what does the developer take you for that you would find such a thing enjoyable, let alone believable ?

Sometimes I miss the N64/PS1 worlds where everything was made of rainbows, sunshine and chocolate and everyone was friendly to you and you were the nice guy, the hero.

Even Mario's clouds had friendly faces, I like that :)

Anyway I've been wondering that after encountering some really unfriendly NPCs in Homefront: The Revolution and Mirror's Edge Catalyst, among many others :P

The first thing that came to my mind was Kingdom hearts collections. They removed the fantastic german dubs from all games that had them. Why? KH is one of the few series that actually had somewhat decent VA in the german translation

@freedomfreak: Diablo 3 as a whole hands down ... Even if it shaped up 3 years later with its expansion .. that was my biggest " WHY OMFG WTF LOL " with RESIDENT EVIL 4 being close ( at least RE4 had high standards as a game overall )

I mean what to even mention about Diablo 3 ? The cheesy and predictable story ? The most ridiculous voice acting ever ? The epic fail scripting like when you go and kill someones wife then he thanks you with no emotion from either scripting/music or voice acting ? The death of Cain out of nowhere like , its no big deal another fine example ?

Broken itemization ? Broken end game ? Bots day 1 ? No PVP when they promised it ? The most shitty RPG elements in a game ? The most ridiculously bad build diversity in any ARPG i ever played up to date ? Graphics being cute rather than gothic when game is all about HELL and SATAN himself ? Exploration non existant ? Maps linear ? Boss fights a childs play ? Multiplayer down to 4 from 8 players ? Synergy between classes/specs non existant ? I can continue for days ....

And all this while its development team was working on this game with over 100 people for 5 years with unlimited funds ( Blizzard , multibillionaire company) ...

I mean ... WHYYYY , WHYYYYYYYYY lol

Such a major let down. In fact after Warcraft 3 and expansions, Blizzard hasn't really produced anything that's my cup of tea.

Shhhh , dont tell that truth in here ... there are many sensitive blizzboys thinking Blizzard is as good as before and theyll do whatever it takes to make you beleive so ..

I agree with you 100% .. From TOP AAA caliber developer to end up being a typical Free 2 Play like company while many of their games ( HOTS for example ) being equal or even WORSE than other Free 2 Play games that coming from 10 man studios..

I dont want this kind of Blizzard personally , not my cup of tea either.

@jg4xchamp: I completely agree with cinematic walking.

Uncharted 2 was extremely bad for this. Entire chapters of thst game were linear, slowed down walking sections in which the NPCs either demonstrated everything you needed to do before you did it or told you exactly what to do.

I also lump the terrible climbing segments into the cinematic walking category. Ultra linear, ultra pointless sections that they prolong by making everything break under Drake's weight every time.

@AzatiS: It's just so weird that two of the biggest PC devs ever, Valve and Blizzard, are doing things I have absolutely zero interest in. VR.... pass, Team Fortress style shooter... pass, MOBAs... pass.

Still, a lot of mid tier developers are filling up the hole they left quite nicely. I can find my fair share of shooters and RTS and dungeon crawler RPGs :P

I doubt there will ever be a RTS modded as much as Warcraft III, or a game that's as classic as Diablo II. But hey I heard they are remaking Warcraft III in Starcraft II, that sounds nice !

I don't think Uncharted 2 is as bad as you think it is at it, and I certainly don't think it completely guides you that way in terms of bold (not sure if there is that much of a difference between crushing and the other difficulties). But yes the climbing itself has become grating to me on my most recent playthrough of UC2 and 4. But more so when it's used in 2, and how often it's used in 4. Most of the time in 2 it doesn't bother me, because I have no problem with it as a pacing mechanism. It's simplicity works for how they use it in combat, and I think the combat encounters can generally be fun. But Opening the game with that climbing or having this dumb walking shit in a village where you pet a cow, following some douche who walks at a fucking snails pace, and then and then and THEN!!! the very next thing is just a whole bunch of mindless climbing so Naughty Dog can go "look how pretty our game is"...and that shit is gonna stop looking pretty after awhile, is lame as shit.

Quantum Break, The Order, and Rockstar stuff drives me insane with all this walking bullshit.

But yeah fucking walking. Worst part about Bayonetta 2, seeing Platinum games have a walking segment.

QTE's for sure.

Playing Tomb Raider: Legend atm, it seem to be the first concentrated effort in the series to implement them, that would permeate all the way through to the reboots.

In Tomb Raider 2, when a life or death situation would occur i.e. traps... it would take control of the camera angle, but still leave the player fully in control. Although it amounted to going forward and pressing jump+grip, it still had at least a sense of required player input. if you wanted you could just stop dead in your tracks and die, for example.

Nothing fun at all about fake tension with minimum input. Playing these games side by side makes readily apparent the stark contrast.

In Tomb Raider 2 you'd shit yourself, in Tomb Raider: Legend it's "not this shit again".

I agree , even if im a huge fan of Counter Strike GO i have to agree.

Though to be fair to VALVE , they offering some different from the usual NEW IPs . For example PORTAL 2 was one of my top 5 games last generation hands down and CS GO my most played game ( still is ) hands down. Also im waiting Half Life 3 like very few FPS around while i wouldnt say no to a PORTAL 3.

I mean there are experiences from VALVE im really looking forward to ...

And when it comes to BLizzard ... the only game im interested ... is the next diablo game and thats it since they canceled TITAN. But thats me i guess.

@jg4xchamp: the thing that bothers me the most about it is that it isn't engaging in just about any sense, but you have to do it anyways. It cuts out exploration, it doesn't challenge the player, and it robs the player of the mechanics you had access to before. The game just forces you to go through the motions.

P.S. yeah the foreign village and the ice cave with Tenzen was the worst.

@AzatiS: I haven't played CSGO. I was never really much of CS player, though I have played a lot of 1.6 and CS: Source :P

But having said that, a lot of my multiplayer time was spent on Day of Defeat and Left 4 Dead.

Portal, Portal 2 as well as Half Life and its sequels are some of the best singleplayer games ever made;

But Valve seems content on riding their success of steam, steam market, crate economy, and other lucrative business ideas. I think we'll see Diablo 4 before HL3 at this point. At least Blizzard is still making games :D

Yeah i agree.

I hope Blizzard learned its lesson and provide a fantastic Diablo experience. Now they know that too much color and too much casuality wont work for every single of their games , get their shit together , hire the right people and do everything right based not only on what other games offering but what community asking for as well . I hope ..

@AzatiS: Diablo 3 had a rocky release but c'mon dude it turned into a great game. Still is a great game.

It's no Diablo 2, mind you, but it's a worthy successor.

@AzatiS: Diablo 3 had a rocky release but c'mon dude it turned into a great game. Still is a great game.

It's no Diablo 2, mind you, but it's a worthy successor.

Rocky release you mean almost the first 3 years till expansion release.

It turned in an ok game , i cant call an Online ARPG game great when it is all about farming/grinding/finding and it gets me bored after 1-2 days but ok , its up to individuals taste.

But worthy successor ? Naaah , not even close. If it was , aside everything else , they wouldnt kick Jay Wilson out of Director position in its almost first year , nor kick the entire headquarters of D3 development team like Mosqueira / Bowarsky.

Game failed in every possible way other than sales .. and thats because it was a game with DIABLO logo on it and Blizzard behind it.

2) no save anywhere feature

3) Story and graphics over gameplay

4) "realism" over fun

5) P2P Multiplayer games

6) Grinding

7) Pay 2 win

8) yearly crap releases

9) Ruining good franchises

10) Fanboys

I'd argue that what would feel jarring is allowing full agency during times where the game makers obviously value and place importance on things such as pacing, flow, and scripting. You can disagree with the philosophy of the overall game design, that I have no issue with, but within that framework it's a bit absurd to complain about something conducive to its overall goal and direction.

It'd be like complaining that you're allowed too much jumping in Mario.

I'm the opposite.... my little finger doesn't reach CTRL very well... C makes far more sense.. I thought CTRL was the outdated s*it way of doing it personally.

How about the very idea of micro transactions in games where they have no business being in there? Like, I really enjoyed Bravely Default, but the fact that they had micro transactions at all was incredibly off putting to me, and it made me question the designers.

That's your problem. Using your pinky to hit CTRL.

Try using the part of your hand that hovers over CTRL.
