Nintendo is once again reaping the benefits of being #1 with overall hardware sales. Why is this great for the industry? Because they arent pulling a "Sony".

Sony on one hand achieved superier sales with PS1 and PS2 but crippled the competition in the process. Wii however, is gaining most of its sales from casual gamers. Sure some are loyal Nintendo fans, but it is common knowledge that the Wii is pulling in more then just the hardcore gamer.

This is good for the industry because this leaves room for the competition to grow in the hardcore market. Props to Wii for giving the competition a chance to thrive in he hardcore market while making a killing in sales!

Sony pulled in casuals with the PS2 mainly because it was a cheap DVD player... Sony forgot that with the PS3 when they stuffed a Blu-ray player that few people care about at the moment.

The PS2 did a lot of good for the industry too, and you can't really blame Sony for wanting to crush their competition.

The PS2 still crippled the competition. WHile Wii is selling at PS2 levels. The 360 and PS3 will each hit at LEAST 35 million in their lifetime.

That is a huge improvement over past generations.

The PS2 did grew an industry.

The DVD industry.

Without it, the DVD industry would be nowhere as near as it is now.

The PS2 did do it's share of expansion.

Lets just say both consoles are doing their part.

All three main consoles (Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii) benefit the industry, not just one.

I'm not sure why you think the PS2 is not growing the industry. No one needs to be reminded that the PS2 sold over 125 million units making it the most successful console in recent times and it's stilll doing ok.

Some Wii games would not have come out if it wasn't for the PS2 i.e Okami, Bully...

This applied only for like 1 year, then afterwards stand alone DVD players were cheaper, yet the PS2 sold millions even afterwards. Oh, and MANY people did not care about DVD when it was first released, similar to what people think of Blu-ray today. "Oh, who needs DVDs when we have VHS cassette tapes". Sound familiar to what you hear about Blu-ray? Not many bought a PS2 pimarily for the DVD player, just as a nice bonus, similar to PS3s Blu-ray.

What brought them to the PS2 over the Dreamcast?

The DVD player! I know that's why I wanted one!

The developers came to the PS2 why?

The DVD medium! So what if the PS2 is weaker than the other consoles and the Xbox also has a DVD player. You want your game on the succesor on the most succesful console ever made, not the newcomer. The DVD medium allowed you to have hours worth of movies and music.

DVD movie sales also began taking off right after the PS2's launch.

That's what I am talking about.

I know. I WAS THERE!!!!

No matter what company you may stand behind, there is no denying that the PS2 was an amazing console. Stunning games in every genre, a ridiculous number of games, and introduced games that will be remembered forever (3D GTA, God of War, Guitar Hero, FFX etc...)

How was it bad in any way? Besides the original versions hardware failures, though.

That's funny, people used to claim the PSX and PS2 were full of casual gamers. Now all of a sudden they were mostly hardcore, and the two systems didn't do anything for the industry in terms of expanding it... riiight :|

I'm pretty sure the PS2 grew the industry. With games like SingStar, Buzz, and Guitar Hero (which debuted on PS2), the PS2 one up'ed the Wii last generation. Not only did it appeal to the casual gamer, but serviced the hardcore gamer as well. Plus, it was a cheap DVD player, something the Wii doesn't even do (for unknown reasons).

You do know that motion sensing could have been done on PS2, GC, or XBox easily, right? There's nothing "advanced" about the motion controls. You're basically holding a remote control and waving it in front of a receiver. I sometimes wonder why Sony doesn't just ship out a USB compatable infrared sensor bar like is on the Wii and just make a couple wireless Wiimote rip offs for the PS2.

Yeah you say could have been done BUT IT WASN'T, and hmm....look up gaming addons....and also its fairly late into the lifecycle of the PS2 i think that would be called a waste of money....but still i digress the whole point even if it could have been done last gen it wasn't it has been done this gen so its not 6 year old hardware

The PS2 is still outselling the 360 and PS3. Adding motion controls and advertising them heavily would probably allow the PS2 to leapfrog back into first place. However, Sony wants to push PS3, so they would never do that.

[QUOTE="ng1234"]PS2 was a terrible console in my books. I'm glad the current dominating leader in the market has moved on to newer things. Willy105

Why was it bad?

Well, for me, there wasn't any games worth going back and playing. All the games I have for my PS2, except a few sports titles, aren't really something I would replay pass 2 or 3 times. Then after that, the game collect dust. And even worser, the console durability can surely be question as I have been through 3 PS2's now. I seldomly even use my last PS2 because I'm afraid of it breaking like the other. At least I didn't break it, it broke on it's own. Disc read errors, loud scraping noises, constant game freezing up on load screens, and sometimes the disc doesn't want to spin drove me crazy. I think the PS2 is one of the worse console I ever played. I would say next to PS1, but I do have a atari which is worser. PS1 also crashed and burned on me. It's like Sony knew what they were doing. Over hype a console, het developers to make alot of games for it, and then make faulty PS products that will last you for about 4 months, With that as their ace, they can reap in the sells because they know consumers will go and rebuy their product with all the games they may own with their product....

This all depends on what you would define as 'growing the industry'. If flooding the markets with hardware is 'growing the industry,' then I would agree. I would however, say that money that is not spent on hardware is likely to be otherwise spent on games, so the Wii may actually have a negative impact on the industry. Software sales is what grows the game industry, and it's what the Wii is currently lacking.AmyMizuno

I agree completely. As of now, I think the Xbox 360 has th best software attachment rate, while PSP has the lowest.

The PS2 helped expand the industry as well. With the Wii as the frontrunner though, competition does seem more interesting. It's really good the PS3 isn't the frontrunner, it could of really made Sony look monopolistic in the console wars.

Unlike the PS2 the Wii's amount of good games is atrociously low. PS2 had at least one good game for every bad game. Wii has ten bad games for everyone one good Wii game.

Oh how I love when people post a topic they really can't back up. So many uninformed people that think they have a bright opinion when they really have no clue.

Every system that has come out has helped grow the industry. No other system has helped grow the industry like the Playstation brand has.

Once the Wii hits over 100 million it will have helped grow the industry more than Sony had. But as of now Sony has set the benchmark,

As far as brining casuals in Sony was able to do that as well, so brining casuals in isn't some new thing with the Wii.

The gaming audience grew during the PS2 era because it came out with a bunch of casual games and marketed them as hardcore. That's why there is so many delusional casuals out there. Regardless of the tactics, we do have more gamers than because of the PS2.

PS2 casuals are more dedicated gamers. While Wii demographics are more non-traditionaly gamers and have no intention of supporting the industry in the long run.

Nintendo has totally different target audience.

the only reason why sony crippled the competition was because the consoles were so similar. wii is different so obviously it can be a secondary system for most real gamers.

I'd have to disagree. PS2 introduced new gamers to the market, however, few of them were desirable as far as gamers are concerned. As far as sales, they'd buy anything some rapper mentioned in a song, so they were a gold mine.

PS2 took the casual gamer and brought them UP to the real gamer level. Got them playing God of War, Jak and Daxter,Ratchet and Clank and countless other games.

Wii takes the casual gamer and panders to them. It lowers itself to their moronic level. "Oh look an exercise game. Oh look sports with motion." Instead of tricking them into playing awesome games it sells them crap.

I feel about the wii the same way i feel about radio music. All flash, marketing, gimmicky, and good for people who aren't really into that media (like skilled guitar players dont often love nickleback).it just lacks a certain depth or soul, and gets old quick
