[QUOTE="gamefan274"]http://thepowerreview.com/blog/2009/05/23/unreal-engine-3-epics-fail/ Its a good read. It kinda explains how the PS3 multiplats are still lagging behind the 360s but its first parties (Killzone 2) look better. The Unreal Engine is responsible because it runs very poorly on the PS3.UnnDunnI get the guy's point, and I kinda sorta agree with it, but he ignores the fundamentals of the business: developers simply can't afford to build massive new engines for their games anymore, unless they have huge backing from a Sony or a Microsoft or an EA. If you're anything less than a triple-A hitmaking developer, you either license a game engine and customize that to your needs, or if you're lucky enough to already have a mature engine from previous generations, you build on that and port it to the other console. Right now, UnrealEngine3 is unquestionably the best licensable engine and tool-chain for this generation. It has its flaws, but no other engine even comes close for flexibility, ease of development, robust toolsets and multiplatform support. That's why everyone uses it and that's why it will continue to thrive. i can agree on that
Unreal engine 3 is gross!!! Hands-down the worst pop-in ever, (UT3 even on PC, Bioshock, Gears, Rainbow Six... horrid!) And after a while of playing, the game starts to stutter.
Best engine personally, Cryengine 2. ohh yeah
I don't really like UE3... so that none of my games was developed with UE3
UE3 is one of the reasons that pull me back when I'm buying new games
It may look appealing at first, but it doesn't deliver...
UE3 is the worst game engine this gen. Textures are nice, everything else is crap. Also the WORST texture pop in ever. That's what kills the engine right there. How could any designer of any game engine accept that horrendous texture pop in?
UE3 is amazing. Have you seen what they can do with it?
When that first came out the jump in polygons was pretty phenomenal if I remember correctly. Whereas the standard was something like 10,000 polys per screen, and UE3 was capable of displaying 2 million on screen.
I'm pretty certain UE3 can also scale with processing power, so the better your computer the better you can make stuff look with UE3. Some of their newest models are absolutely amazing compared to the models they made with it just a year or so ago. The lighting is amazing, the detail is amazing, and best part is that it doesn't require 4gb of ram, the best video card, and the best processor money can buy to actually play games that use the engine at max.
The ONLY game on the 360 that looks better than Unreal Engine games is RE5, which is also mutliplatform (though noticeabley better on the 360). Halo 3, the only other big game i can think of with a custom engine, looks horrible next to most UE3 games. On the PS3 its a different story, but its also not a fair one since UE3 runs so poorly on it.

The textures aren't an engine feature.
The thing about pop-in is that devs were too lazy to make it work properly. There's a command line in Gears' ini that removes the pop-in for high-end cards. Low-end cards would choke if you modify that line though, because the engine loads all the textures in the card's memory. It's an engine feature that isn't used by most devs, unfortunately.
I don't notice any pop-in in Mass Effect or Mirror's Edge on my 9800GT.
Wheelman is an open-world game using UE3. Looks pretty bad though.
theUE3 is easily the most overused and most overrated engine out there it was amazing when gears of war came out i mean god damn it that game put the ps3 to shame in graphics, but now its getting kinda stale especially after the likes of killzone 2, uncharted 2(1st 5minutes anyone) and heavy rain
UE3 is one of the most flexible engines around. Sure, it has weaknesses, like every other engine, but just look at the broad range of games using it.lhughey
most games use it because its cheap. yeah many games use it, and many games fail because of it.

You revived a 3 year old thread... to say this?IMO it runs poorly in general.[QUOTE="gamefan274"]http://thepowerreview.com/blog/2009/05/23/unreal-engine-3-epics-fail/ Its a good read.
