The latest Unreal Engine 4 update adds Project Morpheus support for PC and PS4

Posted by: Jason Moth June 5, 2014 in NEWS, PC, Playstation 4, Tech

Epic Games has released a brand new update for the Unreal Engine 4, which comes with a host of new features and improvements to the engine. While the previous update added PS4 and Xbox One console support, this new one comes with a little something for the PC platform.

Unreal Engine 4.2 update adds Project Morpheus VR support for both the PS4 and the PC. This is another addition to the list of VR headsets supported by the platform. In an earlier update, Oculus Rift compatibility was also introduced to the PC. We need to mention that this feature was mainly added to help with the development process. This means that an Oculus Rift or Project Morpheus supported PS4 title might not necessarily work on the PC even though it also supports the VR headsets. However, this should make the developers’ work much easier when creating cross-platform titles. Unreal Engine 4.2 adds a plethora of other features as well. The list is quite extensive, but we’ll try to list some of the highlight.

The additions of vehicles is one of the major features added by the update. Not only that, but Epic Games have also included a sample game, which developers can use to test them out. “This sample game features an off-road vehicle and a looping track within a desert setting. Race across sand dunes, rocky cliffs and ancient ruins, and try to beat your best time!” The company mentions that 4 WD, FWD, and RWD drive trains are supported from the get-go. The default drive train comes with four wheels, but it will work with any number of them, and there is also no limit to the gears that can be added.

Some other new features that come with Unreal Engine 4.2 update include the camera animation system and the user-defined structures for blueprints. The first is described as being very similar to the CameraAnims from Unreal Engine 3, except that it also features Blueprint support. “Conceptually, a CameraAnim is simply an animation that can be layered onto the in-game camera. You can animate the camera position and rotation, FOV, and post process settings.” The user-defined structures for Blueprints are a brand new asset within the engine. Structures can be created in the Content Browser and can be edited using the standalone editor.

No, but since I often wear glasses I don't like having something extra over my face.

I am actually really surprised this didn't illicit more of a response. With how those Oculus Rift and Facebook threads went nuts, I really thought some people would be glad to know there will be a commercially viable alternative. Oh well. Games go on :)

@CrownKingArthur:

I've been subscribed to it since public release, it feels very much complete, even though they keep adding to it. Like the first month it felt like you were subscribing to a full product and not beta testing a demo for later subscribers, so I would say it's pretty robust.

It's also stupidly well supported by epic in terms of community, tutorials, and of course these updates.

You just so happen to be in luck.

Works with glasses, has stereoscopic sound

Most importantly among Project Morpheus specs for some people is that it'll be compatible with glasses. You won't have to endure for a year-long wait for a solution like Google Glass users did.

Emphasizing that sound is just as important to VR immersion, Sony pointed to new 3D audio technology it has developed for Project Morpheus. Stereoscopic sounds occur in all directions and changes in real time depending on head orientation.

VR is the way forward.
Hopefully Sony will deliver it to the gamers... and Facebook Oculus Rift for the smartphone and tablet users...
