Yeah, I'll trust Nintendo with an online only device given their excellent history with DRM for digital games.

@techhog89: Luckily I never use Nintendo for online things. Nintendo store sucks too much even before info like this came out. My WiFi speed is pretty great as it is but if the router isn't strong enough, it'll take its sweet time.

Based on this, internet is required. There are no physical games. This all makes sense when you throw in the SCD patent and the discless system patent. SCDs might exist as an option for people who don't have good internet, though.

@Ant_17: Preach it Brutha!

Seriously though, can't we take a break from NX rumor threads for like 3 months?

Btw who thought up, I mean "found" this rumor?

4K would be sweet. I would love to watch Nintendo TV shows and movies in 4K. I could also watch Game of Thrones in 4K, something PS4 cant do right now.

@techhog89: If that's the way the rumor goes then it sounds very unconvincing. Nintendo has never been the type to ditch physical copies for digital. Especially knowing that most people won't have good enough WiFi. If this is true then I'll take my money elsewhere. Right now, I'm saving to get a gaming PC anyway.

Like all rumors lol. I can't think of an explanation for the second video, though, and that's why I think it might be true. Why would Nintendo need Amazon to host the MyNintendo site when they self-host everything else? And why is it a secret?

Well...thanks for the memories, Nintendo.

I wish you luck in the toy market and as a 3rd party developer.

The thing is, doing this could also mean that they could have a 20 TFLOPS console if they wanted.

Dude, that would be a worse idea than what Microsoft tried to attempt with the XB1 before the 180. Also, Gamestop isn't going to support a streaming only device as Gamestop makes most of its profit selling physical copies of games, not hardware.

So, with that said I'm calling this rumor bogus. Nintendo is crazy, but not that crazy.

If it's just a cheap streambox though, couldn't Nintendo just have a much higher retail markup than usual?

It's only a matter of time before Nintendo, Xbox and PlayStation are all pushing streaming devices.

The advantages to those companies are just too numerous to ignore. At the very start of the list is a monthly sub from everyone regardless of whether they want to play online or not, sales of a low production cost TV box that can take a couple of controllers and a complete iron grip monopoly over the games on it with no prospect of second hand sales and it's far too much for any of them to resist.

Nintendo being the fore runner would be no real surprise given their willingness to experiment but I expected MS to bite first.

@GarGx1: If Nintendo succeeded in getting it to work, i think Microsoft would go for it. I also wouldnt be surprised if they beat them to the punch.

It has to happen, ive been playing Metroid on Wii U and cloud saving would make that game a masterpiece. Right now, every time i want to access my save, i have to wake my drive. Massive power waste for such a simple task.

I also bought the game on 3DS and play it to practice on the go or when at work sometimes. If Nintendo made a way for me to access my save through the cloud on both devices, i would have saved money and time.

@iandizion713: Both Microsoft and Sony already have the infrastructure in place. Sony have Gaikai and MS have Azure, I really have no idea what Nintendo have in regard to back end servers but they do have, at least, the basis to build from. All it takes is a bit of investment in a few data centres around the world and they'll be good to go.

Edit: As much as I'm a massive fan of PC gaming, that's in no way immune to this either. the future of all gaming is in the cloud.

I highly doubt Nintendo of all people perfected game streaming, so its going to come with all the quirks and warts we've seen with past attempts and if your internet connection is dodgy well then........ (Just change 360 to Wii U.)

How would that fix the problems with a dodgy internet connection? You'd still be running into issues with lag/latency, and is that SCD going to come with the NX standard, or is that going to be a separate optional purchase? At the end of the day you're still limited by your internet connection and the fact it is a requirement to play every game will make this a tough sell just like the XB1 pre 180. Nothing has changed in the last three years.

It wouldn't come with the NX, but would be used as the NX hardware in place of the internet connection. ALso, the "no physical games" part was just my speculation based on what was said, so it could be wrong.

Wii U gamepad streaming isn't using your internet connection. You have a physical box that is steaming video using a combination of both hardware and software only about 10 - 20ft to the Gamepad. That is totally different than having a box that streams via your internet connection from a server hundreds of miles away.

@emgesp: It really depends on how they market it.

MS screwed up royally with Xbox One pre-launch by having a complete twat in control at the time, followed by trying to sell an always online console that really didn't need to be and then proceeded to tell prospective customers to pull out their felching straws and suck it up, when they compained.

Nintendo, if they have any sense and this is in anyway true, will market it as an always online streaming device not an off line console with an always on requirement.

It doesn't change the fact that the experience is inferior via streaming over using the source be that a physical or digital copy. When the media isn't interactive streaming is great and very convenient, but the same can't be said about gaming at least for the foreseeable future.

If you think the Wii U was a cluster fu** then you didn't see anything if this rumor turns out to be a true. Nobody wants a streaming only device for gaming. People want to know that they can still play their single player games without worrying about their internet connection.

Also, I think we can debunk this rumor by simply bringing up handhelds. Why would Nintendo make the home console a streaming only box, but continue to use physical media with their handhelds?

I'd get behind a digital only device way before I'd ever get behind a streaming only device. Hopefully Nintendo is more Apple with the NX than OnLive/PS Now.

Hmm, they do insist that the NX isn't a follow up to the WiiU. This might be more truthful than we think, which by the way would be bullshit.

Because we haven't heard conflicting rumours already.

Considering the number of different ideas surrounding the NX that have surfaced over the past couple months just goes to show how well Nintendo has kept tight-lipped about it. People are likely pulling shit out of their asses at this point to generate some click traffic.

I'll wait till Nintendo reveals it before jumping to a conclusion about it.

Well...thanks for the memories, Nintendo.

I wish you luck in the toy market and as a 3rd party developer.

The NX will surely be your last console, er...whatever the hell it is.

Appropriate for you:

Also...

As a toy maker? I agree.

As a third party? They can go **** themselves if they pull that shit!

@emgesp: No, but using an internet connection you can watch Netflix on the Gamepad lag free.

Because the Wii U to Gamepad streaming isn't using the internet connection and of course you wouldn't notice the lag because movies aren't interactive media. Again you can't compare streaming from the Wii U to Gamepad to streaming using your internet connection from a server many miles away.
