Upgrade my pc to a Gaming PC or PS3?

They almost cost the same. What would you chose and why?

It comes down to what games you want to play, I'd personally go with PC because it has it has alot more gaming options like rts and mmorpgs. But don't buy either one because someone told you to, buy one based on what your going to do with it.

If your going to build a new gaming PC... Make sure you get a I7 Intel, Tri channel RAM and at the least a GTX 280. Should only cost you $1,200-$1,300 all said and done.

But you will have a beast PC. Last you a long time.

Wish I would have waited. Stuck with a C2D and a GTX 280 :P Still can play anything out there max settings with the exception of the first Crysis.

Never buy PC parts that are good enough for now. Always buy for the future. A $400-500 system isn't future proof.

download cpu-z and gpu-z, that should help u figuring out ur specs.

I had the same choice last year. I went with upgrading my PC so now I am PC/360/Wii and I still am not regretting it. It all comes down to personal taste though.

The PS3 would be the better choice for me personally. I am a university student and have a limited budget and the PS3 happens to fit into it while a PC with the primary purpose of playing games maxed out doesn't. What's more, I already have a nice laptop so I cannot justify spending all that money on a gaming PC when all its other functions would already be covered by my laptop, thus meaning that I would have spent a very large sum on a device meant only for gaming.

In addition to that, I have a nice HDTV so playing BRDs would be a nice feature. I also wouldn't have to torture myself about which parts give me the most bang for my buck. The PS3 also has a number of games that I am interested in, perhaps even more so than a gaming PC. It certainly has Bioshock and Dead Space and I am beyond eager to play those games. Despite split screen dying on consoles, it still has a presence and I have friends I would love to have in the same room as me so I can play with them.

The PS3 just seems a lot more simplistic and accessible and those two adjectives have no negative connotation for me. If you have the time, the money and the confidence, then go ahead and get a gaming PC. I myself don't.

Not bad except for the nasty on board video.

You really only need a GPU upgrade. I wouldn't get anything to fancy for your system. Something $150-$200 would do you good.

Also wanna make sure you have a good PSU and a PCe 16x expansion slot.

If you have to buy an entire new motherboard, RAM, CPU and Graphics Card then do not bother. Buy a PS3. What ever you do though do not buy Windows Vista! It's a great way to gimp your PC.

Keep in mind that even if you're upgrading and have say 2 Gigs of RAM, if that RAM is an incompitable type with newer motherboards (That is if your using crappy DDR(1) RAM like me.), then you will need to buy entirely new memory modules. You will also need a new motherboard to house your new processor, and presumably you are going to want to buy a new graphics card. That adds up to alot of money. In order for me to get a system that is significantly more powerful than my PS3 I would have to spend about £40 on a new motherboard, £120 on a new processor and around the same for a new graphics card aswell as about 40 on RAM (Though dabs are selling DDR 2 800 MHZ Kingston value RAM for £20 right now which sounds like a good buy. Single module too.). I also (Me personally that is.) need a new hard drive, which if I'm lucky will cost me around £35. You may also want/need a new soundcard, not sure what these cost generally. This adds up to around £350 (PS3 is under £300 now.) for me using the same case and monitor. Also keep in mind that's me trying to be as cheap as reasonably possible. Not cheap, but then this stuff is alot cheaper in the states (But so is the PS3.).

Although your suggestions are good i think is better with a gtx260 which is about 30-40 more and cut a bit on the psu ( a good brand 550w corsair or OCZ are more than enough even for future unless is planning going to use Sli)adamosmaki

His processor isn't the best and will for sure be a bottle neck on higher GPU's. None the less if he wants the cheapest name brand GTX 260.

I really think he should spend a few extra $$ and get 100 watts more. That way when he wants to get a new PC he has power. It's only a $15 diff. Price per watt upgrade is enormous.

If you throw a GTX 280 onto the system you will look at around 1400-1500 depending ont he i7 processor y ou get (i picked up the 920, once again, budget reasons). I just put together the system you named minus the 280 (i got an EVGA GTX 260 for budget reasons) and with everything (minus the monitor) it was around 1250. YOu are looking at atleast 100 more for a 280 (and if you go that high you better be sure you have good air flow because these cards get very hot). I should also note that my price was with a lot of combo deals from New Egg. If you can't get those combo deals it'll be more as well. Needless to say, if you wan't a PS3/360 quality system, you will, like he said be spending atleast 1200 dollars, but not with a GTX 280 or a i7940 or 960. Personally, I am extremely happen with my system and New Egg is the best way to go if you want to build up. I guess it is entirely possible to spend between 1200 and 1300 if you go cheap on the mother board and ram and power supply but that wouldn't be very highly recommended. gamer620

It's not going to cost 1000, all he needs is a new graphics card and he can play games like Crysis just fine. Do you want me to break down the cost for you? Because I can assure you, you do not need a 1000 dollar graphics card (With a new power supply mabye.) to be able to play Crysis on high.

With that system, you can easily play Starcraft II, Diablo III, Crysis Warhead, etc with relative ease. There's no need to go to the latest i7, quad-SLI, DDR3 system for any of the upcoming PC games - the system upgrade I've outlined will cost you around $350 (less than a PS3 ) and leave you playing games with far better visuals than any console. If you want to spend some extra cash, go for a more powerful GPU, and perhaps upgrade your hard drive.

If he likes shooters mostly, maybe PC with Crysis would be a nicer choice, but i just did not see it in his list

Plus 360 has Gears, Halo, Lost Planet 2 too, which are cool shooters

BTw i havew a quad core (6600 something) too, and 2GB ram PC, but got it for work, so i use a 8400 until a proper PC only game comes that i will need to upgrade for, like a next gen RPG only on PC with Crysis like visuals, maybe in 2011 or 2012 we will see such a title i guess (and hope)

For now Witcher is going to consoles with a real next gen engine, and that makes me go towards consoles evenmore

upgrade to a better pc >>> ps3 imo.

I own every consoles and handheld this gen and pc gaming is still best by a long shot imo (although 360 has some awesome rpgs and ps3 has MGS3/Killzone2).

I seriously doubt The Witcher will be better on consoles. It might be diffrent, but for a start it won't be uncensored like the non-US and non-UK versions of the original (Which can be fixed.). That's already a fault in my book. The PC also has all the best WRPGs, while the 360s only semi-worth while WRPG exclusive is your much loved Fable 2, which might well even come to PC yet. Not to mention he will get a better performance out of upgrading his current PC and it will be cheaper. He will also have the ability to mod his games which will add to replay value. DLC will also likely be free, and he won't have to pay for Xbox Live either. I would say the PC is the better option here.

I don't doubt that you can build a system for that price range, but I do doubt the quality of the hardware you are getting.

if you dont want to get too techinical with your pc, or afraid of altering too much, you may want to look at the hd 4670. Though not nearly as powerful as the other cards listed it will run everything out today on pretty high settings and look much better than anything on consoles. Dont have to worry about psu or anything

I have been able to tweak one them to play farcry 2 at 1680 x 1050 on all very high at direct x 10 at 30 fps
