The reality is that right now today if you have a modern desktop with a standard ATX motherboard you can upgrade your PC right now and have a rig that is stronger than next gen consoles and will be able to handle whatever you through it. Basically if you computer isn't more than 5 years old you can probably do this. Everyone's situation is different so some people might just need to buy a GPU and that is it. Others might need to buy a new case and power supply. But either way for $200 to $300 depending on your situation, you can upgrade your rig to beyond that of next gen consoles.

If you have a big enough case and strong enough power supply (600 watts or better) then all you need is a new GPU. You could go cheap and get a 7950 for $200 or you could drop some extra cash and get a 7970 or 760 or 670. All miles ahead of the PS4 (and obviously xbone) while being cheaper. As much as $200 cheaper for some of these cards.

If you don't have a big enough case and strong enuogh PSU then you will have to buy a new case and a PSU. But even then you could STILL upgrade your PC to stronger than the PS4 (read this as next gen ready not haha the PS4 sucks and PC rulez) for less money than the actual PS4. I suggest getting like a 760 for around $250. You can get a solid case with enough fans and air flow for around $50 now a days and again an 80 plus bronze certified PSU (i.e. wont fry your motherboard and kill your computer) that is 600-700 watts start at like $60. So it's still cheaper than the PS4 to go this rout. You could also get a 7950 for around $200 if you want to save a little extra cash.

So as you see, because of the flexibility of the PC it is possible to enter into the world fo PC gaming for cheaper than next gen consoles. Keep in mind too that all these cards come with free games. Actual free games. As in games that you would otherwise have to pay for. Not games that are already free on other platforms. Legit big budget games like Far Cry 3, Tomb Raider, Watch Dogs, Hitman Absolution, DMC, which AMD lets you pick from, and from nVidia you can get Batman: Arkam Origins and $75 in game currency to go towards F2P games warframe, neverwinter, and marvel heroes. I've heard rumors about watch dogs being added to AMD's list as well but can't confirm that (boy would that shoot GPU sales through the roof). Games are always offered up for free with hardware purchases especially if you go AMD. THey are always adding games so in the future who knows what they will give you with their card.

So those of you interested in PC gaming and are worried about the cost don't worry because for many of you the cost will actually be lower than someone shelling out hundreds of bucks on the next gen of consoles this holidy season. Again not everyone will be able do this. Some of you have old ass desktops or desktops that are so proprietary that you would have to replace your mobo or possibly even CPU or both to get up to par. So for you guys a nextgen console would still be cheaper (although slightly and then when you factor in the free games it probably balances out even more) but for those who are eligible the upgrade rout is a very viable option. Especially if both these console's launch line up seem meh to you. You could just spend the $300 to get your PC up to par and enjoy games like watch dogs, titanfall, COD:Ghosts, BF4, and other nextgen games that are multiplat and coming to PC as well and wait a year or two till the real meat and patatoes of the next console generation starts getting served and then pick up the console of your choice.

Again this isn't a haha Master Race owns you thread. Just sharing information and letting people know what options they have.

My PC's Specs:

  • Asus P6T SE Motherboard
  • Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67 Ghz
  • 3 x 2GB OCZ DDR3 RAM
  • ATI Radeon HD 5870 Video Card
  • Samsung Spinpoint 500GB HDD
  • Western Digital 1TB HDD
  • LG BD Drive
  • LG DVD Drive

I'm going to upgrade my video card to a GTX 760 or an AMD Equivalent. What y'all think?

BluRayHiDef

What model of a GTX 760 were you thinking of getting? The models that are clocked above 1050mhz are faster then stock GTX 670's. Plus you can pick up 4gb models for around $300

Which one is the best one? The  4GB sounds good. Aside from the Titan, is the GTX 760 the fastest single GPU card?

You have the GTX 770 which is basically a overclocked GTX 680 and the GTX 780 which is a Titan LE

The amount of console extremists owning themselves in this thread is as staggering as it is hilarious.

-Average Pc gamer posts...

"You can upgrade your PC and get a better next gen performance for cheaper if..." *takes time to explain how*

-Typical Console idiot

"YOU CANT BUILD A PC FOR UNDERRRRRRR 400 DOLLERRRRRRPSSSS"

Try to contain your herp derp kids, I know it's hard but practice your words, practice reading them that is. lol.

PC encompasses a broad-spectrum of systems. They don't need a  standard  system, to run games, as there are games that appeal to all people.

That being said, TC is outlining a  possibility. Something, you apparently cannot grasp.

Yeah because each year PC grows faster than consoles right.? Again there is 2010 hardware that is stronger than the PS4 and only 10 million 3 year latter own something more powerful.?

Even the 600 PS3 didn't took 3 years to reach 10 millions, and the PS2 sold it on its 1st year.

Even the 600 PS3 didn't took 3 years to reach 10 millions, and the PS2 sold it on its 1st year.

was any of that supposed to make sense?

Which one is the best one? The  4GB sounds good. Aside from the Titan, is the GTX 760 the fastest single GPU card?

m3Boarder32

You have the GTX 770 which is basically a overclocked GTX 680 and the GTX 780 which is a Titan LE

All of which are too loud

Are you playing on mute ?

Yeah maybe that is why so many hermits are below PS4 levels.. Confirmed by Valve it self.

tormentos

going by Valve Statistics, about 10 million PC gamers already have an equivalent or better PC than next gen consoles.

10 million > 0

and by the time next-gen console user base reach 10 million, PC gamers with equivalent or better PC will be 20 million.

Because you think every Steam user does the survey and you think every PC gamers uses Steam.

Really though? I'm running an i5 with Integrated graphics. I'm PC illiterate...my buddies all have $1000 rigs that they say are "middle of the road" in terms of power. Why would "middle of the road" cost $1000? Are they doing it wrong? Or are we basically saying that a low end, entry level GPU upgrade for $300 or so is still more powerful than a PS4?

Again, I have no idea what I'm talking about. I'm throwing out numbers that are cheaper than a PS4. But are entry level GPUs more powerful than the PS4? Legitimately asking.

I am not saying PC gaming will grow 10 million a year, what i am saying is that the rest of pc games will upgrade so the number of pc's that are better than next-gen consoles will increase exponentially (I mean in 3 years GPU's that destroy ps4 will cost $50, so everyone even the poor pc gamers can have gaming pc's stronger than ps4).

A 670 won't be miles ahead of a PS4 in actual performance, it will probably be worse.

Get another 670, case closed.

For you to match the PS4 gpu all you need is a 900+mhz 7850. Heck my 2011 based GTX 560ti is only roughly 20% slower then the PS4 gpu. A 7850 at 1ghz can be found for $170. For a $300 card you can get a 4gb GTX 760 or a 3gb 7970ghz for $310. A 7970ghz operates at 4.3 TFLOPS while the PS4 gpu sits at 1.8 TFLOPS, your looking at more then 2x the performance. The same ratio as geforce 8800 series to the current gen consoles

Hermit disguise? Dude, I haven't turned my Xbox on in about a year..... Yes my PC costs more than the PS4 but it does more than the PS4 ever could. Call me when the PS4 can do uncompressed 1080p 60FPS recording.

Outside of purely specs/TFLOPS there is nothing yet that shows the 7850 will match the PS4 performance

I'm not a computer genious.. but let's all be honest.... upgrading isn't not as simple as changing your computer's memory, and when you wanna upgrade. you wanna upgrade as much as you can.... you don't wanna use new hardware with the older one... annd.. most people have company made PC's.. which a lot of their components are custom and not upgradable.
