If you're one of the many who imported the North American release of the From's modern classic Demon's Souls, you'll be happy to know that Atlus is guaranteeing that servers will stay switched on until at least March 2011.

The PS3 exclusive is essentially a single-player action-RPG, but it has many unusual online features and does allow players to invade each others' games to co-operate with - or attack - each other.

The servers also have a World Tendency that varies between black and white, making the game more or less difficult and unlocking secrets.

To celebrate its announcement, Atlus is setting the servers to Pure White for two weeks, which will make the game easier for newcomers and allow veterans to reach new areas and items.

And what happens then? That's the problem with game that run on dedicated servers, if they can't run in P2P they lose a big aspect when the servers shut down.

That's it? Its no wonder console game's lifespans are so short. :?

If this were a PC game, I don't doubt it would probably still have a community 5-10 years from now. One that not only is still playing it, but maintaining servers out of their own pockets and modding it to make it better.

Yeah, but you gotta consider this is a fairly niche game still, I mean its huge on here, got GOTY and everything, but it sold like 250-300k, at least half of which probably returned it when they found out what kind of game it was, I see every game store with like 20 copies or more. So I don't imagine a huge ton of people actively play it constantly, I still go on every few days, but still.

Without the servers and multiplayer content, the game will have no longevity. I am very interested in playing the game (understatement), but don't have the means to do so right now... so I am hoping the game remains somewhat intact when I get it 12-18 months down the road. But from this, I doubt that'll be the case.

It is why I find the reliance on "online" content in most games these days to be kind of despicable, especially if that content won't be available to people 5-10 years from now. I understand most people who play online just want the next, flashy experience, but when it comes to Demon's Souls, its a unique experience that relies on the online content to add not only to the atmosphere (an essential part of singleplayer games), but the challenge.

I guess I'll have to settle with playing King's Field IV for now... I should probably start playing it.

Ugh, I played that for like half an hour, I don't understand how games like that were ever considered fun. Like, not only does everything feel slow and clunky, but it takes like 10 hits to kill an enemy, but only takes them like 2 or 3 to kill you, so most of the time you just watch when they attack hit and back off, for like a minute per enemy who gives like no exp.

1.this is about US servers I.E the fact the article states to the many that imported the US version of the game.

2.If they are only keeping the US servers open 2 years...how long do you think they will keep the EU servers open for?

3.publisher really means nothing, official dedicated servers go down, I doubt namco wants to keep the servers in the EU up forever. and SCE either.

It doesn't affect me, I didn't like the whole aspect of being attacked by another played in-game, it'd be much better if they allowed you to accept or decline a request to join or an option to turn off the feature. Either way, the article said until"at least" March, 2011, and I'll be done by the game by 2011 anyway, hopefully.

Seriously? I have spent awhile weighing up whether I should shell out $500-600 AUS on a PS3 come December, & Demon's Souls, along with GoW III had almost pulled me over. I know I'd be on the PAL servers, but if they shut the American servers down so quickly, they'll surely shut down the PAL servers in the same amount of time, if not sooner.

Then again, by the time they shut down the PAL servers, I'd be through with DS, but it's a shame knowing that one of the main features of such an awesome game won't be usable in a few years time. Things like this is what separates the all time classics from the great games (even though there was no online console multiplayer around when a lot of the classics were released... But still).

To put your last statement better, things like this are going to hold back some of the games this gen from being true "cIassics".

Never before have a I plunked down 67 hours into a single player RPG before until I played Demon's Souls. Hell, I stopped playing Okami at thirty hours because I got bored. Truly, I love not having to talk to tons of towns people and the online features are just a thing of beauty. Love to watch the ghosts of other players running around. I begin to wonder, why are they headed in the other direction? Amazing experience one truly worthy of Game of the Year. I have a feeling the servers will be up longer than they say.

Hopefully Sony will actually publish and release Demon's Souls 2 worldwide if it ever happens. Other games they own still have servers that are running like Resistance. I knew the American version wouldn't have an extended online life because Atlus aren't a major company who would keep a game up online for years.

There are plenty of items to help against invasions. I've played 68 hours and I've only been invaded ONCE the whole time so it's no big deal.

Well, let's hope they continue supporting the servers :>. Shutting down the servers will take away the "soul" of the game sadly. Not only the innovative PvP and co-op interface, but the help system as well!

As for me, I can't take advantage of the guaranteed server support ATM because my cousin lost my copy . I think I'm gonna have to track down another .

Yeah, SCE Japan Studio also co-developed it, and Sony published it in Japan. I'm not sure if I want a sequel yet. Maybe it should be left alone to marinate and age gracefully :P. I mean, I wouldn't be upset if it were to be announced! Let's just hope Sony actually has more faith in the games appeal next time (if there is one).

No, P2P still need central unit that manage connections and social features that can go down, ofcorse they have lower cost so they life is longer. Also there games that wont work and some games that P2P, all depends on gameplay, for example MAG wuld not work on P2P, host would need high upload, game calculation for 256 players would take whole console processing power and massive migration process would issued if player left

[Demon's Souls] relies on the online content to add not only to the atmosphere (an essential part of singleplayer games), but the challenge.foxhound_fox

It doesn't "add to the challenge", it ruins the challenge by allowing you to slide past levels with the help of superior players. Nor does it really add to the atmosphere; the art and constant threat of death create that.

Without the servers and multiplayer content, the game will have no longevity.

foxhound_fox

Online is by no means a necessary part to this game. Demon's Souls is incredibly addicting, and only really opens up on repeated playthroughs. The game has an insane amount of longevity, with or without the superfluous multiplayer component.

[QUOTE="locopatho"]Ugh kinda weird. I hate dedicated servers, at P2P is more or less forever... Until MS kills the entire platform, of course :PShadowriverUB

Yeah I know it's not ideal either but say for 360 Xbox Live every game will work with it until the console itself collapses, which admittedly isn't a very nice lifespan either. But I remember back in the PS2 days I had this magazine I got semi regularly that would list the dedicated games that no longer had support, it kinda horrified me to see online games dying after a year or two, bye bye 60 quid...

Thats what happens when your online play is free, if it was on Xbox live the online play would never stop

Supabul

And yet...there aren't any games anyting like Demon's Souls on xbox360 to be found and there likely never will be because M$ dosen't support and develop games like this that are strictly meant for the enjoyment of gamers, M$ cares about the money aspect and that is all, so your hype on xbox live is pointless on a game like this (which sony help crate) but you can come back with your comments of this happens with agame like COD or MADDEN.

just so you know, sony co-develped the game with from software. This game might not have been made at all if it weren't for sony.

You know what's even better? Not segregating a games use between those who pay for online and those who don't. The best thing about Demon's Souls is that because online is free on PSN that means everyone who has the game is utilizing the online features. Heck, it automatically logs you in when you play the game. There's no need for any other screens for player v player or online use.

Everyone wants your money. That's the only reason these games get created. And if you wanna say someone like Bungie (yeah I know they are no longer MS) or Turn 10 don't give a crap about the quality of their games you are clearly wrong. BTW Microsoft published a different From Software game called Ninja Blade. Not as good as Demon's Souls unfortunately but trying to say MS doesn't do similar things is wrong.

Well we don't see MS taking risks on games like Demon's Souls or Heavy Rain. Ninja Blade isn't exactly what I'd call venturing into uncharted territory.
